The List

The List

Matty saw me and his face lit up. He was like a kid on Christmas morning. I hurried over to the bar where he was sat and he stood up to meet me. Matty wrapped his arms around me and squeezed me. I laughed and he kissed me on the cheek. “Hey Kay’.” Matty grinned. I sat down next to him and ordered a drink.
“Hey, how are you?”
“Busy.” he laughed.
“How are the Memphis May Fire boys?”
“We’re fine,” Matty smiled. “But how are you?”
“I’m okay.” I shrugged.
“Kayleigh...” he urged.
“Fine,” I sighed and took a sip of coke and vodka. “I’ve been better.”
“Yeah,” he nodded. “How was the funeral? I’m sorry I couldn’t make it.”
“It was rough,” I replied and tucked a strand of dark hair behind my ear.
“Ryan isn’t in any pain now. You need to think like that,” he reminded me and took my hand. Matty squeezed it and I smiled a little. Ryan was my big brother. He passed away from stomach cancer two weeks ago. He was only one year older than me, making him twenty seven, but there was so much he never got to do. He was my beautiful big brother.
“I know,” I replied. “All my family on my mother’s side have gone back to Spain thank God. I’m so sick of them spouting all their bullshit when they didn’t even know Ryan.”
“I understand.” he nodded slowly.
“There was something I needed help with.”
“Okay.” Matty urged.
“I know you know a lot of people.”
“I’m not making you an album.” he joked.
“Don’t be silly. You know I’m tone deaf,” I teased. “You see, Ryan had this list. A list of things he wanted to do before he died.”
“A bucket list?”
“Right,” I nodded. “Well, he wrote the list a few years ago, but because of the severity of his cancer he couldn’t do a single thing on the list. He gave it to me before he died,” I explained and passed Matty an envelope. He turned it over and pulled out the list. There was a note still attached to it – ‘Kay’ do them for me. Every single one and before you're my age. You never know what might happen. Ryan x’.
“There’s a lot of things on here.” Matty stated.
“I know, twenty nine things, the same as his birthday.” I sighed.
“You know you’re twenty seven in five months. It isn’t long.”
“I know, Matty. I just thought you might be able to help.”
“Hey, Kay’,” he stopped me. “When did I say I wouldn’t help?” he asked and I grinned.
“So you will?” I asked as he passed me back the envelope.
“I think I can. I helped someone out a few years ago.”
“What do you mean?”
“I introduced a friend’s sister to someone. They got married two months ago. I think he owes me one.” Matty explained. “Hang on,” he breathed and got out his phone. He put it to his ear and I bit my lip. “Hey Jaime, it’s Matty.” he said and laughed. “I’m good, thanks man. How’re you?” he asked and I rolled my eyes. “Are you still at home?” A pause. “Awesome. Listen, I need a favour. . .”
