Feels Like Forever

Open Mind

Seven devils all around you
Seven devils in your house
See I was dead when I woke up this morning
I’ll be dead before the day is done

As the song ‘Seven Devils’ by Florence + the Machine ended so did my dance I was performing for a dance recital. Everyone in the audience stood and clapped as I bowed and walked gracefully to side stage.

“You were fantastic!” My friend Morgan nearly tackled me. She must have just gotten there in time to see my solo because she told me she had to pick some friends up at the airport.

“Thank you! You made it!” I said hugging her back.

“Of course I did.” She said pulling away. “I would like to introduce you to my two really good friends Alan Ashby and Austin Carlile.” She motioned to two guys standing behind her that I hadn’t noticed when she nearly tackled me.

Alan had red hair and was a bit taller than me but then again most people were. Austin was even taller with brown hair. They both had tattoos and nose piercings. Definitely the type of guys that Morgan usually hung out with regularly. She was the type of person who could get along with anybody but she preferred though, metal head, rockers. The two guys were good looking and all just not really my type.

“Alan, Austin this is my friend Lyric Cadence.” I hated it when she introduced me to people by my full name.

“Lyric Cadence?” Austin looked amused by my name.

“My parents were hippies.” I mumbled pulling a hoodie on over my dance costume.

“Far out.” Alan commented.

“Please never say that again.” Morgan said with a chuckle. “So how about we go to Metro tonight to celebrate your prowess on the stage.” Morgan addressed me. Metro was a club that we frequented when we wanted to have a good time.

“I should really be working on my showcase.” I had a month and a half before my Senior Showcase and I literally had nothing.

“You need a break, that’s what you need.” She responded.

“But I haven’t even started it.” I said exasperatedly as I lead the way out of the stage area and into the hall.

“It’s the music! I keep telling you. It’s too boring and old. Let me put together something for you.” She offered.

“I’m using the music my professor recommended and if you choose my music you’d probably choose some of that Satanic, screaming stuff.” I replied.

“Should we tell her we’re from one of those Satanic, screaming bands?” Alan asked Austin amused and I could clearly hear him. I glared at him; he wasn’t helping my case.

“It’s not satanic and it’s good, I promise. We can even go to the studio and I can play some ideas I have for you. If you like my idea we go to metro.”

I thought about it for a few seconds. I didn’t really have anything to lose from it. “Deal.”

I lead the way to the studio room in the building as Morgan and the guys followed me.

“You have free reign of the sound system.” I stood in front of the mirror and started to do some stretches to cool down.

“I have four songs that I want to string together.” Morgan explained while fiddling with her IPod and the sound system. She started playing a song and it started off nice and slow. “This is ‘Another You’.”

There was some screaming parts but it wasn’t overwhelming and I could understand what was being said. The flow and message of the song was actually really good. I could already feel a dance formulating in my head. I looked in the mirror to see Austin and Alan smiling. I didn’t know if it was because of the music or my flexibility, which amazed most guys. “I like this song.”

“The next song is ‘Identity Disorder’.” She said and the song changed to a more techno-y sound but still had the rock influence into it. It was obviously by the same band because the vocalists sounded the same.

I nodded, “Okay.”

Morgan smiled and switched the song, “’Would you still be there’.” Same band, a little more upbeat than the first two. But still obviously by the same band.

“All right.” I replied as I continued to stretch. I was kind of getting excited about the songs and wanted to start working on the dance for them. But I remained calm.

“And the last song is ‘Feels Like Forever’.” It started out with a guitar and grew louder as more instruments were added and then a husky voice started singing, followed by the smooth voice from the other songs. It had a nice beat that would work awesome for ballet.

“That has to be my favorite one.” I answered turning to Morgan.

“So you’re going to use them?” She looked by the fact that I admitted to liking the song.

“Yeah. You’ll just have to mix them so that it’s a continuous piece and maybe overlay some string quartet stuff in it and it will be good.” I answered nonchalantly. Morgan was a business major with a music minor and she was awesome with mixing stuff on computers so I know that she would have no problem with it.

“The clean vocalist is really good and really well balanced with the unclean vocalist. He’s pretty good too; I can actually understand what he is saying." I explained telling her why I liked the songs she chose out as compared to the other songs that she had played for me in the past.

“Who is it?” I asked curious.

“My band Of Mice & Men.” Austin spoke up.

So they had been grinning about the music.

“Do you mind if I use your music for my Showcase?” I asked being polite.

“It’s fine by me, as long as I’m invited to the showcase.” Austin answered with a smile. I noted in my head that he had a nice smile. Not that it really meant much…I mean he wasn’t really my type.

“Of course you can come.” Morgan answered for me. She smiled at Austin and then smiled at me.“So, Metro?”

I nodded, “Metro.”

***
“Austin likes you.” Morgan informed me as we were getting ready in my room.

“I doubt it, since we barely even talked.” I responded nonchalantly as I put my eyeliner on in front of my full length mirror. I was wearing a simple black skater dress with a leather jacket and heels. Morgan had helped me pick out the outfit.

“Doesn’t mean that he doesn’t think that you’re smoking hot.” Morgan answered sitting on my bed, I could see her reflection in the mirror and she was grinning at me.

“Doesn’t matter. He’s not my type.” I answered switching to mascara.

She sighed, “He’s every girl’s type. Tall, dark and handsome.”

“And pierced and tatted up.” I replied. “I’m not into that.”

“Bullshit. You’re only using that whole excuse because you don’t want to be in a relationship. But I think you should go for it. You need a little action in your life. And I do mean in between the sheets.” She said with a wink.

“That’s the last thing I need.” I mumbled and turned around to face her.

“No it’s the first thing you need. You’re always so tense, worrying about this and worrying about that. Not only do you need to get laid but you need a boyfriend. And Austin is boyfriend material.”

“I don’t think so.” I replied.

“To you needing a boyfriend or Austin being boyfriend material?” She asked looking confused.

“Both.” I answered and turned back to the mirror to finish my makeup.

“Come on, give him a chance. Don’t totally write him off because of the way he looks; he’s a really good guy.”

I quietly thought about my answer for a few seconds. If I didn’t at least tell her that I’d give him a chance she wouldn’t stop hounding me about it.

I turned to look at her. “Fine I’ll keep an open mind about him.”

It’s not like I was giving her a definite yes, or a definite no.
