The Throw-Aways

I'll Raise You, Like a Phoenix

I lay back in my bunk, opening and closing games on my phone. Nubby the nub was sore from today’s doctor’s appointment. I had gone back to Colorado to take some time and see Doctor Lyons. It was the start of the prosthetic process.

First they had to take some test of motion for the amputated area, then they poked and prodded the muscles. I was a little sore by then, but the fun part was coming up.

After all the poking and prodding, they had me start doing cast work. It basically was putting Nubby in some strange putty type thing and letting it harden up so that they could take measurements for creating the prosthetic. It hadn’t hurt so much as been a little sore afterwards.

The good news was that in twenty four days, I would be getting my new arm.

“Hey, Raven.” Austin knocked on the bunk side. I opened up the curtain a bit more and pushed Jake aside. He handed me some Tylenol and I swallowed the thick pills with a gulp of water.

“Thanks.” I murmured. His bright eyes shone with a smile. His hand grabbed mine, pulling me out.

“Hey, I was laying there!” I grumbled. As I got out of the bunk, Austin dragged me to the back lounge.

“The others are out and we’re going to play Skyrim!” He laughed, pulling me down beside him. Aus picked up a game controller and turned on the TV.

“Hey, what should we do?” He asked me, brown eyes trained on my blue ones. I crossed my legs under me and stared at the loading screen.

“Not be eaten by a frost troll?” I asked. He laughed a little and tapped a few buttons.

“How about….we steal as much stuff as we can?” He chuckled. I nodded and watched the little avatar on the screen appear. A brick road was leading us to the nearest city. Little pixel trees shivered in invisible wind.

An hour later, we had looted all the richest pockets in a small city up in the cold mountains. I had gotten tired of sitting and had curled up on the couch, legs tucked into my chest.

“Tired?” he asked me. Trading the remote for the controller, he shut off the system and flipped on some soft music. I think it was Ghost Town. The doctors had also given me some pain relief, but it made me sleepy. With a small yawn, I nodded.

“Come here.” He murmured. I propped myself up as he pulled me into his chest. I smiled a little. It reminded me of that one night after he found out about my arm. We stretched out, occupying ever available inch of leather. His long arms wrapped around my stomach. It seemed like right now was the only moment of alone time we had gotten in a while.

“Austin, I’m going to fall asleep.” I murmured. He smiled, rubbing my back, like it was his goal all along.

“Then you should sleep!” He laughed. My eyelashes fluttered, closing as my brain start to drift off.

“Do you want to watch Avengers when you get up? I know you love Loki.” He whispered to me in my ear, I shivered a little under his cool breath.

“Yes, I do love Loki, and Iron Man, and Thor, and Hawkeye….” I muttered. He laughed, pressing his forehead against mine. It seemed like it was the third time we were this close, the third time we shared the same space.

Was the third time really the charm?

“You’re a dork, Carlile.” I grinned weakly. He smiled.

“I know.” His response was faint, just like the dimming light outside. With that comment, he pushed forward, finally connecting our lips together. An entire electric zap went through my body. It sent my nerves on end and made my thoughts go numb. It was wonderful and exhilarating at the same time. My breath was sucked out of my body at the contact.

This time, Alan and the others weren’t here to disrupt us.

When we finally broke away, each sucking in a quiet breath, all I could do was set my head on his chest, nerves still shaking from the pleasurable five seconds. His arms wrapped tighter around me as I closed my eyes.

I don’t know if he said anything else to me because at that moment, I fell asleep.
