Feels Like Forever

Chapter 9

Alan's POV

"Mum. Dad. I-I-" I couldn't find the words to say.
Fortunately they didn't look angry or upset. Unfortunately, the looked disappointed. If there's anything worse than making your parents angry, it's making them disappointed. I didn't know what to do, so I just stood there, staring at them, while Austin shifted uncomfortably beside me.
"I think I had better go." Austin whispered.
"No, you're going to stay right there." My dad spoke.
Austin nodded and stared down at the floor.
"Mum, please-" I whispered.
"No." My dad interrupted. "Don't say anything until I call Austin's parents."
* * *
"Please, take a seat." My mum smiled at Austin's parents.
I sat down beside my parents and Austin sat beside his, all of us around the kitchen table.
"Well." My dad began. "We explained most of it on the phone but I thought it would be best if we came to a conclusion together."
"I agree." Mr Carlile nodded. "Austin, is there anything you'd like to say?"
Austin was silent for a moment before he cleared his throat. "What is there to say?" He said, his throat dry and his voice raspy.
"What about you Alan?" Mr Carlile continued, all eyes turning on me.
I shrugged and attempted to avoid their gazes.
"Well, I think it's best if we stopped our sons from seeing each other." My dad said.
"No!" I shouted, standing up and slamming my fists on the table.
Everyone around the table stared at me in shock, except Austin, who continued to stare down at his hands.
"Sit down please, honey." My mum whispered, she looked sad and uncomfortable.
"You can't stop me from seeing Austin." I said, calming myself down and taking my seat.
"It's for the best." My dad replied.
"The best for who? You?" I laughed. "You have no say over what I do in my life so who are you to say that this is for the best."
"I'm afraid I agree with your father, Alan. I don't want you and Austin being around each other if this is going to happen." Mr Carlile interjected.
"If what's going to happen?" Austin suddenly chimed in, sounding as equally pissed off as I was. "There's nothing wrong with me and Alan dating."
"So, you are dating then?" His dad continued.
"Yes, we are."
An awkward silence fell on the room and no one dared look at each other.
"It's clear that the boys have made up their minds." Mrs Carlile mumbled. "Lets just leave them to it."
"I will not sit back and let Austin date a boy!" Mr Carlile shouted.
"Don't you dare say that!" His wife cried. "This is our son you're talking about."
Mr Carlile sighed and stood up abruptly, leaving the house and slamming the door on his way out. My dad followed suit, running his hand through his hair and stomping his feet on the way.
Both of our mothers sighed and placed their hands on their laps.
"Look, Alan." Mine began. "It's going to take some time for your father to accept this but, I'm going to make sure he doesn't stop you from seeing Austin."
"That's the last thing we want to do." Austin's mum smiled.
Me and Austin looked at each other and let out a sigh of relief, both of us had huge smiles on our faces. I turned back to my mum to see her smiling at us too and I suddenly felt a huge weight lift off of my shoulders. I could deal with my dad not accepting me as long as I had support from my mum. Austin's mum smiled at her son and he smiled back at her and I knew that everything from here on was going to be OK. Me and Austin didn't need to keep our relationship a secret from them anymore.
"We better get going Austin. It's getting late." His mother spoke.
He nodded before standing up. I stood up too and quickly wrapped my arms around him. He tightened his hold on me and we stood silently in an embrace for a few moments before he kissed my temple and whispered goodbye. They left the house and I watched as Austin's mum put her arm around him and smiled.
"You could have came and told me you know, Alan." My mum said, putting her arm around me, just like Austin's mum had done to him.
"I couldn't find the way to tell you mum." I admitted.
She squeezed my shoulder softly. "You don't ever need to be afraid of telling me anything. You're my son and I love you and nothing you tell me will ever change that."
I turned around and hugged her tightly, inhaling the scent of her fruity perfume.
"And Austin is a nice boy. I know you'll be safe with him." She whispered to me before kissing my forehead.
