With Me Tonight

The New Year

"3... 2... 1... HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

I sit on the stiff couch, cup in hand as I watch everyone in the room around me jump up. There's a significant cloud of smoke lingering in the air over everyone that gets pushed around when people throw their arms up and cheer. Others turn to tackle the person next to them for that mesmerizing new years kiss while someone pops the top off the champagne bottle.

The new year. It means so much to everyone.

People have their resolutions, their false idea that this year will be the best one yet. That they will make it the best one yet.

But we all know those resolutions end up falling short eventually.

And as I sit here in the dark room, watching everyone jumping around and kissing and popping champagne, I feel more utterly alone than I have in a long time. I start to regret coming here and not staying home to celebrate with my family. Why did I?

"Hey, Doll Face," A smooth voice is at my side, leaning down to give me a quick kiss on the cheek. Oh yeah, that's why I came. But I guess no New Year's kiss for me. "Sorry it took me so long, I got caught up talking to an old friend," he says as he moves to sit next to me, throwing an arm over my shoulder as he takes a drink of the beer in his cup.

"It's okay," I say lowly, a little upset as I look around at the people in the room.

I can see people on the opposite side, one guy that grabs a girls hand and pulls her over to a door, pushing her up against it and kissing her roughly before they went inside and their figures were lost.

"Why haven't you drank any of your beer?" Dominic asks, nodding down to the red up in my hands that I rest against my lap. He has to lean in close to my ear for me to hear him over the noise of the party.

"Oh," I say as if I almost forgot about it. But I didn't. It has been torture having a cup of beer right under my nose most of the night. Dom doesn't know that I don't drink, so I can't blame him, but I wasn't pleased when he gave it to me and then left to go get more drinks. "Guess I haven't been thirsty," I shrug.

Dominic nods, taking another sip of his own beer. I feel a little bad for lying to him, but we've only been dating for a little over a month so we're not really at that point in our relationship yet, I guess.

And as my boyfriend, he doesn't seem to mind.

Dom's arm moves from dangling over my shoulders to wrap around my waist so he could put his hand suggestively on my hip and pull me into him. "You look real good tonight, Babe," he husks into my ear. Chills run down my spine and I grip a little harder onto the cup in my hand as his hot breath that smells of the beer I wish I could have rolled onto my skin. I almost think about kissing him just so I could taste the alcohol I craved to have, but quickly banished that thought away when I grew too distracted at his lips on my neck.

"Yo, Dom, is that you?!" A low voice called out, getting Dom to lean away from me and look over his shoulder.

"No way, man!" Dom cheered, getting up completely off the couch to go shake hands and thump chests with another guy that must be one of his friends. "What's up?" He asked with a smile, shocked that he was seeing this guy.

I had no clue who he was, but that made sense since this is the party Dom was invited to by his old college buddies.

I actually went to high school with Dom, that's how I knew him. Then one day a little bit ago we ran into each other at the store and got to talking so now I guess we are dating. It's crazy how it happened, but even more crazy how I let it happen. I swore to myself no more dating and boys and shit, I had to focus on taking care of myself and my family. But I think I really just wanted the distraction and company to not feel so alone and empty.

And it just so happened that I ran into Dom who seemed perfect for this distraction.

"Hey, babe," Dom's voice snapped me out of my thoughts, looking up to him as he leaned over the back of the couch for me. "Will you be alright here? Jace and I are gona go head out to the bar to catch up."

As much as it was kind of sucky that he was going to leave me here at the party he brought me to, I was kind of okay with it. This means that I can avoid what would have happened if he stayed and then brought me home with him. I wasn't ready for that.

"Yeah," I give him a small smile. "I'll be fine, have fun."

"Mm," he leans down and connects his lips quickly with mine. "I'll text you, okay?"

"Kay."

He winks at me while he stands back up straight and then turns to head out with his friend. When he's out of my sight I sigh, leaning my head back against the couch asking myself a very valid question. What the hell am I doing with my life?

But, sadly, I don't have an answer. So I huff out a breath of air and push myself up off of the couch that seemed to have sucked me into it. I eventually got up and set my cup down with disgust on the nearest table before I start to push my way through people to get to the exit.

The cool air swarms around me when I get outside, cooling down my skin and filling up my lungs. I shove my hands into the pockets of my sweater as I start to walk down the driveway, watching my breaths roll out of my mouth and into the air like a dragon's fire.

It was pretty cold out, a light layer of snow and frost on the ground, but the good thing is that this house was only a block or so away from home. Yeah, I do have to walk home, but that's okay. It's peaceful.

I watch my feet as I move down the side of the street, putting one in front of the other and even trying to walk heel to toe as I go on. But soon, that gets boring and I end up just taking in the dark sky and breathing in the cool air.

It was a beautiful night out, one perfect to take this midnight stroll in and let my mind wander.

I start to think about the new year and what it will be like. I'm not sure what's in store for my future, but I'm ready for it. Or at least I think I am.

I'm ready for something new.
