The Throw-Aways

You're Addictive Poison that's Dragging Me Down

Jack: HEEEEEY!

Me: Yo, what’s up?

Jack: Just wanted to see how you and Austin were doing….<3

Me: Um, good?

Jack: I saw the pics of your new silver streaks on twitter….BADASS!!!!

Me: Haha, thanks! Austin did them! I love it, and I think Alan is putting silver in Jake’s fur right now….

Jack: Oh my….Don’t worry, Jake will love it. So has Aus kissed you yet????

Me: OH MY GEE, JACK. YOU CAN’T JUST ASK PEOPLE IF THEY’VE BEEN KISSED.

Jack: Hey! I just wanted to see if he’s gotten anywhere with you yet! XD

“Who are you texting?” Austin’s voice murmured behind me. I clicked the power button, shutting the screen off. I flipped it into my pocket and sighed, trying to play it cool. Meanwhile, my insides were doing flip flops.

“Just Jack. He’s been annoying, per usual.” I rolled my eyes. Austin laughed and sat down on the front lounge couch beside me. A cool breeze gusted through a window that was cracked open. The boys had stopped in a small town in Oregon. I had forgotten the name, and all I knew was that Tino and Aaron wanted to check out a cool bar. Austin, with his heart problems, declined the drinking part. I was too young, so this gave me an excuse to stay here.

Alan was busy sitting on the floor and dying my dog’s hair silver with one of the left over cans of hair dye. I didn’t think it would work, but sure enough, it did. Jake tolerated it, since he had little choice with his blindness.

The clock sang out ten at night. The hum faded away as I closed my eyes. My phone buzzed again, announcing another text. Sliding the Samsung Galaxy out of my pocket, I opened up the new message.

Jack: HE LOOOOOVES YOU!

With another quiet huff, my right hand set the phone on my crossed legs and started to type out a message. Texting had gotten significantly harder with only one arm.

Me: No, he doesn’t! Jack Barakat, I don’t know where you get these ideas in your head.

Jack: It’s obvs that he likes you! WAIT. Do you like him?????????????

After the seventh question mark, I just shut off my phone. Austin was giving me weird side glances. It was for the best that I ignored Jack. Hopefully, he would stop pestering me.

Alan looked up from his handy work, staring in amazement. As I stared closer at Jake, I noticed that he had silver band logo on his left leg, like it was some tattoo. Overall, Alan hadn’t done a bad job with the silver.

“Alan, what did you do to my dog?” I sighed. Jake turned, his tongue lolling at the side of his mouth.

“Hey, it looks good!” Alan defended. With a sigh, I just shook my head, grinning.

Austin’s phone started buzzing, the screen lighting up in the dim lights. The TV was whistling in the background as a football game was on. I could fall asleep watching it.

“Who’s that?” I asked. Austin snapped his phone shut and threw it on the table.

“Oh, just Alex.” With that comment, we both quietly turned to watch the quarterback score a touchdown. Our minds were each in a separate place.
