The Throw-Aways

Why Do I Deny the Heart That's Grown Colder, Too Quick To Criticize the Lullabye

Jake the pug snored peacefully next to my side as I read the tweets. There were still floods of well wishes from loyal fans and I smiled as I read each one. But along with the nice announcements, there were declarations of curiousness as to my injuries. What had been injuries? Would I still play? What would happen now?

I to, was curious as to if I would still play. Austin told me that he would talk to Mark Drews as to this. Alan had notified him of the injuries via a conference call as soon as I had unwillingingly come out about my arm. Our manager agreed to keep it under wraps for now. This meant that I really wasn’t allowed to tweet a lot and I had to be low key.

So today was my first tweet, with permission from Mark, of course! I took out my phone and turned on the overhanging light. Jake snored, his tongue sticking out a little. Snapping a quick picture, I attached it to one of my new posts.

@LittleBlackBird: Newest member to @OMandM, Jake da Pug! He’s my bug with flub to love <3

With the file attached, I posted it. As I set my phone on the crumpled sheet, I knew that there would be a flood of responses and questions. Jake snored on, letting out a little sigh. I stroked the soft fur on his head absent mindedly.

We had to go to the studios in the next week, and after a few days of performing, we had a few small shows. It was nothing big like a tour, just a hometown show after getting to practice for a little. It was a little last minute thing that Mark had book the day before the accident.

Austin and I really needed to talk about my ability to play for that.

With a long sigh of frustration and impatience, I picked up my phone again. I checked twitter and the stats for the newest post. Of course, it already had hundreds of retweets, a thousand favorites, and a many, many comments.

@StylesofBeyond: Awww! What an adorable puggy!!!

@HeySoulSista: Why is he so fat?

@Kellinquinn: Jake is cute. Can I take him? Copeland wants one.
@Katelynnequinn: RT: I want one to. We’re getting a pug.

@IAMKYLAR: So much flub to love!

@gerardway: It’s a little Gee!!! I want to dye his hair red. Lemme do it!

So as I scrawled through all the comments, I had to laugh at them. I was a little surprised and awed that Gerard Way had commented, but I shook my head. No, Jake is not getting his hair dyed red.

He’s getting it dyed blue!

Okay, all jokes aside, I chuckled a little and turned off my phone for good. Jake snuggled up against my left shoulder, starting to snore lightly. We were on the road through Oregon and were about to stop on the coast line early tomorrow. Restlessly rolling around, I kicked my bag. Something metallic clinked.

Jake perked up a little, his ears twitching. I leaned over pulled open my bag. Inside was my laptops, chargers, wallet….and silver hair dye.

My boredom was officially gone!

“Austin!” I called. A head poked down over the edge, looking at me curiously.

“What happened?” his voice asked, like he was worried I had somehow was strangling myself. I pulled out the other two cans of silver hair dye. It was my birthday present from Skars, my hair dying expert and best friend.

“Do you know how to dye hair?” I asked. He raised an eyebrow before his head disappeared. A moment later, he was sitting on the edge of my bed, taking one of the cans from my hand.

“No, but we can figure out how!” He radiated happiness. Together, we read the instructions and gathered all the necessary supplies for our little endeavor. Huddling in the back lounge, we closed the door as I sat on the black couch. A stuffed Squidgy sat in the corner and I hugged the smiling squid to my chest as Austin brushed out my hair. I had given him carful instructions on the silver streaks I wanted.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” He told me. I sighed and smirked a little. I could trust Aus and his gentle ways.

“I know, I trust you.” I softly replied. He ran his fingers through my hair a couple of times before starting the process.

An hour later, we had cleaned everything up and I was letting the dye finish drying. Austin and I were relaxing in the back lounge. My numb arm crossed over my chest as Austin rubbed my back. I had complained enough that my back hurt so he offered to rub out the soreness. I didn’t pass up on his offer.

“Feeling better?” He asked as I sleepily blinked. Nodding, I put my chin on the stuffed squid I was holding. The dye should’ve set and been good by now.

“Hey, can you take a picture of how it turned out?” I asked. Austin nodded. Holding still, the faint beep popped through the air as his phone clicked and the picture was taken.

“It looks awesome!” He gasped and I did a double take. Austin had done a really good job. It was amazing and I was surprised why nobody asked him to dye their hair more often!

“Wow.” My eyebrows arched as I just looked at the picture. The silver had turned out nicely. Austin pulled his device back into his hands and focused intently on the screen.

“I’m tweeting this.” He muttered as I stared at him. I nodded and crossed my legs under me. A thump was at the door.

“Jake!” Alan’s voice called. A small woof followed. I guess my pug was trying to find me and had run into the door. The ginger had taken the dog’s attention off of us and I smiled at it. Alan loved Jake to death.

“Austin, when are we going to make the announcement?” I asked him. His deep brown eyes looked to me, knowing what I was talking about. For extra measure, I wiggled Nubby the nub. His eyes went blank from deep thought.

“Well, we have to make it soon.” He sighed. I nodded and thought about trying to play with one arm until my prosthetic came it. It would be a little less than two months before it came in and I would have to get fitted.

We still had that performance in San Jose before then. I couldn’t go on stage and just shock everyone!

Or could I…?

“Austin, I think I have an idea.” I told him excitedly. As I explained my plan, his brow furrowed. A thousand different thought passed over his face before he finally settled on one.

“Hmm….I think that might work.”
