My Words Cut Deep

I'm a Monster

“Ready as I’ll every be Carlile”

Alan stood up walking out of the heart clinic and made their way to the clinics parking lot. Once they got in the car, Alan paused before starting up the engine. “Okay, I don’t mean to pry, but you have been off all day man. What’s going on?” He turned to face his friend.

Austin played with the rings on his fingers, looking down in his lap. He opened his mouth several times to speak but couldn’t find the right words. Without looking at Alan he mumbled his words. “I may have a kid.” He continued to keep eye contact away from his best friend. Alan chuckled. “What speak up man, I swear I thought you said you have a kid or something.” His laughter died down after the silence that followed his comment. “Wait… are you serious? Pamela is pregnant?” Alan started to get excited, he knew how badly Austin wanted to be a dad and those two were perfect together. Austin shook his head. ”No, I-I may have a kid with someone else.”

Alan sat in his seat frozen, not knowing what to say. Had his friend cheated on Pamela? What was going on? “What do you mean with someone else?” Austin finally looked at his friend. “I don’t know I got a request for a paternity test in the mail. Like I haven’t slept with anyone behind Pamela's back… so I have no idea.” His voice slightly cracked, this whole thing has stressed him out. Alan turned on the car, starting to drive Austin and him to lunch. After about five minutes of silence, Alan spoke up. “It’s probably not yours.” Austin just nodded along. “I’ll just do it to prove to whoever the women is it’s not mine.” He had no idea who the women could be, her signature was so messy he couldn’t decipher it.

“I’ll take you to get it done.” Alan smiled sympathetically at his friend, if it was him, he would have just ignored it. Told the stupid women to go to hell. After stopping by a pharmacy and waiting thirty minutes for a prescriptions, they spent the next twenty minutes debating on a place to eat, driving around. He pulled the car into a parking spot once they had reached a nice restaurant for lunch.

-Skyla & Emmy’s point of view-

After about an annoying hour at the heart clinic, they were finally able to leave. Before starting up the car Skyla turned so she could face Emmy and Eliza. “Do we want to go out for lunch?” They both nodded with smiles, causing a smile to light up on Skyla’s face. After about fifteen minute drive they pulled into the parking lot of a very nice little restaurant. She bit her lip thinking how expensive this place looked, she felt a hand touch her wrist. “Lunch is on me.” Emmy winked before getting of the car.

Eliza climbed onto her mother’s back and Emmy locked up the car for Skyla. They walked into the restaurant and waited for a hostess that lead them to the second level and close to the back. Some people looked at Skyla with her child, noticing how young she was. She was used to disapproving looks of older people. The hostess paused when she realized they were out of seats and began to apologize. They were about to turn around when a familiar voice spoke up. “Skyla?” Turning towards the voice she noticed the ginger she had met at the hospital, he was sitting at a three person table, with someone missing but a drink there. “Oh hey.”

He smiled. “Are you guys looking for a place to sit?” She nodded and was about to speak up but he was already talking to the hostess. “Hey, can you pull over that table for two and make this a table for five?” The hostess nodded her head quickly, getting to work moving the table. She acted as if he was someone of importance and was trying to impress him. “Come sit.” Emmy smiled at Skyla,, nudging her. She took a seat next to the empty one, Skyla placing herself next to Alan and Elizabeth at the end. “So I was going to comment at the hospital, you don’t sound like you’re from here.”

Skyla smiled, as she ordered a Pepsi and water. “No I am here on some business and vacation, from Canada.” Alan nodded. “That’s cool, well welcome to California, if you need anyone to show you around, I’d be glad as long as your husband doesn’t mind.” Skyla looked at him confused and looked down at her hand, still sitting on her finger was the engagement ring from Ryan. She lightly smiled and took the ring off, getting a confused look from Alan. “Long story… but I’m not with anyone right now.” Giving her a sympathetic smile. “My offer still stands.”

Emmy wiggled her eyebrows at Skyla, which she just tried her best to ignore. Looking at the meue she heard a voice approaching them. “Alan? Who are these lovely ladies?” The sound of a chair moving. Skyla felt her phone vibrate, picking it up it was a text from Emmy.

F: Amelia

Don’t panic… but the other friend at the table is him…

Skyla was confused but it started to set in, the only other guy Emmy could be talking about is… Austin. She froze slightly until her name was mentioned. “This is Skyla, her friend Amelia but you can call her Emmy and Elizabeth? Skyla’s daughter.” Emmy must have introduced herself when Skyla became frozen in thought about the man. Looking up nervously, she sucked in a breath being almost across the table from her child’s dad. He didn’t seem to recognize the name, after all her signature was messy. “It’s Eliza – beth, not like the queen.” Austin smiled at her with such warmth, that she almost felt guilty for not spilling her guts then. A light tap on the foot, caused her to look at her friend. She was there for support and she was letting her know it‘ll be okay.

“Mummy I want Frenchie fries!” Elizabeth almost shouted excitedly. That’s when everyone noticed the waitress was standing at their table, everyone ordered. “Eliza what you say?” The little girl pouted and quietly asked. “Can I have Frenchie please. “ The waitress smiled and walked off.

“Your little girl is adorable, how old is she?” Austin asked innocently. Skyla was at loss for words but managed to get the answer out. “S-she’s four, turning five soon in September.” This was the most awkward and stressful situation she had been in a long time. She wasn’t sure if he could sense how familiar the child was. She looked and acted so much like him. As they ate it was scary to see how many mannerisms they shared and she hadn’t even grown up with him. Austin was going to hate her.
