Meet My Dedication

The Storm

I dropped Gavin back off at his Dad's apartment, and went home. When I pulled in the driveway, I noticed mom's Ford Flex and Milly's Kia Soul was gone, and dad's Dodge Ram was pulled up.
"Shit, what's he doing home early?" I got out of the car and went inside through the side door, and straight into my room. I was alone, and knowing dad, he'd gone straight to the Jack and in a bad mood. I don't remember a time where he was happy, or even content. I tried to make it seem like I wasn't home, or asleep, or something. I crawled into bed, put in my headphones, grabbed my Ellen Hopkins book, and drowned out the world.
Well, I tried to, at least....
Dad practically ripped my door off it's hinges coming into my room. I pulled out one of my earbuds and stared at him.
"Usually, people knock on the door, to be polite." I spat at him.
"Shut up, how long have you been home, you stupid bitch?" I could smell his alcohol breath from the other side of the room.
"Hi to you too, dad." I went back to reading.
"Don't be smart with me, kid." He came up and dragged me out of bed by my hair, "you left the dishes on the counter, again! How the hell am I supposed to come home to this?!"
At this rate, I was going to be bald and deaf by the age of 30, but I was used to this.
"Milly was home all day, I've been at work." I tried to loosen his grip on my hair, before he threw me to the ground.
"Don't like to me, your sister isn't in charge of the dishes, that's your chore."
I sighed, "everything is my chore! Milly doesn't have to do shit around here." I prepared myself for the possible outcome of an attack coming.
And I was right, he slapped my face so hard, his ring had sliced open my cheek, and I fell to the ground. It followed by getting kicked in the stomach a few times.
"You're an ungrateful little shit, you know that? You don't even deserve to be alive." He slurred and walked out into the garage.
I saw it coming, and even then, nothing stopped the tears from flowing down my face.

I collected myself and limped into the bathroom, to clean myself up. I locked the door behind me and got my scissors from the drawer of the counter. I looked at my cheek in the mirror, and then down at my wrists...
The sensation of releasing my pain from my flesh left me smiling, which seemed to really be the only thing that could nowadays. It didn't stop the tears from falling, but it numbed my emotions faster than the Vodka I had stashed in my room, and that was all I needed.
I waiting, sitting on the cold tile floor, in silence, trying to forget the pain. I tried to forget that My best friend wasn't dead, and her husband in a coma, or that my parents favored my sister over me, or that they hated me. I tried to forget that I didn't really have anyone special I could relate to, or that the only people who made me feel remotely alive were people I'd never actually talk to. I tried to forget that I was alone.
I wanted to forget, start over, or just not exist.

I woke up to a knock on the door. "Mikey? Open up, let me in."
Milly.
I got up slowly, my ribs hurting from dad's kick. I looked at my face in the mirror, make-up stained tears dried on my cheeks and my wrist covered in blood. I washed it off, wincing at the burn of the water on the fresh cut.
I unlocked the door, but hesitated to open it. Milly took that as me saying she could come in. She looked at me, with understanding eyes, and hugged me. I backed away from her and headed to my room. She followed and I slammed the door in her face.
She didn't get mad, or even irritated, I don't think.

I watched her slide an envelope underneath my door. I stared at it for a minute, then picked it up and opened it. Inside was my ticked to Warped Tour with a VIP pass and a note:
I HOPE YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SAY TO AUSTIN CARLILE WHEN YOU MEET HIM!
-MILLS

I stared long and hard at the note, not knowing how to act or respond. I was really going to meet Austin Carlile? My hero? The only male figure in my life that I could really count on?

I hugged the papers close to my chest and sent a quick prayer to whoever was listening.
"Thank you," I whispered.
