The Throw-Aways

The Foxes Hunt the Hounds

Three weeks later….

It was November twenty first, but it was sunny outside. Beautiful California murmured in anticipation of the upcoming holidays. Austin and I were walking along the beach at sunset. Streaks of gold and orange painted strokes against the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean.

Austin’s long finger intertwined as our bare feet sank into the supple sand. Cool grains tickled my skin. The man pulled me along as I started to slow down. He led me to where the waves lap at the wet stretch of golden sand.

“So are you excited to get your new arm on Monday?” He asked me, a twinkle in his warm brown eyes. The cusp of the sun kissed the horizon as the sun started its disappearing act. Aus squeezed my hand to turn my attention away from the ocean.

“Of course. Doctor Lyons said it might have some bugs in it, but I can’t wait to finally have my left hand back.” I agreed happily. Warm ocean waves splashed around our ankles.

“You’ll be able to play Infernal.” I laughed at his kind words.

“Almost. I’ll have to work at it, but hopefully I can get back to where I can play regularly again.” I responded.

“You will, don’t worry.” He pulled me closer to him, kissing the top of my head. A sea breeze brushed my cheek. My mind wandered across the next few weeks. On Monday, I would go back out to Colorado and get the Project Motion prosthetic arm. Austin was originally planning to just join me and take his car out there and back. Now the entire band decided that they had nothing better to do, so they told us we had no choice but be stuck with them on the bus for another couple of days. After that, we had the week of Thanksgiving off to relax. We would start practicing the Monday after that, and our first show was going to be on December fourth. It seemed all too soon.

“What’cha thinking about?” Aus murmured. I let out a long sigh, feeling all the anxiety exhale.

“Oh, nothing much.” I responded. He arched an eyebrow as a silent sign of wanting me to spill more.

“I know you well, Raven. You’re always thinking about something.” He gently spoke. I nodded, accepting the fact.

“Well, I was just thinking about our next concert, on the fourth. Twenty days after that and I might get a permanent prosthetic.” I slyly diverted the conversation from my thoughts to the robotic arm. The singer took the bait and grinned.

“So are you going to name this arm?”

“Well, of course!”

“It wouldn’t be like you to not name it.” Austin smirked.

A jogger passed us, giving our private moment and odd look before continuing on her journey. A dog barked in the distance, reminding me of Jake. He was at home, probably sleeping on the couch. I think Ashby was home as well. He was arranging to meet Kylar at our next concert in Colorado. That would be on December thirtieth.

“Oh, have you heard about Jack?” Austin smiled.

“No, I haven’t gotten to talk to him in a while!” I smiled, thinking back to my friend in All Time Low.

“Well, I don’t know who exactly, but I heard he’s got a girl.” His brown eyes darted back out to the ocean. Pursing my lips, I pulled out my phone.

“He didn’t tell you who?”

“No, he’s been pretty quiet about it. I bet he’d tell you, though.” Aus chuckled and let go of my hand. My phone reflected the brilliant sky above us. Still grinning, I pulled up Jack’s number and sent a quick text.

Me: Hey! You didn’t tell me you got yourself a girlfriend! XD

Jack: Sorry! I’ve been keeping it a little quiet for now.

Me: Well you better tell me before I go out to Maryland and interrogate you.

Jack: Well………

I growled a little in frustration. Austin peered over my shoulder.

Me: Spill, Barakat!!!!!

As soon as the next text came in, I anxiously opened it up. My eyes scanned the entire message. At the sight of a single name, I nearly dropped my phone in the sand and screamed from terror.

Jack: Okay, okay! Her name is Jillian Brentson, and she’s from Colorado, like you. You’ll love her!!!!!
