I’m actually terrified. We’re all waiting to go on and the boys are ready. They’re just talking and joking and hitting each other then shouting Pantera! They’ve done this one hundred times before. “You okay?” Jaime asked.
“Just a little nervous,” I shrugged.
“Don’t be. We’re doing Hold On Till May last. All you need to do is come on when told, sing your piece, then wait until Vic is finished and walk off with us,” he explained.
“Easy for you to say,” I mocked.
“Listen, about earlier. I’ve been thinking,”
“Don’t tell me. Not before we go on,” I pleaded.
“Okay,” he smiled.
“Over here!” Vic called. We walked over and he smiled at me. “Ready?” Vic asked everyone.
“Action,” Mike said.
“I’m not doing your silly chant,” I shook my head. But they started clapping. I rolled my eyes and joined in. “Start with Tony,”
“One, two, three, four . . .” Vic said.
“Hey Tony,” they chanted.
“What?”
“The devil,” we chanted.
“Huh?”
“The devil is everywhere,”
“Hey Vic,”
“Yeah?”
“The devil,”
“What?”
“The devil is everywhere,”
“Hey Mike,”
“Whiskey,”
“The devil,”
“Drink it,”
“The devil is everywhere,”
“Hey Jaime,”
“Coke,”
“The devil,”
“Smoking,”
“The devil is everywhere,”
“Hey Alyssa,” they came to me.
“Yo?” I asked.
“The devil,”
“Yup,”
“The devil is everywhere,” we finished. I grinned and put my hands in the middle on top of the others. “PTV! Woah!” we said and broke. I smiled widely and Vic wrapped his arm around me.
“See you later,” he said. They hurried off onto the stage and I waited on the sidelines.
I watched them preform their set quietly.
Someone came over and handed me a microphone as they started playing Hold On Till May. As it got closer to my part I stepped on the very edge and waited.
“If I were you, I'd put that away,” Vic sang. “See, you're just wasted, And thinking about the past again, Darling you'll be okay. And she said,” I walked slowly out on stage and towards Vic.
"If you were me, you'd do the same,” I sang and joined him. “'Cause I can't take anymore, I'll draw the shades and close the door, Everything's not alright and I would rather..."
Vic wrapped an arm around me and grinned. “And as the sun went down we ended up on the ground,” he sang. “I heard the train shake the windows, You screamed over the sound, And as we own this night, I put your body to the test with mine, This love was out of control, Tell me where did it go?” he finished. “You were awesome,” Vic told me.
“Thanks,” I muttered.
“Have you had a good time?!” Vic yelled into the microphone. “You’ve been fucking awesome! We’ll be signing later on and meeting some of you! So come find us! We’ve got a merch tent so go and check that out!” he said. “Thanks to Alyssa who’s filling in for Jenna,” he said and I waved. “Fucking awesome!” he said again and waved to the crowd. We walked off stage and the others followed us. Vic and Mike hugged me tightly and I grinned, cringing from their sweat.
“You stink,” I commented.
“Come on,” Mike urged. We walked off and they put their instruments away. We walked towards the buses and I saw Jaime look at me. I shrugged and he smiled. We got to our bus and the others sat down. I went into the back lounge and Jaime followed me. I sat down and looked at him expectantly.
“You were good,” he told me.
“Can we skip this shit,” I offered.
“Sure,” he laughed. “So, I like you,” he told me quietly.
“I like you too,” I smiled widely.
“But,”
“Why is there a but?” I groaned.
“Because there just is,” he rolled his eyes. “I’m not your age, if I was Vic and Mike might go with it more,” he explained.
“So, what?”
“I want to see where things go, Lyssa. If things happen, they happen. I’m not going to prevent it,”
“If things happen will you tell Mike and Vic?” I asked and bit my lip.
“Yeah, sorry,” he shrugged.
“Okay,” I smiled a little. “Thanks,” I replied. I leaned over to him and kissed him softly on the cheek. Jaime smiled and I grasped his hand before opening the door and leaving him alone.
