Looks Can Be Deceiving

Sad Eyes

I opened my eyes only to cover them with the back of my hand. Last night the view was beautiful, but while I was trying to sleep, the sun was quite bothering. I moved into a shadow that was cast on the bed, allowing me to open my eyes. I looked around the bedroom, noticing that Austin was gone. Where could he have gone? The bottom of my stomach dropped when I remembered telling Austin about my illness the night before. Did he run and leave me here? No, he wouldn’t do that. That didn’t sound like something Austin would do. I rolled over hearing something crunch under me. I lifted up my arm to see a piece of paper that had the hotels logo on the top. I smiled at Austin’s messy writing. ‘Hope you slept well, beautiful. I went downstairs for breakfast with the guys and wanted to let you sleep. Don’t go anywhere until I get back. See you soon ;)’ I smiled and lay back down, pulling the sheets up over my head to keep the light out. I poked my head out from the top of them, glaring at the large windows that surrounded me. I quickly threw back the sheets, jumped out of bed and made my way over to the curtains, pulling them closed before running back to the bed. Goose bumps rose as I settled back in the warm sheets. I closed my eyes enjoying the darkness.

Austin’s POV-
I rode the elevator up to the floor that Pandora and I shared the past night. Ryan and Tally stood next to me chatting as they waited for their floor to come up. I looked down to the Styrofoam container that held breakfast for Pandora.
“So,” Tally leaned against the elevator wall. “Have you and Gielle been talking?”
“Eh,” I rolled my eyes, running my hand through my hair. “Sort of… All this divorce shit is taking forever.”
“What do you mean?” Ryan rose and eyebrow. “You two are still married.”
“I mean, really, that’s what is physically is, but mentally, both of us know we’re separated.”
“But, by law, you two are still married,” Tally said, his eyes big. I sighed, looking down. “Does Pandora know?”
“No,” I said quietly.
“You have to tell her. She knows you were married before, right?”
“She does,” I nodded.
“Man, you really have to tell her whats going on. She’ll be pissed if she finds out from someone else but you .”
“Who else would be discussing my private life with her besides me?”
“Gielle could. She’s pissed you left.”
“If anything, I should be the one who’s pissed. She cheated while I was in the hospital then left me shortly after my surgery.” Tally sighed. “It doesn’t matter anymore. I found Pandora and soon Gielle will no longer be part of my life.”
“Are you going to tell her about the baby?” Ryan whispered. I swallowed.
“Some other time…” my mind clouded with sadness, thinking back to the day I found out that Gielle lost the baby. “It’s too early in our relationship to bring that up.”
“Sorry for bringing it up, Austin,” Ryan said softly. I shook my head giving a small smile.
“It’s okay. It’s good to have a reminder. I get so lost in Pandora, but I can’t let what happened slip through my mind… it’s something that I have to deal with and talk about to Pandora in the future.” The elevator dinged as Tally and Ryan excused themselves from the now silent air.
“Talk to you soon?” Tally asked. I nodded. “Take care.” They walked off as the door closed, moving up to the top floor. I bit at my bottom lip, my stomach churning thinking about the once alive human being that I had helped to create. I looked up to the ceiling, trying to keep the tears back. Maybe what happened was a blessing. Maybe God knew that Gielle and I weren’t going to work out. The elevator doors opened, letting me out into Pandora and I’s hallway. I kicked the thought of Gielle and our baby out of my head, putting on a smile as I slid the key card into the hotel door. It softly beeped before letting me in. I walked through the main hall, past the dining room and into the bedroom. Pandora must have closed the curtains this morning after I’d left. I set down her food on the table next to the bed and smiled down at her. Her small body rose up and down as she breathed. I crawled into bed next to her. I slid my hand across her stomach and to her hip, pulling her over to me. I propped my head up on my hand, running my fingers through her soft hair. She turned her head to me, pressing her forehead to my chest.
“I’m so tired, Austin…” she said below a whisper. I chuckled.
“You don’t have to get up until you want to.”
“You’ll… get bored…”
“No I won’t. Just go back to sleep.” She suddenly opened her eyes, looking sad.
“Are you okay?” she asked, more awake then she’d been a minute ago.
“I’m fine, why?”
“You’re eyes… you look different.”
“Different?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Your eyes are always smiling, but today they’re not. Is there something you want to talk about?” she sat up a bit. I looked down.
“There is… but today’s not the day to talk about it, alright?”
“Is everything okay?” she wondered, worried.
“Everything’s fine. Please don’t worry about it. I just feel that it’s too early in our relationship to discuss it. It has nothing to do with you or us or how I feel about you.” She nodded, keeping her alert eyes on me.
“Does it have to do with what I told you last night?” I could see her tense up.
“No,” I shook my head, “nothing to do with that. You just have to trust me with this, okay?”
“Promise it has nothing to do with last night?”
“Promise,” I smiled, leaning down to kiss her. She balled up my shirt in her fist, pulling me down closer to her. “Oh,” I pulled away, reaching over to the bedside table. “I brought you back some breakfast.” I handed her the takeout box as she sat up Indian style.
“Thank you.”
“No problem,” I smiled. “I thought you’d be hungry.”
“Now that you mention it, I am.” She opened the box, pulling out a piece of watermelon. After a second of chewing she looked over to the clock above the TV. She sighed.
“What?”
“Today’s Monday isn’t it?” I nodded. “I should be at school right now,” she said softly, playing with her fingers.
“You want me to drive you?”
“I really don’t wanna go today…”
“So take a day off. Everybody needs a day off once in a while.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“Want to watch a movie? We don’t have to check out for a few hours.” She lay back, pulling me with her as she snuggled into my side.
“As long as you’re next to me, I don’t care what we do.”
