Backseat Serenade

Pre-Rock star

“So who were you before you were a rock star?” Austin asked after the waitress had taken our order.

“I was a waitress at this family restaurant.” I responded, as I nervously played with my glass. “I hated every minute of it and felt like it was sucking the life out of me. I hated the way the people were so rude and talked down to me even though I was probably smarter than them. Who were you before you were a rock star?” I asked with a smirk.

“I’ve always been a rock star.” He smiled. “I wanted to be a baseball player when I was younger but that didn’t exactly work out as you can see. So I got into music.I thought you would know about my life. Where I’m going, where I’ve been. You know with your sister being obsessed with my band and all.”

I shrugged, “I don’t pay much attention to her fangirling I just know who you are, what you look like and what band you’re in. I don’t think I even know any of your songs.”

“I’m not sure that’s fair because I know your songs.” Austin responded taking me by surprise. How the hell did he know my songs? We were basically a nobody band with only a small fan following.

“How do you know our songs?” I asked, confused.

“I saw one of your shows when you were touring with We Came as Romans. I thought you guys were really good so I downloaded your songs. I told Lyman he would be stupid he would be stupid not to sign you. Warped tour needs some good, respectable girl acts on tour. You guys are good and don’t run around the stage in skimpy outfits like some of the other girl acts.” Austin explained enthusiastically.

I looked at my glass for a few seconds letting what he said sink in. “I guess I owe you a big thanks then.”

He smirked, “I guess you do.”

I shrugged my shoulders and smiled. “Maybe later.”

***
“You better watch out I’m the master of mini golf.” Austin said as we walked to the first hole after picking up our putters, golf balls and scorecard.

“Mm-hmm.” I said doubtfully. Dinner had gone really well so I had decided to take him up on his mini golf offer. I enjoyed hanging out with him.

“You don’t believe me?” He looked a bit offended.

“Oh, I believe you.I’m just going to be the one who keeps the score.” I took the scorecard from him.

“Have you ever played this before?” Austin asked.

I shook my head, “Nope, never before.”

“Would you like me to show you how to play?” Austin smiled like he had some big plan and I’m pretty sure I knew what he had in mind.

“Are you going to do that corny arms around me thing so you can cop a feel?” I asked.

“Pfft-yeah.” Austin responded. “I’m all for corny, romantic gestures.”

“Well I don’t think I’m the type of girl who falls for them.”

“I bet I can make you fall for me.” Austin smirked.

“I doubt that.” I responded.

Austin stopped because we were at the first hole. “How about we make an agreement?” He asked as he put his ball on the tee.

“We’re going a lot of agreements tonight.” I noted as I leaned against my golf club. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep them straight.”

Austin hit the ball and overshot it into the next holes course.

“Awesome!” I commented sarcastically. “You did that with absolute poise. Maybe I should take notes.”

“I can do without your sarcasm, thank you very much.” Austin responded.

I sighed and retrieved his golf ball. “So what’s the agreement?” I out the golf ball to him.

“I bet I can make you love me by the end of Warped Tour.” He smiled and took the ball from me.

“I doubt that’ll happen.” I answered stubbornly. Sierra always commented on how I had a heart of stone and that I was going to die alone.

“What do you have to lose?” He asked trying to convince me.

So not only did he want to go out with me but he was convinced that I would actually fall in love with him. He’s delusional. “Same rules apply? The whole no talking shit and what not?”

He nodded, “Yep.”

I would love to prove him wrong. “Fine, I’m in. I doubt you’ll be able to make me fall in love with you.”

Austin grinned, “I’m confident in my skills.”

***
“Where the hell were you!?!” My sister yelled as soon as I entered the door to our hotel room. It was only 10:00 pm, not like I stayed out all night. I didn’t understand why she was making such a big deal out of it.

“Umm…with Austin. We were debating running away to Vegas and getting eloped but just turned back. We have a big day tomorrow with it being the kick off day of Warped and all.” I replied, messing with her.

“What?” She looked panicked. “You’re pulling my leg, right?”

“Of course I am. We went out to eat and then mini golfing. Which I dominated at BTW. We didn’t even have a good night kiss.”

