Feels Like Forever

Another You

“Shots!” Morgan signaled that she wanted to do more shots. It would have been our eighth round of shots in two and a half hours and I was definitely feeling it. Austin had bowed out after two because he was going to be the designated driver.

“I think I’m going to pass and stick with water.” I yelled over the loud music. I wanted to be able to start working on my Showcase in the morning and that wasn’t going to happen if I was hungover.

“Come on Lyric, live a little!” Morgan said trying to convince me to drink more and totally failing to.

“You still have Alan who’s willing to drink with you.” I pointed out. “I have things I need to do in the morning.”

“You’re boring.” She mumbled.

“Yes but you’re still my friend.” I replied. “Just go frolic and have fun with Alan.” I could tell there was something more between Alan and Morgan than just friendship by the way they interacted with each other. They weren’t outright making out or anything but small things. They constantly flirted with each other and snuck glances.

Morgan looked from me to Austin and then back to me and smiled like she thought I had some ulterior motive for getting rid of her or something. Which the only motive I had for getting rid of her was so she wouldn’t push me to drink more. She was extremely vigilant and knew how to get what she wanted. I was just going to let her believe anything she wanted to.

“Alright we’ll leave you two ALONE.” She said winking at me. I just wanted to do a face palm as she walked away with Alan behind her.

“What was that about?” Austin asked looking amused.

“Morgan’s just drunk and delusional.” I answered with a shrug. “She tries to pair me off with every single guy in sight even though I’m perfectly happy with being single and concentrating on my dancing.”

“Alan does the same thing.” Austin admitted. “Any single girl he meets I have to meet. I’m perfectly happy with just concentrating on the band and the music.”

Damn, who knew we had so much in common.

“So what got you into dancing?” Austin asked trying to make conversation.

“My grandma was a dancer for a ballet company when she was younger, so I grew up listening to her stories and going to recitals with her. She always wanted my mom to be into it but she wanted nothing to do with dancing. Which I don’t understand.” I explained. “But yeah, I guess I just wanted to be like my grandma and the dancers on the stage. They were just so graceful and beautiful.”

“You were really good today.” Austin pointed out. “And that was an interesting song that you danced to. I would have pictured all ballet dancers danced to like classical music. Did you chose the song?”

I nodded, “Yeah. I tend to choose songs that are out of the ordinary, I find them to be more challenging and more unique. And people tend to like them more because it’s a nice change of pace. So, what’s your story? How’d you get into music?”

“I think that’s a story for another time.” He answered vaguely. “How about we get going? You said you have some things to do in the morning.”

I was slightly annoyed that I had told him about myself but he was unwilling to open up to me. Yeah, I definitely didn’t need someone like him in my life. “Whatever.” I said putting on my jacket. “I’m just going to take a cab, so you guys can stay here and do whatever. No need to interrupt Alan and Morgan’s fun.”

I walked away before he could say anything.

***
Say you're okay
I'm afraid that tomorrow
Is just too far away
Fight the pain
It just feels like forever
Is crashing down on me
Down on me, me, me

I ran through the dance that I had been thinking about in my head as the music for ‘Feels Like Forever’ played in the small studio in our apartment.

“Why are you doing this?” Morgan asked turning off the music. She must have just gotten home from the club with the guys. “And why did you leave the club without us?”

“I’m just working on the dance part for this song.” I answered turning to her. “Now if you wouldn’t mind turning my music back on…”

“You’re pissed.” She answered, not turning my music on. “Why are you pissed?”

“It doesn’t matter right now. Just go to bed or whatever.” I answered not really wanting to tell her. It was really kind of stupid for me to be pissed. Sure I told some things to Austin but that didn’t mean he was obligated to tell me things about himself. I guess no matter how much I had said that I didn’t need a guy, I was subconsciously wanting to have a guy in my life. But I had gotten shot down.

“Come on quit brooding. It might be great for teen vampire movies but not in real life.” She replied sitting on the floor. She obviously wasn’t going to leave until I told her something.

I sighed, “I told some stuff to Austin and he didn’t feel like reciprocating.”

“What did you tell him? And what didn’t he reciprocate?” She asked.

“I told him about how I got into dance and then I asked him how he got into music and he just told me that it was for another time.” I explained and sat down in front of her.

“I kind of understand why he didn’t want to tell you at the moment.” She answered.

“I opened up to him and he couldn’t open up to me? How is that understandable?” I asked slightly annoyed that she was taking his side.

“It’s not exactly a happy story.” She replied.

“What do you mean?” I was confused. How could Austin getting into music be a sad thing?

“I’m not going to tell you. That’s for him to do.” She answered standing up. “But if you really want to know something about it without asking him out right, listen to the ‘Another You’ song that I played for you. And please get some sleep tonight.” She answered and then walked out of the studio.

I sighed and leaned to turn my music back on. This time I turned on the song that she told me to listen to. I laid on my back and listened to the lyrics. They were about losing someone and how they would always be there even though they were gone and how they were missed.

“This is pretty cool.” I heard a voice from the door way. Austin was standing there looking into the studio.

I shrugged my shoulders, “I love it in here.”

Austin stepped into the room and shut the door. I sure was getting a lot more visitors than I was used to getting while I was working. “So Morgan said that you were pissed and that I had to fix it?”

“You don’t have to fix it.” I replied looking at the floor, rather than at him.

He stood there looking around the room. It was a smallish room with a mirrored wall, wood floors and Morgan’s artwork decorating the other walls. It had a bar pushed up against one of the walls for me to practice the essential ballet moves.

“So who did you write ‘Another You’ for?” His attention shifted back to me.

“My mom.” He responded. “She died when I was seventeen.”

“Is that why you got into music?” I asked.

“Somewhat, but not entirely.” He responded. He sat down in front of me. His legs were stretched out, almost hitting me and he was resting back on his hands.

“Not entirely?”

“My mom died from some complication due to Marfan’s syndrome.” He explained. “It’s a disease that affects the body’s connective tissue, like the ligaments and the veins and arteries leading to your heart, along with other things. Well it’s genetic so they tested me and it turned out I had it also. It’s why I’m so tall and lanky. I was really into baseball and they told me that I wasn’t really allowed to do sports anymore or anything very strenuous. So I turned to music.” He replied. “I didn’t want to tell you earlier because it’s kind of a buzz kill to tell someone that your mom died and that you have a genetic disease that prohibits you from the sports you loved as a kid.”

I nodded, “Wow I was kind of a bitch earlier.” I felt bad that I just kind of stormed away from him at the club.

“It’s okay, I probably would have acted the same way if I was in your shoes. You did kind of open up to me even though you clearly weren’t really interested in me. You know with me not being your type and all.” He said with a smirk.

“How do you know that you’re not my type?” I asked looking at him suspiciously.

“I could hear you and Morgan talking in your room before we went to the club.” He answered.

“Creeper.” I answered with a smile, I turned the music off. "Well I’m going off to bed. See you in the morning.” I stood up.

“Good night. See you in the morning.” He replied.
