It's Complicated

Something Like a Classic Movie

“So you’re also in Of Mice & Men, right?” I asked Alan wanting to know if my assumption was right. We were at dinner at a nice sushi place and boy did Alan look hot dressed up.

“I’m one of the guitarist.” He answered. “Shayley told me that you were a model.”

“You talked to my brother about me?” I said surprised and then took a sip of my wine.

Alan nodded, “I thought he was going to take my head off when I told him that I was going to dinner with you. He gave me the whole speech that if I hurt you he would hurt me. I thought people only said that stuff in movies.”

I laughed. Of course Shayley would say something like that. “He might be a pain in my ass half the time but he’s my brother and he will always be there for me.” I looked down fiddling with my napkin. I got nervous when I talked about emotional, sincere things. I much preferred lies because then people didn’t get to know the true me.

I looked up to see Alan staring at me with a dorky smile on his face. “What?” I asked confused.

“You’re beautiful.” He answered and then looked down, blushing, like he didn’t mean to say what he was actually thinking.

I was taken by surprise. I hadn’t been told that I was beautiful from a guy ever. Sure I got hot and sexy but they seemed like such superficial terms. I smiled, “Thank you.” I said finally gaining my bearings back. “I would say something like that to you too but I don’t quite know the male equivalent.”

Alan smirked, “There’s handsome.”

I chuckled, “That doesn’t seem like the same caliber as beautiful in my opinion. It sounds like something you would tell to a ten year old in a suit to make him feel less awkward.”

“Well I am awkward.” He answered.

“And you’d probably look really good in a suit.” I answered with a smirk.

The waitress came back with food, putting a brief halt in our conversation.

“What is it with women and men in suits? It’s like porn or something.”

I shrugged my shoulders and laughed. “I don’t know. It’s probably some survival instinct for us because a suit signifies money. Money signifies that he can provide.”

“I was going to say that.” Alan said coolly.

“Riigghhtt.” I answered sarcastically.

***

“So do you want to go to my house and watch a movie or something?” Alan asked fiddling with his I Pod as he drove.

“Sure, what movie did you have in mind?” I responded.

“Um…I didn’t think that far.” He answered finally settling on a song. My brother’s voice came through the speakers.

“Is this from your guy’s new album?” I asked not recognizing the song. I know that they finished recording a new album.

“Yeah, this is My Understandings.Your brother did a really good job.” He responded. “I wish I could sing half as well as him.”

We were silent for a moment, letting the song play out. Alan was the first one to talk.

“So Austin said that you didn’t really know who we were. What type of music do you listen to?”

“I’ve listened to some of your guy’s stuff, just not enough to really know any. But I’m usually listening to Asking Alexandria, Memphis May Fire, We Came as Romans or Black Veil Brides. Asking Alexandria more often than the others since I’m really good friends with the guys. They come to my photo shoots and I go to their shows.” I answered.

“People can go to your photo shoots?” Alan looked intrigued by that news.

I nodded, “Yeah. Some photographers don’t like it but my friend Andrea doesn’t mind. I’m doing a photo shoot with her tomorrow. Would you like to go?”

“Yeah!” He answered excitedly.

“Fuck, Austin’s here.” Alan said as he pulled into a parking spot near an apartment complex.

“What did he want to have a rehash of the date or something?” I asked.

Alan shook his head, “He comes over sometimes when he’s pissed at his almost ex, just to get away from her because she doesn’t know where I live. I have an extra room so he crashes there.”

“Oh…” I nodded. “I don’t promise this often but I’ll be civil and well behaved. I’ll even listen if he wants to rant about his almost ex.” I maybe said the last bit with a little sarcasm.

“We’re guys we don’t rant about stuff like that.” Alan answered. “We drink beer and talk about hot girls.”

“I can totally do that also.” I didn’t want the fact that Austin was there to ruin our date. Maybe I could even get on his good side and Shayley wouldn’t be as pissed at me anymore. “And I’m a model so I know a lot of hot girls.”

Alan laughed, “Are you sure?”

I nodded, “Oh hell yeah.”

“Hey, how’d the date go?” Austin said from his spot in a chair. He was looking at a note pad and seemed to be scribbling things down.

“Awesome.” I answered slipping my shoes off at the door. I was now shorter than Alan instead of the same height.

Austin looked in our direction and looked surprised. “I didn’t think you would bring her back.”

“We came back to drink beers and chat about hot girls.” I said before Alan could say anything. “Well you guys will be drinking beers. I can’t because I have a lingerie photo shoot tomorrow.”

“It’s a lingerie photo shoot?” Alan said looking enthused.

“Yep.” I answered.

“Score!”

“What the hell are you guys talking about?” Austin asked looking from me to Alan.

“She has a photo shoot tomorrow and she invited me to it.” Alan answered Austin’s question.

“You can come too if you have nothing better to do.” I replied being polite. Dear God what was happening to me? I was never civil, well behaved or polite. It must have been Alan rubbing off on me. He was just so enthusiastic.

Austin looked at me suspiciously, “Maybe.”

“You can sit down anywhere.” Alan said to me. “I’m going to get the beers, would you like anything?”

I shook my head, “No I’m all good.” I walked into the living room and sat on the unoccupied couch as Alan went into the kitchen.

“Why are you being nice?” Austin asked in a hushed voice probably so Alan wouldn’t be able to hear.

“Because I’m a good person.” I answered, which was an absolute lie.

“Not from what I hear.” Austin answered looking down at the paper again.

“I thought you formed your own opinion of people.” I said remembering what he had said the night before.

“That was before I found out you are a liar.” He stated, still looking down at his paper.

“Everybody lies, some people just lie more than others.” I replied. “I’m trying to be nice but if you don’t want that then fine, I can act like a bitch. But I thought it would be a lot easier on both of us if we were civil with each other.”

“If you’re doing this to get laid, I’m not going to help you. Alan’s my friend and he doesn’t deserve some hussy.”

“I’m doing this to be nice, asshole. I’m not planning on leaving this circle of friends anytime soon and you obviously aren’t.” I answered exasperatedly.

“Asshole?” He said looking amused. “I thought you were trying to be nice?”

“I meant it as a term of endearment.” I replied.

“You really need to look up the definition of endearment if you think that’s a term of endearment.”

“Kids quit fighting.” Alan said coming into the room. He gave Austin an open beer bottle and then handed me a water bottle.

“I think you just got friend zoned.” Austin said to me laughing. “Nobody wants to sleep with their kids except for those creepy mountain folk.”

I pinched Austin, making him say ‘ow’. “Shut up, Asshole.”

“Bitch.” He said jokingly as he rubbed the spot I pinched him.
