The Letter

Chapter 40

Finally the god forsaken 6 hour flight was over I was minutes away from my aunt’s house, I had a cab come and pick me up and they took me over there. I was there and it looked exactly the same. The multiple cars, the green hedges, the lovely gothic style, god it was amazing.

I knocked on the door and the maid Maria answered. “Ashley!” She shouted. It’s only been about a year and a half since I’d seen my aunt, but I knew that this weekend was her annual dinner party. “Aunty Mara?” I shout. “She’s in her room dear.” Maria spoke. That was odd. I walk up to my aunt’s room and knock on the door. “Come in.” A weak voice answers.

I open the door and see a frail, old looking Aunty Mara. “Ashley.” She said quietly. “It’s so nice to see you.” She smiled. “You look so sick.” I frowned. “Oh darling, it’s just my time to go. Actually. The party’s in a few days. And I was desperately hoping to see you. I was hoping that you could throw the party for me. And your boyfriend uh… Ricky… or is it Oli? They could help you.” “Of course Aunty. Anything for you.” I smiled and walked from her room.

I called Oli. “Oli! Love. I need you to come to New York. My aunt is sick, and asked us to throw her party. She’s already sent out invitations. I need you here desperately to help me. Please?!?!?!?” I said into the phone. “Well damn, you spoiled my surprise, I’m already here love.” He laughed and there was a knock on the door. I opened it and there he was. I hugged him tightly.

“We have a huge party to plan, for 2 days from now.” I laughed awkwardly and he told me not to worry, that he had it covered. “The theme is gold and silver this year Oli!” I shout as I shut the door to my bedroom. Then I exited my room because I had no idea what I was even doing in there. “Oli, while you plan this with whoever, I’m going to go shopping, I love you!” I shouted “I love you too!” He said back and left to the mall.

As I was walking around a girl came up to me. “Mommy! Mommy! Look who it is!” The little girl said, I gave her a look and then looked up to see her mom. “Ashley? Is that you?! How have you been?” It’s the girl from the abuse group. “I’m alright, uh, I’m throwing a dinner on Friday, if you and your daughter would like to come, if your married, your husband too, you’re both welcome to come. Here’s the information.” I smiled and wrote it down on a piece of paper. “We’d love to. Have you seen Ricky at all?” She asks. “I saw him the other day, he’s in the hospital, his girlfriend shot him.”

She looked a bit shocked, “Guess he deserved it!” She laughed and continued on with her daughter, “OH! It’s a very fancy attire, it’s a gold and silver theme!” I walked on into the dress shop, I saw nothing that was what I was looking for. I walked up to the worker, “I need a silver dress, I’m willing to pay.” She smiled and walked to the back and brought forward a diamond studded silver dress. “Love.” I spoke. “It’s a $15,000 dress though ma’am. Are you sure?” She asked and I nodded.

I had THE perfect shoes to go along with it. I bought the dress and left the mall. When I pulled up to the house I saw a group of guys bringing stuff in and out of the house. “Oli?” I asked walking inside. “Ashley! Oh love. Hello. Sorry it’s such a mess. It’ll look better by Friday night, I swear.” He laughed and I nodded scarcely.

~Friday Night~

Oli was right, it sure to hell looks a lot better than it did Wednesday. It was beautifully gold, and the chairs in the dining room were gold and the table was silver. The walls were decorated, as was the ceiling and the floor. “Oli. How did you…? This is amazing!” I shout. My aunt calls for me through the intercom and I go up into her room. “Ashley, darling. How does it look? There was a lot of commotion these past couple days.” “Have you got a way I can take you down there Aunty Mara?” I asked her and she nodded and pointed to the wheelchair, “We can use the elevator I had put in dearie.” She spoke and I lifted my fragile aunt into the wheelchair and she showed me where the elevator was.

We made it to the first floor and I showed her to the dining room. “Oh Ashley.” She wept. It made me smile seeing how happy she was. “This is so beautiful.” “Oli did it all.” I smiled and she thanked him. “Ashley darling, can we speak in private?” She asks and I wheel her off into one of the many living rooms. “When I pass, I would hope you would accept my offer to live in my mansion. All of my money, everything is to go to you. If you choose to live here, thank you. But please don’t hurt my mansion. I’ve only got a week left to live, and I don’t wish to show myself tonight, but I would like you to say this to them darling. Thank you for all you’ve done for me. Please, take me back up to my room.”

She handed me a paper to say to all of the people coming tonight, about her, and about what’s happening in the event of her passing. I wheeled her up to her room and laid her back in bed. I hated seeing my aunt like this. She’s always been such a strong woman, but now she’s withering away…

I went into my room and put on my dress, I did my hair and makeup and put on my shoes and jewelry. Oli walked in so that I could do his hair and he was amazed by how beautiful I looked. “I have a speech to give and while I speak it, you’re to stand beside me.” I said and he nodded. I slicked his hair back just as I did almost 2 years ago. He smiled at me and put on his tux, the doorbell rang.

I heard the maid open the door and then I heard chatter. About 30 minutes later the whole house was full so Oli and I decided it was now time to walk and do the speech. As we walk down the spiral staircase everyone stopped and looked at us, the room was dead silent.

“Hello everyone, my name is Ashley, I’m Mara’s niece, you might remember me from the dinner party a couple years ago. This is my fiancé Oliver. My aunt is in a very ill state and has asked me to throw tonight’s party. She has also answered the question many of you have been asking. Once she passes, what is to happen to the mansion and all of her fortune, considering she has no children? It’s all to go to me. But I am not going to keep it all. I plan on donating regularly to help fight cancer and other charities. My aunt has left specific rules for me not to blow it all, which I don’t plan to do. I’m working on starting a career in photography and hopefully start my singing career. Also I will be supplying houses for the less fortunate, and will pay for their living until they get a stable job. Thank you all for coming, and I hope you enjoy your time here this evening.”

I finished the speech and they continued to talk amongst themselves. The drinks were being served and as I went to grab one I saw the girl from the abuse group and her daughter. “Wow, you live here?” She asks and I nod, “Kind of. Once she passes, absolutely. You’re both welcome to come and stay whenever you’d like.” I smiled and their eyes lit up, “Do you mean it?” Her daughter says and I get on my knee down to her level, “Of course sweetheart. You and your mommy deserve a happy life.”
