The Beginning

Now Come One, Come All To This Tragic Affair

I wander the streets of New York aimlessly, not really wanting to go back to the dorms, but not exactly sure where to go.

I end up standing in front of Austin's apartment building for 10 minutes, even though the idea of him coming outside scares me a bit. After a while a small silver Volvo pulls up at the curb I'm loitering at. The driver's side window is rolled down and Colby's face appears.

"Sophia? What are you doing all the way out here? It's 8 o'clock!" she exclaims in surprise.

She then realises that I've been crying and her face morphs into compassion.

"Get in, I'm on my way to see Kat anyways." she informs, putting her car into park mode for me.

I walk around to the other side of the small car and pull open the passenger door. Sliding into the seat I
look down at my hands, avoiding Colby's questioning glances; thankfully she doesn't ask any questions.

"Thank you." I say barely audible.

"No problem, you're just lucky that I was around and found you." she say.

"Why were you on your way to see Kat?" I ask.

"I called her to talk to her and she sounded like she'd been crying so I decided to pay her a visit." Colby
answers, swerving the car around a corner.

"Oh." was all I managed to say.

It had been a long night and all I really want to do is curl up in my bed and sleep, but if Colby was coming
over for a visit things would have to wait.

"Here we are." Colby says, pulling the car into the dorm's parking lot.

She cuts the engine and steps out of the Volvo, I follow in tow. Walking to the entrance of the dorms she stops suddenly.

"Can I ask, before we go in, how upset has Kat been?" she asks.

"Very." I reply.

Colby takes in a deep breath and starts her way through the halls. Once we come to Kat and my dorm she knocks quietly.

"Kat? It's Colby and Sophia, can you let us in?" she asks quietly.

Kat opens the door fairly quickly, and it looks like she's calmed down some.

"Sophia?" Kat asks in shock, "I thought you were with Austin!"

"I was, but we got in a fight." I say.

"She's pretty heart broken." Colby adds.

"Come join the club." Kat laughs humourlessly.

I walk into the room and belly flop onto my bed, I'm done with today.
Kat sits wordlessly on her own bed, to the left of the room, and glances at the floor.

"Alright, what's going on with you guy?" Colby asks.

"Neal..." Kat starts, and I look up expectantly, "Neal found somebody new." she starts to cry again.

I stare in disbelief, never having thought that Neal would be able to do something so horrible to Kat. I
could tell that Colby felt the same way.

"What's that bitches name?!?" Colby shouts, startling us all.

"That's not it," Kat wails, "He's gay!"

"Oh shit." Colby whispers, causing a small but sad smile from Kat.

"He told you this?" I ask, "Is this why you were so mad?"

"No," Kat starts to explain, "He had a message from my mother. Apparently she doesn't approve my choices in trying to make it in the music business."

"But you got into one of the most prestigious music schools!" I exclaim, looking at her in disbelief.

"Nothing can please that woman." Kat says rolling her eyes, "She wants to take me out of here and send me to medical school, or somewhere that will bring me a 'stable future'."

"You should perform for the Christmas showcase and show her that this is one of the best decisions you
have ever made." I say.

"That's a really good idea!" Colby agrees with a broad smile.

"You think?" Kat asks.

"Yes!" Colby and I exclaim in unison.

"I'll think about it, but enough about me, what happened with you and Austin?" Kat asks, turning to face me.

I inform Kat and Colby about what happened between us only hours ago and they hang on to my every word.

"What a douche!" Colby says angrily, "He has no right to call you or any other girl jealous!"

"I agree with Colby." Kat nods.

"I know, but I was a bit." I hang my head.

"It doesn't matter, you just don't do that. He needs to give you some space." Colby adds.

I sigh and close my eyes, "I think that I might like him."

"Are you going to tell him?" Kat asks.

"No, that's would only make him more conceded because I'll have admitted to being jealous." I explain.

"Make him jealous." Colby says suddenly.

"Yeah?" I ask.

"Show him that the blonde bitch isn't you." Colby laughs.

"You know what, that might work." Kat agrees.

I ponder the thought, tossing the idea around inside my head. It could work.

"How would I do this exactly?" I ask.

"The three of us will go shopping tomorrow, so that way you have more than just band tees to wear.
Maybe you even buy some short skirts." Colby declares, "Can I sleep over?"

"Sure, this could be fun..." Kat smiles.

"Alright, but what's your deal?" I ask Colby.

"He proposed to me." Colby shrugs, telling us about her long time boyfriend Jake.

"HE WHAT?!?" Kat shouts.

"Shhh!" I warn, not wanting to wake anyone in the rooms next to ours.

"Jake proposed." Colby repeats.

"Did you say yes?" I prompt.

"I said that I wasn't sure, and he got mad." Colby mumbles the last part, "I mean, he's going into the navy
and I don't want a Dear John relationship, you know?"

Kat and I nod and the three of us sit quietly. Kat finally yawns and I lay back onto my bed.

"Tired?" Colby asks.

"Yes." Kat and I say.

"It's been a long day, let's get some sleep. We can talk about this in the morning." Colby decides and we all agree.

Sleep takes over once again, falling into a dreamless state.
