Come Waste Away With Me

We Are Now In This Together

With my luck Alex walked in just minutes after my phone call with Mason. Rian, Zack, and Jack trailed behind him along with the guys from Pierce the Veil. By the looks of it I had nowhere to escape from Alex’s stare. He knew something was up and he was determined to find out what. “Hey, how are you holding up?”
“Austin is stable; he just needs to wake up. You are all welcome to go visit.” My voice is monotone.
“That’s good news but I was talking about you. How are you holding up?” I could tell Alex is tired. He performed last night not surprised with him being tired.
“I’m okay.” I placed a smile on my lips. “I’m in need of a good smoke though.”
“I got you covered.” Mike smirked.
“You are not smoking.” Alex started to reach out for my arm but stopped himself. “Can I talk to you?”
“I need to go check on Austin.” I turned on my heel, making my way back to the hospital room. I sat down in the vacant chair that sat right next to Austin’s side. “You have a huge crowd here today Aussie.” I spoke in a hushed manner.
The room erupted into soft chatter. I stayed silent just watching everyone’s movements. I jumped every time someone raised their voice or made any fast movement in my direction. I hated feeling this way. I hated that I couldn’t participate in any conversation without feeling that I’m talking too much or that I will say something wrong. At this point I think everyone is wondering what is wrong with me. I think most are probably blowing my odd nature off by thinking it has to do with Austin. But I know for a fact that Alex and Alan know that it is not the only reason I am acting this way.
My phone vibrated in my hand making my heartbeat quicken. Kylie’s name flashed across the screen. I sighed out of relief and opened the message.
Kylie: Mason is serious about his warning Ari, I don’t want to see you get hurt. I know you are worried about your brother but please come back. For your own safety.
I frowned at the words. I knew that his threats were true but I couldn’t leave I promised that I would stay until he woke up. I don’t back down from my promises.
Me: I promised I would stay; I will face the consequences when I get back.
Kylie: Don’t come back; tell them the truth.
Me: You know I can’t do that.
Kylie: You can.
I locked my phone after that message. I wasn’t strong enough to look them in the faces and tell them why I left. They would be so angry and disappointed in me. I cannot deal with them all judging me. I rubbed my shoulders trying to calm myself down before a panic attack started. I laid my head down on the hospital bed still gripping onto Austin’s hand. I would not let the tears escape my eyes. The noise level died down as the crowd of people started to decrease. The only people left in the room were Alex and Alan. The others went home to shower or change or do whatever they needed to do. I didn’t blame them; who wants to sit in the hospital for days?
Kylie and I become close after I was forced back into Mason’s life.
It was the day after I arrived and Kylie spoke to Mason, somehow convincing him to let her take me shopping. Maybe he allowed it since they were siblings. Honestly I did not want to do anything with her since she is a complete bitch. As we walked down the street, I began scratching my arm without realizing.
“Don’t do that.” She pulled my hand away from my arm.
“Why? Do you not want people to see you with a depressed girl?” I snapped.
“I never meant those things I said to you in school. I only wanted to keep you away from Mason.” She spoke quietly.
“What?” I didn’t believe her.
“He is dangerous; from years of experience I would know.” She continued after a short break. “I thought that maybe if I treated you like shit you wouldn’t get close to my brother. That horrible thing he did to you.”
I stared at her in shock. “I don’t understand.”
“I am going to tell you something that I have never told to anyone else okay?” I nodded. “My father is a nightmare, ever since I was around six he began to drink. He would come home in an angry rage and take it out on my mother. As I got older the punishments for me got worse but Mason never got hit. Soon my father began teaching Mason how to act; he would hit me and my mother just as my father. Mason did what he did to you as well when I was only fourteen. You see he was raised to become this way. It still isn’t an excuse for how he acts.”
I felt my body begin to shake with anger. “I cannot believe he would that to his own sister!”
“Keep your voice down.” She looked around frantically like someone was going to jump out.
“I’m sorry.”
“I should be the one who is sorry. I made your life a living hell and know it’s just going to get worse. Why did you come?” I studied her closely as she spoke and noticed a covered bruise on her neck.
“He threatened my brother.” The pain in my chest worsened at the thought of my brother.
“Why didn’t you just call the police?”
“They would have just ignored it just as they did when he raped me. I would rather give up my life than my brothers; he has a bright future. All I am is a depressed girl who has no reason to live.” I never thought I would be talking to her out of all people about this.
“You do have a reason to live though.” I looked at her questioningly. “That boy from the last day of school. I saw the way he looked at you. If that wasn’t love in his eyes than I don’t know a thing about love.”
“He doesn’t love me.”
“I think differently about that.” She smiled.
“Wait didn’t you send Brianna after him?” I narrowed my eyes.
“Why would I do that? I would never I thought you left, I though my job with keeping you safe was done. She went after him? That bitch.”
“Isn’t she your friend?”
She laughed. “No, I hate the girl. Haven’t talked to her since school ended.”
“Oh.” I thought about that silently.
“Well we are now in this together.” She linked her arm with mine just as we reached a store she desired to look in.
“Do you want me to bring you home for a change of clothes?” Alan asked abruptly causing me to jump out of my thoughts.
“No.” I answered way too quickly. “I mean I have extra clothes here.”
He leaned back sighing. “Okay.”
“If you need air Alan, go for a drive.” I smiled. “Austin will understand.”
He nodded slowly as he stood. “I think I will. Call if anything changes.”
I watched him as he left. Something seemed different about him. Once he left I couldn’t keep the tears in anymore. I began to sob uncontrollably. “Alex.” I said between sobs.
He came over to me so quickly I didn’t have time to process that he picked me up and gently sat me on his lap. “Shh, it will be alright.”
“I’m not going to be.” I mumbled into his chest.
“What are you talking about?” I didn’t mean to worry him but I could tell from his voice that he was. My voice stayed silent after that; I couldn’t risk any off them getting hurt.
