It's Complicated

Let Her In

I woke up the next day to someone knocking on my door. “Coming.” I mumbled even though there was no way that they could hear me. I got up from my bed and walked out into my living room. I opened my door to reveal Austin standing there.

“Where’s Alan?” He asked without so much as a hello.

“Good morning to you too.” I responded.

He looked at me for a minute as if he was thinking something through. “Good morning?” He finally responded.

“Alan’s not here. He went home after the movie but he’s coming back over for breakfast. You can stay if you want some.” I finally answered his question and stepped aside so that he could enter my apartment. “How do you know where I live?”

“Shayley told me.” He answered taking a step into the apartment. “So he didn’t stay the night like you guys were planning.”

I shook my head and headed toward the kitchen. “Nope.Shayley had nothing to worry about.” I filled my tea kettle with water and put it on my stove. “Would you like any tea?I currently don’t have any coffee to offer you.”

“I’ll just take some water.” He answered. “Danny’s going to give you a hard time.”

“Danny’s an asshole.” I went into my fridge and tossed a water bottle at him. “I don’t really care what he says about the whole situation. He kind of forfeited his opinions on my relationships when he never told me that James cheated on me.” James was Asking Alexandria’s drummer. He and I had been going out for quite some time when he finally fessed up to cheating on me. Danny and everyone else in the band knew but never told me.

“You were with James?” Austin said looking surprised.

I nodded, “Yeah for like a year and a half.”

“It’s hard to believe that you were with someone for that long.” Austin said with a smirk as if he didn’t believe me.

“I wasn’t always so bitter.” I replied leaning against the counter. “I just kind of gave up caring because I figured no one else cared.” I realized that I said a bit more than I wanted to and decided to change the subject. “So why’d you come looking for Alan?” I turned away from Austin and started to work on getting my tea ready.

“I figured we could all hang out today.” Austin shrugged his shoulders. I could tell he was lying; you don’t lie to a master liar.

“Shayley put you up to this didn’t he?” I called out his lie.

“It’s the least I can do.”

“Well no you’re going to have to spend the day with us.” I answered. “Not that that is such a shame.”

“What’s on the agenda for today?” Austin asked.

“Getting food, make said food for breakfast, eat breakfast and then Alan was talking about getting a cat tattoo or something like that.” I replied.

“We have to buy the food before we eat it. Don’t you have food here?” He asked looking amused.

“Unless you count dinosaur chicken nuggets and tequila as good breakfast foods than no.” I took a sip from my cup.

“I’m sure Alan would be thrilled with the dinosaur chicken nuggets.” Austin chuckled.

“Oh he was.” I answered looking at Austin for a couple of seconds. I set my cup on the counter and leaned forward. “So you know some things about me. What’s your story Mr. Carlile?”

“I’m sure you can look on the internet and find out things about me.” He answered looking down at his hands.

I shrugged my shoulders, “Doesn’t mean that the information is true.”

“What do you want to know?” He asked looking at me.

“Middle name?” I started simple.

“Robert.” Austin answered with a smile.

“This one’s going to be tougher.” I said and paused like I was thinking of another question but I already knew what question I was going to ask. “I noticed that you have a scar down your chest yesterday. What’s it from?”

“I had open heart surgery.” He answered. “They had to replace one of my heart valves.”

“You’re pretty young to have heart problems.” I said skeptically.

“I have Marfan syndrome, which affects my heart valves.” He replied.

“And that’s why you’re so tall and gangly.” I noted.

“You know what it is?” He asked looking at me surprised.

“Of course I do.” I said with mock hurt. “I thought Shayley informed you that I’m smarter than I looked.”

“Doesn’t mean you would know what Marfan’s is.”

“Well I have a secret to tell you that you can’t tell anyone else.”

He looked intrigued. “What is it?”

“I used to read medical dictionaries for fun.” I admitted. “My babysitters would get pissed at me because they thought that I was only reading it for the naked pictures. They didn’t believe a ten year old would genuinely be able to read or actually like to read about diseases but they fascinate me.”

“I didn’t expect that.” Austin said seeming surprised.

Right as I was about to say something there was a knock on the door. “It’s open!” I yelled and a couple of seconds later the door opened and in walked Alan.

“What are you doing here?” Alan asked Austin as he walked up to us.

“He thought it would be cool to hang out with us today.” I answered. Neglecting to tell him that Shayley was the one that wanted Austin to check in on us.

Alan nodded and looked me over, then gave me an amused smile. “Are you going to wear your pajamas shopping?”

“Nope.I’m going to go get changed now.” I smiled and left the boys to their own conversation.
