The Throw-Aways

The Crooked Young

Five weeks later….

Oh man, today was my birthday and I got to go back to Gold Ridge! How excited was I? Well, I was through the roof! Throughout the entire bus ride back to Colorado, I could barely sit still. The boys had treated me for my nineteenth birthday to a large stuffed Squidgy, a new IPod, some Vans, and Rise Records bought me….

My very own keyboard of my dreams.

It was a shiny new Roland/Yamaha complete with the cords to hook up to my laptops. I nearly fainted when I pulled it out of the box. We spent all day at the studios setting it up and when I played on it, I flipped out. It was a beautiful instrument and I couldn’t wait to take it on my next tour. It was like Rise had plucked the keyboard out of my daydreams, wrapped it up in a box, and slapped a bow on it.

Like all instruments I ever “owned”, I named this keyboard. I called it Infernal. It was the opposite of Blest, and it sounded badass.

The bus jolted me out of the daydreams as we came to a stop. Peering behind the shades, I saw that we were parked in the back lot of The Three Meatballs. The cool September winds picked up spare trash and tossed them across the crosswalk. Earlier this morning, I had texted Kylar to go to the restaurant at noon. It was 11: 52 right now.

“Can we see Kylar now?” Alan bounced up and down. As soon as the brakes activated, he shot out of the door. I sprinted to keep up. The rest of the band leisurely followed as we went around to the front.

“ALAN!” Kylar cried out, leaping into his arms. I followed and gave hugs to the rest of the group.

“Dante, Skars, Nico!” I cried out.

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” They all yelled. My dad came out and swept me into his arms. I was so happy to see him! A dog barked and out came Jake. He ran into a wall and sneezed again. I covered my open mouth in excitement. Jake yipped and bumped into my legs. The fat dog backed up and stared at me with blind eyes.

“Hello, bug!” I rubbed his head. It had been forever since I got to see my dog. I missed the pug terribly! Tino came in the door and Jake bolted for him. I could’ve sworn that the dog played favorites between the other band members! Then again, Tino loved to slip the already obese pug fries under the table. The warm sunlight seemed to make the room brighter. Once Kylar let go of Alan, she came to my side and handed me a bag.

“You shouldn’t have.” I teased my best friend. Her hands held out the blue striped bag, patiently waiting for me to take it. We all sat down at the bar as I opened it.

Inside was two tickets to a showing of Lucy in the town near us. Kylar knew that I loved movies but could never go. Inside was a little note. With a small gesture, she nodded for me to read it.

Of course, it was for my dad and I to go. It was so that we could spend time as a family together. This small gift nearly brought tears to my eyes. Kye wanted me to spend time on my birthday with my dad, just to enjoy being as a family once again.

“I arranged it all with your dad. You’ll be leaving in twenty minutes to go and catch the movie. There’s also twenty bucks to go and buy popcorn and drinks.” She pointed. I threw my arms around her. This was amazing.

“Thank you so much, Kk.” I whispered to her. She laughed.

“You know I’m the best.” I smiled and put the tickets back in the bag. Jack yipped as Tino stroked his little tawny head. My dad came out, leaning against the counter.

For the next twenty minutes, we all talked and Dante, Skars, and Nico gave me presents. I told them a million times not to do that, but they never listened. My dad presented me with a bunch of new books for me to read.

“For when you get bored on the bus.” He winked at me. I would be sure to read them as soon as I could. Dante gave me a new leash and collar for Jake, Nico gifted me with a pair of headphones, and Skars gave me silver hair dye. Winking, she knew that I had always wanted to try and put silver streaks in my hair.

“It’s when you get adventurous. But I better see silver on stage soon.” She laughed. I nodded, knowing that I would have to put it in before our next concert in Denver, which was supposed to be planned for mid-December or so. I tucked the few cans back in the bag and gave her a hug.

“Of course!” I smiled. My dad said he would put all the gifts but the tickets back at the house. I took the paper and the twenty dollars and threw it in my wallet with my phone. Dad and I started walking towards the door.

“Have fun at the movies!” Kylar called out after me. I smiled and waved. Dad turned the sign from ‘open’ to ‘closed’ as we left the building. I turned around and waved to Austin. He grinned and smiled.

Waving, I went and popped in my dad’s truck. Slamming the door, I felt a burst of happiness through me. It was always great to spend time with my dad and just get to be with him. We hadn’t had a lot of relaxing down time since Mom’s death. It was all work and no play. Now, it was time to watch Lucy with one of our favorite actors.

Today couldn’t get any better!
