Looks Can Be Deceiving

I stood in front of Hannah’s bedroom mirror, pulling the top of my dress up.
“Hannah, I don’t know about this dress…” She looked at me from the end of her and Oliver’s bed, frowning.
“Why? It looks great on you!”
“It’s a little… revealing.”
“No it isn’t, you just aren’t used to having that much of your chest exposed. It’s okay to show a little skin,” she smiled.
“But I don’t like it… I feel cheap.” She stood up and grabbed my hand.
“Let’s go ask Oli what he thinks.” I followed her down the stairs and into her living room to see Oliver sitting on the couch with a beer in his hand, watching basketball.
“Hey love,” he smiled.
“I need your opinion.” He sat up and muted the TV. “Do you think this dress is too revealing on her?” she stepped aside, letting Oliver see my outfit. He cocked his head to the side and looked me up and down. I ran my hand through my hair and shifted my weight as I started to feel uncomfortable.
“Not at all.” He looked to me and smiled. “Got a hot date tonight?” he laughed. I rolled my eyes.
“I wish I could say no.”
“Who’s the lucky fella?”
“Austin,” Hannah blurted. Oliver smiled.
“Aw, you guys would look so cute together.”
“We’re not together. He’s just taking me out for dinner and that’s it. I told him I never wanted to see him again after tonight.” Oliver frowned.
“Why not? He’s a good guy, Pandora. You should give him a chance.” He stood up and walked into the kitchen, causing me and Hannah to follow.
“I don’t want to give him a chance. I already don’t like him.”
“What did he do?”
“He’s a drunken Rockstar who uses girls,” I stated bluntly.
“I drink and you still like me,” he smiled, gesturing to his beer. “Besides, that’s not all that fair of you to say that about him. You just met him last night didn’t you?” he rose an eyebrow, sitting on the counter.
“He’s a touring musician who meets thousands of girls every night. You mean to tell me that he doesn’t sleep with them?” I questioned, looking at him like he was crazy. He shook his head.
“I’m faithful to Hannah when I tour,” he smiled, gently rubbing her back. “Austin’s not one for random hookups, Pandora. Never has he once taken a girl back to his bus, and that’s a fact.” I shrugged, adjusting my dress once more as a knock came at the front door. I sighed and rolled my eyes as Hannah ran to go get it. Oliver looked to me. “He’s got a big heart, love. Don’t be too harsh.”
“Come on now. Am I really that harsh?”
“Do you really want me to answer that?” he asked, setting his beer down on the counter as Austin walked in with Hannah. Austin waved to Oliver and smiled at me, looking me up and down as Oliver had done earlier. Hannah stepped in front of me and gave me a hug.
“Have fun,” she smiled before kissing my forehead. I turned to Oliver and wrapped my arms around him as he held onto me tightly. I had always looked up to him as an older brother. Shortly after meeting him I found myself trusting him; and I had never trusted a male in my life.
I closed my eyes and suddenly felt anxiety build up in my stomach. I let go of Oliver and stepped back a little as he kept his hands on my waist, looking down at me.
“Are you alright?” I bit down on my lip and nodded.
“Let’s go into the living room,” Hannah suggested, pulling Austin along with her.
“What’s wrong?” Oliver frowned.
“I don’t know if I can do this.”
“Pandora, it’s just dinner… Stop stressing so much. Austin will take good care of you, I promise. I know you have a hard time trusting and getting close to people, but he’s the right person to trust.” I nodded, looking to the floor. “Now go out there and let loose a little bit.”
“Thanks Oliver,” he nodded as I turned and walked into the living room to see Hannah and Austin chatting. He looked over at me and smiled.
“Ready to go?” I nodded and waved goodbye to Hannah as Austin led me out to his car. He opened the passenger door for me and waited until I got in to take his spot in the driver’s seat.