“You’re supposed to let the guy win.” My sister said exasperatedly. “Haven’t I taught you anything?!No wonder he didn’t kiss you good night.”

“He was horrible.” I replied.

“You still should have let him win!”

“He hit the ball and scored on another hole.” I informed her. “A chimp could have beaten him.”

“That’s not a very nice thing to say but I guess you winning was unavoidable.” She smiled at me. “So did he ask you out on another date?” She sounded excited and hopeful.

I really didn’t feel like telling her about the agreements that Austin and I made because she would want to go on and on about them.

“No not yet.” I shrugged.

“Maybe he’s intimidated by you.” She looked deep in thought. “What did he say to you?”

“I’m not in the mood to analyze my whole date. I just want a nice shower and to go to bed.” I grabbed her IPod and my speakers.

“Hey that’s mine!” She yelled after me.

“I have some catching up to do on some music.” I had every intention of listening to some Of Mice & Men.

***

“Riley! You in here?” Somebody shouted as they climbed up into our bus.

That somebody was Austin. He was a pretty impressive sight in a cut off tee, a pair of black skinny jeans and a pair of combat boots. I scolded myself for thinking that. I couldn’t possibly fall for him. He’s just a stupid rock star that wouldn’t think twice of me after we were out of the same vicinity of each other.

“Yep.” I mumbled looking back down at my book. I was alone on the bus reading because I didn’t feel much like socializing.

“Your sister and the rest of your band are out there mingling, why aren’t you?” He asked sitting down next to me.

“What are you reading?” He asked curiously.

I lifted the book off of my lap so that he could see it.

“Fifty Shades Darker?” He said questioningly. “Is that, that porn book or whatever?”

“It’s an erotic romance novel.” I responded, trying to make it seem less dirty. It didn’t really work. “It has a good story line to it.” I added.

Austin looked at me skeptically. “I don’t know how I feel about knowing you’ve read those. I think I feel kind of intimidated.”

I rolled my eyes and closed the book. “What time is your set today?” I asked wanting the conversation off of my reading material.

“The last time slot on main stage, 8:20 pm.You?” After listening to their songs, I decided that I rather enjoyed a few of them and wanted to see them perform them live.

“7 pm on the Warhead stage.” I answered.

“Awesome, you’ll be able to watch the set.Bring Me The Horizon is on at 7:40 so you should be able to catch them.” I hadn’t told Austin about wanting to see them. How did he know?

“How did you know I wanted to see them?” I gave him a confused look.

“I watched your interview and you’re wearing one of their shirts.” He pointed out.“It’s kind of a blow to the ego to see the girl you’re going out with wear another band’s shirt.” He smirked, showing that he was joking.

“Well we’ve only gone on one date so I don’t consider that actually going out. And if wearing another band’s tee hurts your ego than you’re screwed and I don’t exactly mean in the physical sense.” I commented.

“Come with me to the kick off BBQ tonight and that can count as our second date.” Austin responded.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged my shoulders. “I was thinking of asking Oli from BMTH to go with me. You know with me wearing his band’s shirt and all. It only makes sense.”

“You’re being sarcastic, right?” Austin asked looking a bit confused.

“Yes I am. And yes I’ll go with you.”

A smile spread across his face. “Good. Alan wanted to ask your sister to go with him but I’m not sure if he’s actually going to go through with it.”

“Alan?” I had no clue in hell who he was.

“The guitarist in my band.Alan Ashby.” Austin explained as if any of that meant anything to me.

“I don’t know who plays what in your band.” I responded exasperatedly.

“The ginger.” Austin added.

That actually meant something to me. “Oh, the ginger princess.”

Austin chuckled, “Yes the ginger princess.”

“I might approve of that.” I replied.

“Would you like to walk around with me and socialize with the other bands? You don’t want them to believe that you’re a prude bitch.”

I shrugged and smirked. “Maybe I like being considered a bitch.”

“Just come with me.” He got up from the couch and held out his hand for me to take.

I sighed and rolled my eyes jokingly. “Fine I will.”
