Backseat Serenade

A Deal

“Where were you?” My sister asked when I finally found her and the guys. They were sitting around with the guys from We Came as Romans, talking and joking around.

“I was getting a drink.” I answered holding up a new drink that I had gotten after leaving Austin.

“For an hour?” She didn’t believe me.

“It was a long line.” I responded taking a drink.

A couple of seconds later my phone started to go off, signaling that I had a text. I looked at it and saw a number that wasn’t known by my phone and a message.

Hey this is Austin. How bout dinner tomorrow?

“Who’s texting you?” My sister asked trying to look at my phone.I think she was trying to say something to me before I had gotten the text but I wasn’t entirely sure.

“No one.” I turned my back so she couldn’t see my screen.

I texted back: Shouldn’t you be paying attention to your interview?

“Are you going to keep ignoring me?” My sister asked irritated.

I didn’t even turn around to answer her. “Yes. I’m busy at the moment.”

Austin: Yes. And they’re setting up.

“Who’s Austin?” My sister asked. She was on her tippy toes, looking over my shoulder.

“No one.” I answered.

“Then why is he asking you to go out with him tomorrow?” She gave me a smirk.

“Because he’s a loser.” I answered and put my phone in my pocket without even answering the text from Austin.

“You’re not going to answer him?”

Why the hell was she so interested in this whole thing? “Not with you around, staring over my shoulder.” I responded. “I can message him later.”

“I think you should say yes. You need some fun.” She smiled. “You’re always looking after me and so serious. You never get to have fun of your own.”

“I have fun.” I defended myself.

“Watching Netflix with the band on the weekend isn’t fun.You need a guy in your life, you’re not getting any younger.” She responded.

“Thanks, MOM.” Our mom was always pointing out the fact that I should be starting a family now or at least be married. She hated that I was traveling with the band doing shows.

“Just saying you should say yes.” She said and then walked away from me.

***
I looked at my phone and then set it down again. It was two in the morning and I still hadn’t answered the message. I didn’t know whether I should say yes or not.

My sister told me to say yes. I should just say yes. But then again when have I listened to anything my little sister said. She was like four years younger than me.

I sighed and picked my phone up again. Fine I’ll go to dinner with you tomorrow. I finally texted.

Austin: Took you long enough.Meet you at your hotel room at 5.

***
“You said yes!” My sister said excitedly as she and Jackson sat on the bed in the hotel room. I was getting ready for dinner and they were creepily watching me.

“I knew I should have said no.” I mumbled.

“Who is this Austin guy anyways?” Jackson asked getting all protective over me. “Did you meet him yesterday or something?”

“Yes, I met him yesterday.” I replied not giving them the whole story or the whole truth.

“Well, we get to meet him.Right?” Sierra asked.

“I don’t give a damn if you meet him.” I said exasperatedly. “Quit hassling me.”

“She’s testy.” Jackson replied.

“She’s sexually frustrated. There’s a difference, a small difference, but a difference none the less.”

I sighed and rolled my eyes.

There was a knock on the door, causing both Sierra and Jackson to look at it. “He’s here!” Sierra ran to the door and opened it up.

Standing in the door way was Austin and Sierra looked star struck.

“Hello.” Austin said with a smile and then Sierra slammed the door in his face.

“Austin-fucking-Carlile! The Austin that you’re going on a date with is Austin Carlile! And you didn’t tell me!” I wasn’t sure if she was impressed with the fact that I scored a date with Austin Carlile or if she was pissed at me for not telling her that it was him.

“Yes and you slammed the door in his face.” I pointed out as I walked over to her. “It’s not nice.”

“It’s not nice of you to leave out the fact that you’re going on a date with Sexy-as-all-Hell-Rock-God Austin Carlile!” Sierra said looking a bit pissed. “You met him and you neglected to tell me!”

“He can hear you, you know?” I replied.

“I am not happy with you.” She glared at me.

“I can deal with that.” I smirked.

I opened the door to reveal an uncomfortable looking Austin. “Should I come back?I’m a bit early.”

I shook my head, “No it’s fine. I’m ready to go.”

“So where are we going?” I asked as I closed the door to the hotel room.

“I was thinking an Italian place.” Austin answered putting his hands in his pockets as we started walking down the hall. “And I was also thinking that maybe if you enjoyed dinner with me you’d like to go putt-putting after.”

“Maybe. I’m not sure about the putt-putting thing. The only reason I’m going to dinner with you is because my sister told me I should.I honestly just wanted her off my back about the whole no dating anyone thing.”

“Your sister seemed pretty pissed that I was the one at your door.” He commented, keeping in step with me even though he could easily be ahead of me with his freakish long legs.

“Only because I never told her the whole story. She kind of worships your band. She was pissed because I failed to mention that the Austin that I was texting was actually you.” I explained.

“Are you afraid that by going out with me you’ll cause a fight with her? Because I don’t quite understand why you don’t actually want to go out on a date with me. I thought we were hitting it off yesterday.” He looked a bit confused.

“No I’m not afraid of that it’ll cause a fight with her. I just don’t date. Relationships are messy and time consuming. I don’t have the time not the patience for one because I’m too busy trying to make my band a success and trying to keep my sister out of trouble.” I was being straight with him so that it would save time with him later when he actually expected a relationship.

“Aren’t you sick of being alone?” He asked taking me off guard a bit. I would have expected him to turn and run away like all the other guys did when I told them they had no prospect with me.

I shrugged my shoulders, “I guess but I’d rather be alone than miserable in a mess of a relationship. I’ve seen too many horrible relationships to be dumb enough to want one of my own.”

We were in the parking lot and Austin led me to a black SUV. He opened my door for me and then shut it after I got in.

“I’ve had my fair share of fucked up relationships. I’m not looking for another.” He said as he started driving. “I’m sick of being alone also.So how about we make a deal?”

“A deal?” I asked a bit amused. He was still willing to deal with me even after all the stuff I said to him. “What’s the deal?”

“We go out with each other and if it starts getting too messy and fucked up we’ll split. No harm, no foul. I won’t talk shit about you to anybody, you won’t talk shit about me to anybody. Careers won’t be ruined and neither will feelings.”

I thought about it for a few seconds. No harm, no foul? I nodded and held out my hand. “Deal.”
