The Fallout

The Big Bad Wolf

Matt’s P.O.V

“Tom, wake up…” I lightly pushed the younger man in the side as I leaned up in our bunk, my head was splitting; and that was unusual for me…I never got headaches. Tom groaned as his tired eyes fluttered open, revealing equally tired orbs; he glanced at me skeptically.

“What’s wrong, Matt?” he asked as he too, leaned up; his head nestled in the crook of my neck.

“I don’t know…I called for Austin and Oli but they didn’t answer…I'm gonna go look for em.” Without warning Tom's arm slid across my chest, not in a comforting way; but almost defensive.

“Something’s wrong.” He stated cautiously, but I could hear worry seep thicker then honey in his voice; he never was good at hiding things. I sighed, looking down at him, catching his eyes which held a steady iridescent glow.

“I want you to stay here, I'm going to find them; hold down the fort. Do whatever you have too, but stay safe Tom…” he opened his mouth to protest but I quickly hushed him by pressing my lips to his. His lips were chapped, likely due to the bi-polar weather conditions we had been experiencing, but this didn’t bother me in the slightest. There was something thoroughly intoxicating about the way his lips felt whilst pressed against mine. I don’t know how it happened, how we happened to be exact; but I was happy that it did. Tom was polar opposite of me; he was docile, loving, and considerate; while I was harsh, hostile, and brash. We meshed perfectly. He anchored me, I protected him; without a doubt, we were destined to wind up this way. I rested my forehead on his, noticing a stray tear that slipped down his porcelain skin, I kissed it in order to make it disappear.

“Can I tell you something, Tom?” I whispered hastily, I needed to figure out what was going on; but I also longed to share this moment with him, I was afraid we wouldn’t have many more like it.

“Anything,” he countered, his hand snaking its way up to rest carefully on the back of my neck.

“I love you.” I breathed out, it was true; but it didn’t make admitting it any less scary. The look on his face was a mix of shock and glee; and without even saying it I knew he must feel the same.

“I love you too.” He resolved, happy tears sprung up in place of their twins that held sorrow; I didn’t feel the need to wipe these ones away.

“Please be careful,” he mumbled as he let go of his hold on me, and allowed me to slide out of the bunk. I rushed while getting dressed; throwing on black skinny jeans and a dark gray v-neck, I tiredly slipped on my black vans as I looped a leather coat around my arm just in case, before securing a maroon beanie on my head. Tom slid out from the bed too, and for some reason I couldn’t explain; I was prepared to burst into tears, but reason outweighed my emotion.

“Don’t come out looking for me, I will come back as soon as I find them. Just keep this place locked up,” I reassured him by laying a hand on his shoulder, our eyes locked briefly and I silently wondered why this almost felt like a goodbye. I leaned down and pressed a kiss to his forehead before giving him a brief hug, he was shaking harshly.

“I will…” he mumbled as I strode to the front of the RV, my hand had just touched the knob when I heard him call out my name one more time; my head spun around instantaneously.

“…never mind.” He replied before plopping down on the couch, I nodded my head as I slipped out the door, making sure it was secure in its place before I left. The wind outside had picked up, which was odd considering I had never heard it before; leaves swarmed in heavy gusts, ones that were nearly blinding. It was dark out, the moon providing little light and the eerie road we were parked near seemed to be beckoning me forward. As if the wind was pulling me down that way. I obeyed, after slipping on my coat, my feet numbly clicked on the pavement and if I listened close enough, I could hear whispers amongst the bustling weather.

“He’s coming.”

“Who?”

“The shadow man.”

“Isn’t he dangerous?”

“He’s going to hear us.”

“We have to go to the Church, its safe there.”

“Safe? How are we ever safe from monsters?”

I shook my head, trying to decipher whether or not this was a figment of my imagination or not, but as I rounded a small bend in the road I was beginning to think it was real. As my eyes locked onto a certain area, I couldn’t help but gasp. Candles lined the street, somehow not being blow out by the hazardous storm that seemed to be brewing; and after I walked past their glowing light; they extinguished in my wake. Chills ran up my spine as I found myself standing on the porch of a white building, a church. I wasn’t hearing things. I could hear more voices inside, bellowing, shouting and yelling at someone or something to stop fighting back; my immediate thought was of Austin and Oli. I twisted the knob but it wouldn’t budge; and on instinct I kicked it as hard as I possibly could. The door splintered enough to cause a hole to gape in the structure, after a few more blows it was blown wide open. Darkness. It was pitch black to the point where I couldn’t even see myself, but the yells shrunk to whispers and I was reminded that I wasn’t alone. A primitive growl escaped my lips, and the world was suddenly flushed into a odd shade of green; but I could see.

“His eyes, their glowing yellow.”

“Do you see those teeth? They look like drawings for crying out loud.”

“I heard his shadows use them too, but they ripped people in half...I bet they were razor sharp. I wonder if his are the same way.”

People, I was surrounded by a huge mass of people, all looking slightly afraid from what I could see in my current situation. They couldn’t see anything but the teeth that must have made a presence on my face, and my eyes which always turned iridescent when I was threatened. And in that moment…I was terrified.

“Matt! Can you hear me?” a voice yelled over the talks of the crowd, and I could instantly identify it as Austin's, my eyes were sweeping the rows as I stomped my way down the aisle, this place was huge; nothing like the outside would have hinted at. I finally stumbled across a stage, and without contemplating it, I jumped up on it. At long last I caught a glimpse of Austin, whose eyes were covered in what could have been a cloth and his hands and feet were bound; Oli was next to him in the same state.

“I’m right here guys, what’s going on?” I mumbled cautiously,

“Matt…you shouldn’t have come here…please tell me your alone…” Oli spoke up, I could hear agony in his voice, and what he was hinting at was unsettling.

“Yes, I'm alone…” I muttered as I tried to take a step towards them, but something snagged onto my arms, something else snaked around my legs. Rope. I lashed out, trying to break free of the confides but whoever was handling them was far too strong. Pain shot through my back, as I felt something lodge deep into my skin, into my bones; something was sticking out of my back, something sharp. I hit the floor hard, suddenly not able to stand or move or do anything other than cry out in pain.

“I can’t see what I'm doing! Turn on the lights!” someone hollered,

“Idiot! Don’t do that! If we turn the lights on he will kill all of us, while those two rely on their eyes for their strength, he needs light so he can summon those beasts!” another man yelled,

“MATT! SAY SOMETHING! ARE YOU OKAY?” Oli screeched, the pain in his voice did little to make me feel better. I was bleeding profusely, my vision blurring as hot tears seeped through my eyes. I couldn’t see anymore, it was dark once again, my hearing was going in and out and I cursed quietly when something sharp was pressed into the back of my head; I knew what would happen next;

“You two have to make it out of here…you have to fix this mess…” I breathed out heavily, “Tell you know who…I'm sorry...he knows being careful isn’t something I'm good at…you two…If I get into heaven…I’ll tell your families…and Tino you both said hi…I'm sorry...” I sobbed into the floor boards as I listened to Austin and Oli beg our captors to stop, but I knew it was futile. I was going to be killed one way or another. The sharp blade was being driven into my skin before I could fully grasp the pain that was rocketing throughout me, as the knife pierced my skull I closed my eyes in defeat, thinking back to the look on Tom's face before I left; and wondering what it was that he so desperately wanted to tell me…but didn’t. As the blade pushed past my bones I felt myself start to fade away, Tom being the last thing to ever cross my mind.
