Ghost In The Mirror

And Then I Crawl Back Under The Stairwell To A Place I Call My Home

I walked home, backpack heavy with books and homework. I trudged along the empty sidewak with my earbuds in my ears blasting HIM's album Razorblade Romance and slightly bobbing my head along with the beat.

As I approached my apartment a small smile tugged at the corners of my lips. I know Im alone and that isn't something I should be happy about but that wasn't why I was smiling. I was smiling because I was proving that I don't need foster care. I can do this.

I felt my phone buzz in my pocket, sigaling that I had a call coming in. I pulled out the small flip phone and found that Austin is calling me.

"How was your first day of school?" He asks as I answer the call. I always tell him when something big has happened whether it be my first job or my first day of school. He's my best friend as of now and it sucks I can never see him.

"It was great actually. I met a few people. I don't remember half their names though." I admit with a giggle.

"That's ok if it was like, ten people." He tries to rid me of the guilt of forgetting my new friends names.

"It was eleven but same diff." I shrugged, earning a scowl from Austin for saying 'diff' instead of 'difference'.

"Why do you say that? It sounds so odd! Why don't you just say the full word?" He complains, making a laugh form at the back of my throat.

"The same reason that people don't spell everything out in a text. It's just easier." I laughed.

"It's still weird."

"Whatever. So how was school for you?" I asked, remembering that today was his first day as well.

"Pretty great. I made two friends named Phil and Tino." He exclaims happily. I could hear the smile in his voice.

"That's great!" I said, happy that he's getting around.

"Yeah. Im about to get ready for work now. I'll text you later."

""Ok. Bye Austin!" I cheered.

"Bye Tarra!" He says and I hang up the phone.

I open the door to my small abode and throw my bag on the counter before opening the fridge and pulling out a water bottle. I pulled my homework out of my bookbag and started on it.

As soon as I was done, it was nearing time for my shift at the shop. I quickly grabbed a small bag of Dorito's and started my walk to work. It was only five minutes away and thankfully I didn't have a unifom policy there. I only have to wear my badge that had my name on it.

I got there a few minutes before my shift started. I clocked in, grabbed my badge from my locker and started working at my assigned cash register.

The first customers I had brought a smile to my face. It was Josh and all the guys he introduced me to. Their girlfriends weren't around. As soon as Josh saw me his smile grew and he waved at me. I waved back as he made his way over towards me.

"I didn't know you worked here!" He exclaimed.

"I have for about a month now." I said. Josh nodded. "Can I get you guys anything?"

"Can we get two dozen donuts?"

"Yeah." I rang him up and took the money that he owed. I informed him that it would be about twenty minutes. He smiled and thanked me. He went back over to his friends as he waited.

I was confused as to why the boys were here without their girlfriends to acompany them sice they were all glued to one another's hip all day. Now that I think about it, Josh was the only one who hadn't had a female friend to call his. He was the only single one in his large group. I honestly found him to be the cutest out of all of them so the simple fact confused me.

Soon enough, the donuts were ready and I called Josh over and gave him his stuff earning a thankks in return. Just as he was about to exit the front door he handed the box to Ricky and walked back towards me. I scrunched my face in confusion as he just let out a small laugh.

"I was thinking that maybe, if you were off, that you could come over to Chris's house Saturday so we could all hang out. If you want to, that is." He says while nervously twiddling with his thumbs.

"I would love to." I smiled.

"Great. I'll see you tomorrow."

I pulled my t-shirt over my head climbed into bed. I had just gotten out of my shower and I was now really tired. I had a few texts from Austin but I didn't have it in me to reply. As my as my heavy eyes wanted to close and send me to dreamland, my mind wouldn't let me.

For some reason, my thoughts were clouded by the boy who was so persistent on getting to know me. That night, I dreamed of him.
