The Throw-Aways

Summary

The notes trickled across the keys, as easy and melodious as flowing water in a stream. This was my element, my personal escape. This old instrument in the field away from the old road was my key to serenity. Out here, no one was around so I was free to sing away the pain as my fingers graced the old and chipped ivory.

"That was beautiful." A voice murmured behind me.

Raven Skarsson is a girl who only wants to make a difference in the world with her music. The problem? She's afraid of what others think of her. Ever since listening to the bands that have helped her through every rough patch in life, she's dreamed on being on stage-but Raven's never had the confidence to try.

The abandoned piano along the empty road is her only escape.

Austin Carlile has seen the worst of humanity-but also the best. He's gone on stage and heard stories from fans that has both broken his heart and empowered him to continue. His band is considered 'emo', 'goth', and 'a screaming satanic mess'. Despite this, the five members are the leaders of the throw-aways of society, those who are pushed aside.

When passing through a small town while looking for a possible new member to the band, he hears the rumors of a ghost along an old road that sings every night. Alan, the daredevil, challenges him to investigate.

These throw-aways might make something great together, but can Austin help the broken bird find her voice?

Characters

All Time Low

Ashton Skarsson

He is Raven's father. Ash is very protective over his only daughter, ever since his wife died. He is unaware of Raven's midnight habits, but supports her love of music.

Austin Carlile

Austin Carlile has been a major role model for many people, including Raven. They're currently looking for a possible keyboardist for their band. The band is associated with the "throw-aways" of society, or the people who are looked over and thrown away.

Blest the Abandoned Piano

Although Blest is not an actual person, Raven finds the old instrument in a forgotten church in a small meadow. She fixes up the old piano and regularly plays on the instrument, singing to the songs she learns. Locals hear her echoing melodies and call they mysterious singer, the "Singing Specter". Raven treats the instrument as another person, because they are both "throw-aways".

Dante Colts

Dante is one of the Throw-Aways at school. He's has a lot of energy that seems to be able to keep up to Kylar's.

Jake Da Pug

Jake is the blind, diabetic, fat pug that bumps around the house and provides companionship to Raven. They've had the pug for eight years and has too much flub to love! (This is based on my actual pug! Yes, the picture is him and he is the exact description of Raven's dog!)

Jay Brentson

Jay has been bullying Raven ever since Raven started high school. She claims she's a "fan" of the band OM&M.

Kylar West

Kylar is Raven's best friend and loves OM&M. She's an aspiring guitarist and would love to meet Alan. Kye knows about Raven's broken confidence and keeps encouraging her to stick with pursuing her passion of being a keyboardist.

Mark Drews

Mark is the manager of the band.

Nico Percardo

Nico is often seen as a brutal, brooding figure to many, but to his fellow Throw-Aways, he's one of the kindest, most optimistic people you would know.

Of Mice and Men

One of Raven's favorite bands. They are often considered a group of "throw-aways" since they aren't part of the popular culture and are associated with the looked over and cast out kids.

Raven Skarsson

Raven's been teased and bullied for most of her school life. She's a 18 year old senior at Golden High School. She's always loved music and wanted to play in a band, but after an incident a few years ago, she's lost all confidence in herself. Her best friend is Kylar West and is the only one to know Raven's hidden passion. She's considered a "throw-away".

Skars Derango

Skars (Real name Skarlet) is one of the Throw-Aways at Golden High School. She always loves to dye her hair different colors, but loves the shade of deep scarlet.
