The Beginning

If You Can't Hang

I awake with a start, rubbing away the sleep from my eyes. I'm not even sure how long I've been sleeping. I look around the room for a clock but see none. I let out a sigh of frustration, my head hurts and I feel sick. I get off the bed and yelp when my feet touch the cold hardwood floor. I saunter out of Austin's bedroom and into the living area. Austin is standing by his kitchen sink which is off to the side of the small and cramped 'living room'.

"Ah, Sleeping Beauty has awaken!" Austin joke, handing me a cup of coffee.

I practically vacuum up the hot brown liquid, savouring its flavour.

"Thanks." I mumble rubbing my tired eyes.

"Anything for the lady." Austin responds happily.

"Why are you so happy?" I ask.

"What, I can't be happy without having a motive?" Austin asks incredulously.

"No." I grumble.

"You know, I hear chocolate works great for PMS." Austin smirks.

"Shut up." I growl.

"Well, if you must know, I've come in contact with someone from my past." he answers with a smile.

"Who?" I ask.

"Just a girl I used to date." Austin answers with an indifferent shrug.

"Oh?" is all I can say, now feeling uncomfortable, "What time is it?"

"It's 6:25" Austin replies, taking my now empty cup of coffee and placing it into his sink.

"Oh, I should probably get going." I mumble, making my way back to Austin's bedroom and closing the door behind me.

I grab my original clothes and change quickly, wanting to et out of here as soon as possible. I really didn't want to hear about some other girl, but for some reason I felt like my heart was breaking. I let out another dramatic sigh and head back to where Austin is.

"Leaving so soon, eh?" Austin asks.

"I probably should." I nod.

"You just used me to get into my bed?" Austin jokes.

"Oh yeah. Cos I'm one of those girls." I laugh, but it sounds forced and he notices.

"What did I say?" Austin asks.

"What do you mean?" I ask back.

"Ever since you woke up you've been in a shitty mood and I feel like it's over something I've said." he
explains.

"It's nothing Austin, I just think that I should be getting back to Kat and maybe study form my Music Theory test I have on Monday." I lie.

"Sophia, I'm sorry if I-"

Austin's interrupted by the sound of his apartment door being knocked upon. Austin holds up his hand as though to excuse himself, he then opens his door. A tall and skinny blonde girl with a fake tan stands in the doorway.

"Ah! Austin, long time no see!" she squeals, and to me it sounded like a pig being squeezed to death.

"Hey Perrie!" Austin greets, letting her inside the apartment; her face drops when she sees me.

"Another one of your girls Aussie?" she asks.

"No, this is just my friend Sophia." Austin introduces, "Sophia this is Perrie, my ex girlfriend."

"I didn't realise that you're so friendly with your exes." I say, rolling my eyes at the glare Perrie shoots my way.

"Technically, we're in an on and off relationship, or better known; we're 'friends with benefits.' Isn't that right Aussie?" Perrie asks innocently turning to Austin who looks very nonchalant.

"We were, but then you left for a while Per." he responds shaking his head.

"Are you with this slut?" Perrie suddenly asks, glaring at me.

"No! No, she's just a friend!" Austin laughs, and I feel my heart drop into my stomach.

"I'm just going to go." I mumble heading for the front door.

"Yeah, you probably should. I hear that they're looking for another prostitute down by the corner." Perrie snickers.

"Oh wouldn't you know." I counter.

Perrie looks shocked and whips around to look at Austin.

"Aussie, did you just hear what she called me?!?" Perrie screeches.

"Per, calm down. She's leaving anyway." Austin sighs, and I really fight back the urge to punch him.

I start walking towards the door again and hear Perrie call out at me.

"Don't let the door hit your skanky ass on the way out!" she shouts, but I ignore her and keep walking.

I feel tears start to form at the corners of my eyes and I thank the Lord for not having a breakdown back in the room. At some point on my way to the elevator I hear footsteps running towards me.

"Sophia! Wait up, you forgot your phone!" Austin calls, but I ignore him too.

He finally catches up with me and puts a hand on my shoulder. I flinch and he pauses, resting his hand on that spot.

"Are you okay?" he asks, concern filling his angelic-like voice.

"Wouldn't you like to know." I answer harshly.

"Are you...crying?" he asks, spinning me around so I'm not facing him.

"Give me my fucking phone and leave me alone!" I say angrily raising my voice.

"Why are you crying? Is it because of what Per said? She didn't mean it, sometimes it takes her a while to warm up to new people." Austin tries to explain, but I shake my head.

"I want to go home, so give me my phone." I say more firmly.

"Not until you tell me what's wrong." he says.

"Why can't you just go back to that stupid blonde bitch and leave me the fuck alone?!?" I'm practically shouting at him, "I don't need or want you in my life! I have good things going for me and I don't need all
the drama that comes from being around you!"

"Drama? What drama?" Austin shouts back; I can tell he's getting angry.

"The drama of Perrie or the fact that I don't understand what's even happening between us!" I shout, tears flowing freely down my face at this point.

"What are you talking about, we're friends!" Austin yells.

"Are we? Because I don't want to be 'friends' with someone who won't even stick up for me when I'm getting harassed!" I wail, waving my arms for emphasis.

"Harassed? Perrie would never hurt you, and I figured that you could stick up for yourself." Austin says, trying to calm his voice.

"Shut the fuck up and give me my phone, I'm leaving." I say holding out my hand.

"No, I mean, why do you even care what Perrie says? You and I know it's not true." Austin pushes.

I shake my head, not in the mood to tell the story of my life.

"Phone Austin." I say again.

"Why are you so difficult?" Austin asks.

"I'm difficult?" I ask, raising my voice again, "You're the one who won't give me the phone!"

"And you're the one who won't tell me what's really going on." he counters, "I think that you're jealous."

"Me? Jealous? Of what?" I ask incredulously.

"Of Per, you starting acting weird when I even mentioned contacting one of my exes." he smirks.

"You know what, keep the goddamn phone, I don't even care." I cry, turning my back on him.

"See? You won't even admit that you're jealous." he laughs humourlessly.

"Goodbye Austin." I whisper, stepping into the elevator and watching his face disappear behind the metal doors.
