The Throw-Aways

This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race

Once again, I was in the studio. Austin had gladly brought Jake with us and was happily playing with him in the other room as I plugging in Infernal. The instrument popped to life and I heard the familiar hum of static in the speakers. Redemption, my new black arm, moved into position for a few scales. The fingers worked smoothly on the keys at a slow speed. Picking up my phone, I plugged in some headphones and started with Coldplay’s Paradise. It had some good keyboard parts to it and I was anxious to actually play a song.

From the other side of the window, Austin was sitting on the floor and petting Jake. The dog sneezed and I smiled. Somehow, things seemed to be getting better.

Now if only I could block out the whole Jay and Jack issue.

The beginning started up and I slowly bobbed my head to it. This song was memorized down to the last beat. The warm air swirled around me as I started to get into the groove. The special glove over the mechanical parts on Redemption gave me extra grip on the keys, but not to the point where it stuck to the plastic.

And everything fell into place.

Somehow, I smiled bigger than before. It was working. The arm was working! Of course, I would need a little more practice to get back into the habit, but the movements between keys were fluid and relaxed. I only slipped up on a few chord stretches where I couldn’t get my new hand into position quick enough.

Song after song on the playlist, I went through them all. Redemption lived up to its name and pounded the keys. My body slipped back into the concert mode when Astronaut by Simple Plan switched on. I let my hair swing around me like some black and silver party streamers.

Vzzz! Vzzz! My phone buzzed twice, annoyingly announcing that I had a text. As the song stopped, I took a swig of my water and checked who had attempted to make contact.

My heart dropped at the sight.

Jack: Hey, robot girl XD

With a sigh I glanced up to see Austin curiously watching me. I turned my back to him and sent a quick text. I had gotten better typing with my new hand.

Me: Hey! Only partial robot! XD

Jack: Whatever. Anyways, I got big news!

Me: What is it, Barakat?????

My heart dropped at the anticipation of the next text. I had a feeling about what it was, but I hoped it was different.

Did Jack and Alex finally get married, according to all Jalex shippers? Did Rian FINALLY get a girlfriend? Did Jack win a million dollars and decide to split it with me? Did he finally dump Jay?

As my phone vibrated in my hands, I swallowed the anticipation.

Jack: I’m bringing Jay to your concert in two weeks!!!! You’ll finally get to meet her!!! She says she excited to meet you for once :)

My heart leapt out of my throat and ran down the hallway. Oh no, Jay was excited to meet me…..

That could only mean trouble.

A knock at the door told me Austin was coming in. Jake wandered in first, bumping into Infernal before running into my leg. I clicked off my phone as Aus wrapped his arms around me.

“Hey, Raven. Who texted?” He asked, kissing my cheek affectionately. I blushed a little, but was still pretty pale from what I had just read.

“Oh, um, Jack. He said that he and his girlfriend were coming to our next concert, the one in Wyoming?” I asked him. My fellow bandmate grinned to me and looked happy.

Jake just growled.

I wish I could as well.

“So has he announced the name of his girlfriend yet?” He pondered curiously. I shook my head.

“No, not yet.” I lied easily. Aus’s face fell a little but he was otherwise looked pleased to hear the news. I fell into his embrace as he tightly hugged me.

“Aren’t you so excited to meet her?” He asked me. I nodded, not willing to speak.

“Yeah.” I managed to mumble out. Jack woofed uneasily and wobbled back out to the other room. Aus went and followed my dog.

Oh man. This was going to be tough.
