Looks Can Be Deceiving

Blind To Boring

It was Tuesday and I had school. After such a nice weekend with Austin I really wasn’t ready to go back. I just wanted to stay with him. He made me feel so… warm. Whatever it was, I loved it. I opened my eyes and sighed when I remembered I was at my house. In my bed, waking up all alone. What had happened to me? One week I hate Austin’s guts, telling him to get off my front porch. Then the next week I’m sad that I didn’t wake up next to him. He was turning me to mush. I suppose I ought to get up. It was now or never. I sat up, pressing my feet down into my fuzzy carpet. It wasn’t as nice as the carpet in Austin’s room though. He had the really comfortable carpet. The kind that made you feel as if you were walking on clouds. I opened my dresser drawer, pulling out a pair of black denim shorts and a long sleeved knitted white sweater. Once I got into the bathroom, I pulled my hair up, brushing out the uneven parts on top. I grabbed a pony tail and wrapped it in my hair a few times, looking from side to side to see my long hair gathered neatly at the top of my head. I stopped when I noticed a small pink patch below my ear. I leaned closer to my mirror and ran my fingertips over it. I blushed a bit when I realized it was something that Austin had left behind. I hope no one noticed it. I shut off my bathroom light, grabbed my black choker necklace off my nightstand and made my way downstairs. I wasn’t especially hungry, so I skipped the kitchen and went straight to the front door after picking up my backpack off the couch. I locked the door and made my way down the sidewalk that led to my little black car. Mrs. Latch my neighbor was out watering her flowers. I smiled at her and waved as I grabbed some mail from my mailbox. Quickly, I ran my eyes over the addresses and collected that they were all just bills. I stopped when I recognized an address from England. It was a letter from my brother. I smiled and looked up when Mrs. Latch started talking to me.
“How are you sweetheart? I haven’t seen you around here for a few days.”
“Oh,” I giggled. “Yeah, I’ve been staying with a friend.” She raised an eyebrow.
“That’s not something you normally do…” she said, curiosity in her voice.
“Yeah,” I rubbed my arm. “He seems to have that effect on me.”
“Well, I’m glad you’ve been getting out and having fun. You must get bored locked up in that house all the time. Maybe me and Steve could have you two over sometime?”
“Sure, that sounds nice.”
“Well whenever you’re not busy, let me know and I’ll cook something wonderful for you and your new… friend,” she smiled.
“Sounds good; I’ll see you later, Mrs. Latch.” I waved goodbye before getting into my car. I set down my backpack on the passenger seat and started up my vehicle.

I never really noticed just how boring school was. Before Austin, I was always in my house reading or watching TV, so I didn’t have too much to compare school to. When I had no life, school was fun. But after spending the weekend having actual fun, I realized how agonizing this was. I probably checked my phone every ten minutes to see if Austin had text or called, but he hadn’t at all. Maybe he was still sleeping. I sighed and tuned back into the lecture that my biology teacher had been giving for a good forty five minutes now. I had stopped taking notes a while ago. Usually I was writing so many notes that I had to stop occasionally because I got hand cramps. Not today. Today all I wanted to do was get out of here. It didn’t seem as if it was going to happen any time soon.
“Now, I hope you all have studied. As I told you yesterday, we’re going to be having an exam on Friday. It will go in the gradebook as a quarter of your final grade.” Friday! What? That was only three days from now. There was no way I was going to pass it especially since I missed yesterday’s lesson and daydreamed during todays. The bell rang as my classmates excused themselves and left. I stood up, gathering my books before walking up to my teacher’s desk.
“Is there any way I can take the test next week?”
“Why?” she questioned.
“Well I missed yesterday’s lesson… I’m not too prepared.”
“You can get the notes from another student. The class is required to take the exam all at once. There are no exceptions.”
“I don’t know anyone from this class though.”
“Well then I guess it’s a perfect opportunity to make new friends now isn’t it?” she smiled, standing up. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting to get to. See you tomorrow Miss White.” I sighed and walked into the hallway, already late to my last class. Gym.
