Leaving the cave, going into the unknown

After breakfast Austin wished us good luck than went home so we drove to the doctors office in silence. I could tell that even though Alan was putting up a brave face he was also terrified. Who wouldn’t be? Were both in our early 20s and with him constantly touring he wouldn’t be able to be around as much as I’m sure he imagined he would. He took my hand while he drove with the other, it felt like 20min but when I looked at the clock it had really only been 5. He came around and opened the door for me and put his arm around me. We walked up to the office and he told the receptionist we were here before starting to fill out some forms. He knew I wasn’t good with talking to strangers so he usually did the talking, another thing he did I was forever thankful for. He handed me the part of the form that asked medical questions. I filled it out as fast as possible not wanting to look at them anymore and handed it back to him. We sat down and all around me I saw diagrams for pregnancy and other diseases, there were also a lot of other pregnant women sitting in the office. I forgot that I was going to get bigger, I wasn’t tiny in any sense but the thought of gaining a lot of weight scared me slightly. As the thoughts raced I didn’t even hear my name being called by a small women in a lab coat. We headed back into the room where I was handed a cup to pee in and a smock to put on. I went to the bathroom first and peed in the tiny cup which was the strangest experience of my life and extremely difficult. Then I went back in the room and changed before sitting up on the table allotted for procedures.

Soon a doctor walked in, a woman who looked to be my mom’s age and was about Alan’s hight, she intimidated me quite a bit.

“Hello Alex my name is Dr. Ross and I’m going to be taking care of you through this pregnancy. So first order of business is that you are in fact pregnant, about 2 months along. Were just going to do an exam to see that things are going ok alright?” I just nodded and let her probe around while Alan held my hand, I wasn’t sure who was more uncomfortable him or me. His face was pretty white and although he was trying to seem really tough and strong I could tell he was freaking out. She finished and wrote some things down and asked me to pull up my top, I did so and she put some cold jell on my stomach and a wand.

“Were looking for heartbeat mostly, ah there it is hear it?” I did hear it, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard and upon looking at Alan I could tell he felt the same way. We looked at the screen to see a tiny bean surrounded by what looked like a bag. That was our baby, though tiny it was all ours and inside of me. She printed off the scan, told me my next appointment and gave me a list of vitamins to take. I was in a daze while we walked into the car; I opened the door and got in. When Alan got in the car he went to put the keys in the ignition but I stopped him before he could.

“That was our baby. We made it, it’s going to call us mommy and daddy and look to us to help it grow.” I said while looking at him, he laughed slightly.

“It was beautiful wasn’t it? All ours, I’m excited Alex.” He said while taking my face in his hands, I just smiled at him.

“I love you Alan, were going to be ok, I know it.” I kissed him and the weight of the world flew off my shoulders.




About a week later we were chomping at the bit to tell the guys, we weren’t going to tell everyone until the second trimester, as that’s when it’s really safe to tell. The guys needed to know; it would affect their schedules because Alan would need to be there for the birth and a little bit after so tours had be scheduled around it. We decided to through a BBQ in our backyard; I say ‘our’ because I was officially all moved in to Alan’s house. This would be the home that we would raise our child in and make memories, even thinking about that gave me excited butterflies.

I was making salads and Alan was getting the barbeque ready for the burgers and hot dogs. The first to arrive was Austin and Val who both already knew, Austin because he was there that day and Val because Austin couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Next was Aaron and his girlfriend followed by Tino and Phil with their girlfriends. After the boys grilled up the burgers and hot dogs we were all sitting in the backyard talking and laughing. I could tell that although everyone was having a great time they were all wondering why they were here, it was a random BBQ. After eating everyone started to get up to go inside but Alan stopped them.

“Hey can you guys stay outside for a second? Alex and I have to tell you something.” Alan announced to the group.

“I knew something was going on, Alan wouldn’t just offer food if there wasn’t a reason behind it.” Tino exclaimed which caused everyone to laugh and Alan to give him a dirty look.

“So Alex and I invited you here to tell you that, she’s pregnant!” He exclaimed and everyone got up and hugged us both everyone was pretty excited.

“When are you due?” Val asked.

“February, but you guys can’t tell anyone yet cause I’m still in my first trimester, soon though. You guys just needed to know so no tours would be booked in the time frame of the birth.” I said, it didn’t seem to bother them and even though we all knew that this was going to slightly change the way and how long they toured for everyone was really excited for us.
