It's Complicated

I hummed “Breathless” as I took a drag of my cigarette on Shay’s back patio. I had my ass in a chair and my bare feet up on the banister. Beside me on a patio table was a pack of cigarettes, some limes, a salt shaker and a bottle of Jose Cuervo (my favorite). Shayley always kept a bottle hidden at his house for me.I flicked the ashes from my cigarette onto the patio even though I knew it would piss Shayley off.

“That’s a bad habit.” Someone said from behind me.

I turned my head to see Austin.

“Not the worst thing I’ve done.” I mumbled snuffing out my cigarette on the table, then I threw it over the banister. Something else Shay wouldn’t be too happy with. “I only smoke when I drink.” I said so that he could hear it.

He sat down on the steps not too far from where I was sitting. I took a shot of tequila straight from the bottle and lit up another cigarette. I looked up at the sky.You couldn’t really see any stars because of all the lights but you could see the moon.

“What are you doing out here?” Austin finally asked. I could feel his eyes on me.

“I wanted to get away from the guys.” I answered looking at him.

“It seems like Danny and the guys from Asking Alexandria know you really well.” He noted.

I shrugged my shoulders. “They’re good friends of mine.” I answered. I thought for a second and then got up and sat down next to Austin. “So Danny warned you about me. Why are you still willing to talk with me?”

“I choose to form my own opinion of people.” He answered easily, like he didn’t even need to think about it.

“Maybe I’m not a person you should get to know.” I replied. He seemed like a nice guy, I didn’t want to get his hopes up. I wasn’t exactly a good person and I didn’t try to be.

“I’ll decide that for myself.” He had a smile on his face. He leaned toward me and kissed me. The kiss tasted slightly of Jack and Coke. He was a bit drunk obviously. He pulled away, looking at me to be sure that him kissing me was an okay thing.

Without saying anything I started kissing him. My tongue intertwining with his. Without breaking the kiss I straddled his lap and pushed him down so that he was laying down. My fingers played with the hem of his shirt as he pushed the material of my dress off of my shoulders, exposing my bra covered chest. He sat back up and his lips trailed down to my neck. He nipped at my collar bone, earning a noise of surprise from me.

“Alexandria!” Shayley yelled from behind us. I didn’t hear the door open but apparently he had spotted us.

I looked in his direction and saw that there were several people looking out the glass door, watching mine and Austin’s little show. I adjusted my dress and stood up. I was more annoyed than embarrassed. Why the hell was Shayley yelling at me? He wasn’t my parent and I was a grown up.

“Shayley!” I yelled back, walking up to him.

“What the hell are you doing?” He asked clearly pissed off at me.

“What do you think? Playing patty cake.” I answered sarcastically.

“Can you not act like a whore with my friend? That’s the reason I invited yours.” Oh, he played the “whore” card.

“Can you not be a cock block?” I replied with fake pleasantry. “The last time I checked I’m old enough to do what I want.”

“I don’t need my little sister fucking my friend.”

“You’re his sister?” Austin asked from behind. “You told me you were his friend.”

“Oh, she’s an excellent liar.” Shayley said crossing his arms.

“It’s something I take pride in.” I chimed in smirking at Shayley, I brushed past Shayley.

“Where they hell are you going?” Shayley asked.

“Home. Where the fuck else would I go?” I answered.

“You’ve been drinking.” Shayley answered. “You’re not driving.”

“And what do you suggest I do? Walk home?” I asked.

“I’ll take her home.” A red head said coming out of the house. “I haven’t been drinking because I was going to be Austin’s DD.”

“You don’t have to Alan, she can call a cab.” Shayley answered.

“I would love for you to take me home.” I said looking at the hot red head, whose name seemed to be Alan.

“So Shayley’s pissed at you and Austin is pissed at you. How the hell did you pull that one off in a short period of time?” Alan asked as he drove me home. “You must be quite the talent. Was it a love triangle…”

“Ew no.” I interrupted before he could finish that thought. I wasn’t going to talk to him because he was clearly one of Shay’s friends but I didn’t want him to keep rambling. “Didn’t you watch like everyone else?”

“Nope, I was telling this chick about the cat tattoo I had planned when my Austin senses started tingling. He was obviously pissed off so I came to investigate. And there you were the damsel not in distress. So what’s the 411?” Alan answered not only kind of making sense.

“And you’re apparently sober?” I replied.

“Totally.” He assured me. “So tell me why Shayley kicked you out of the party.”

“Because he’s my brother and I was straddling Austin.” I replied leaning my head against the window.

“Oh the making out with the brother’s friend fiasco. So why the hell was Austin pissed at you? I’m sure he was enjoying it.”

“Oh he was. He was pissed at me because I told him that I was just one of Shay’s friends.” I had no clue why I was admitting all of this to Alan. I didn’t know him and I wasn’t at all obligated to tell him my life’s story.

“That makes sense. Austin’s wife cheated on him and was a lying bitch.” Alan replied.

“Austin’s married and he was making out with me? Fuckin liar.” I was pissed off that he was married and he was all over me.

“They’re getting divorced.” Alan chimed in. “So technically they are no longer together.”

“Oh.” I replied. “So why did you off to take me home even though Shayley told you no? Aren’t you his friend?”

“I’m more Austin’s friend than Shayley’s friend.” Alan answered.

“Well Austin’s pissed at me too.”

“Austin’s just been in a bad mood lately.” Alan explained. “So it’s not entirely your fault that he is angry.”

“Are you a natural ginger? Because you seem too nice to be one.” I asked jokingly.

“I’m a natural ginger. And to set the record straight, the rumors are true that gingers don’t have souls but I’m the exception. What about you?” He asked indicating my red hair. “Are you a natural ginger or is that a dye job?”

I shook my head, “I’m a brunette like my brother. I dye my hair like this.”

Alan smirked, “Damn, I was just going to pull the ‘us gingers need to stick together because we’re a dying breed’ card.”

I laughed at the absurdness of that. “Has that actually worked before?”

He shook his head, “No, because the only ginger girls I run into don’t seem to have souls.”

He pulled into my car drive way. After he put the car in park he got out of his side and opened my door. I found it extremely charming. None of the guys I usually went for did that for me.

I wanted to invite him in but I wasn’t sure I should.

“Would you like to come in for a drink or anything?” I finally asked determining that it would be the polite thing to ask.

“I have to get back to the party because I already told Austin that I would be his designated driver.” He answered putting his hands in his pocket.

“Oh.” I said dishearteningly as I pulled my keys out of my jacket pocket.

“I’d love to get drinks or dinner with you tomorrow though.” He replied.

“I’d love to get dinner with you.” I answered smiling. Dear God I bet I looked like a fool smiling the way I was. But it had seemed like forever since I had a date, and Alan seemed like an awesome guy. I definitely wanted to get to know him better.
