The Throw-Aways

Have You Ever Hid Your Face in Such Disgrace...

Austin’s POV

Tino, Alan, and I had booked it back to the bus. It was parked in an empty lot across the highway from the bar. What we had just seem was both eery, terrifying, and hauntingly beautiful.

Phil and Aaron were waiting for us as soon as we had gotten back. They looked on the verge of sleep, but had managed to stay up this late to hear our news.

“Oh man, that was just-“

“It was stunning and beautiful and-“

“The ghost was haunting, but played that old piano-“

“As easy as if she were breathing the notes herself.” I finished off the tumble of words. Phil held up his hands. The lights were only on in the back lounge, where we all sat down, slightly out of breath.

Alan peered through the shaggy locks of red hair excitedly. We awaited his explanation.

“So we heard her play this one piece which wasn’t bad, but as soon as she ended, we decided to check it out at the next song. As soon as she started it was OUR SONG!! IT You’re Not Alone!” Alan exclaimed happily.

“So Austin, Alan, and I snuck in after the first verse and stood in the back row. The main cathedral had broken glass scattered all over, so we had to be quiet and careful not to step on it. There was an old grand Steinway piano sitting at the front of the room. All the pews were either broken or looked ready to fall apart, so we just stood at the back. The ghost didn’t seem to notice us, but oh! Oh, the way she sang!” Tino sighed longingly at the memory. Alan seemed a little dazed as well. Even I had been awestruck at the talent the ghost possessed.

But there seemed to be a little something that wasn’t as supernatural as I thought. There was something a little more….mortal….to the immortal.

“Well, you came back in ten minutes. What happened to make you leave?” Aaron asked with a yawn. He relaxed on the sofa as I took my turn to explain.

“While she was singing the piece, I could tell she had her heart into it. We all seemed to be a little in shock at the stunning voice. But Tino was right-her hands were like they had been molded to fit that instrument. It even seemed to bend to her will! So after her song-“ I started off, starting to fade at the memory.

The ghost, the figure all in black, had leapt up. I had scared her away.

“Austin told her that the playing was beautiful and she went all freaky.” Tino shuddered. Phil raised an eyebrow suspiciously.

“So what did she look like?” He asked. Alan thought for a moment.

“She wore all black, from her hoodie to her jeans. She had gloves on and they looked a little old and worn. We never got a good look at her face, but her skin looked pale in the moonlight. I could’ve sworn I saw black hair.” Tino muttered with a shiver. It was true, what he said. The ghost looked a little more…contemporary.

“Well, what did she do to freak you cowards out?” Aaron chuckled. Alan stuck his tongue out.

“When she looked up, she seemed to rise onto the piano bench-almost floating on the instrument. Tino tried to talk her down, but then the piano lid just crashed and even the keys seemed to tremble. Oh, you should’ve been there. It was like the moonlight had made her glow with that terrible air around her. Even though we couldn’t see her face, it was like she wanted to rip our hearts out. As soon as the lid crashed, Tino and I made a break for it.” Alan’s teeth chattered at the memory. Although he believed in this “ghost”, he had always been a bit of a scared kitty.

“Oh come one, she wasn’t that bad!” I rolled my eyes. She was a taller figure and could’ve been about eighteen or so. Even with the added height of standing on the piano, she wasn’t so much threatening as brooding.

“Hey, you risked yourself just staying after we left!” Tino pointed out. Aaron muttered something about this nonsense and went to go sleep in his bunk. Phil followed him out shortly.

“So are you going out tomorrow?” Alan asked. The ginger shook his head nervously.

“I’ll be content listening from outside of the bus, not in the church!” He shuddered at the last thoughts.

“Look, guys, I don’t think she’s who everyone believes her to be.” I whispered quietly. The two ghost hunters just stared me down with eyes ablaze.

“Did you have your eyes closed that entire time?!” Tino whispered in exclamation. Once again, I had to roll my eyes at their foolishness.

“Look, I stayed for a moment after you two fools fled. I saw her eyes, just for barely a moment. After the doors slammed behind you two, she turned to leave as well. I saw her blue eyes, and they looked so sad and terrified.” I trailed off, swallowed by the thoughts of the two eyes in the distance, but an ocean of terror drowning her from the inside.

“Aus, you sound like a love sick puppy.” Alan groaned and shook out the ginger flame of hair. Tino just raised an eyebrow in curiosity.

“So?” He asked.

“I don’t think she’s an actual ghost.” I shrugged at the possibility. If she was a supernatural being, it was a very mortal girl with very mortal beauty.

“She must’ve screwed with your brain.” Aaron stood up and grumbled before going to bed. Tino left me sitting at the sofa alone, following his ghost busting friend. Tomorrow, she would reappear-if we hadn't scared her off. I hoped she would come back.

I could only think about that girl with the blue eyes and the pretty voice.
