Perception Falls

All The Beach Boys Look Like Sharks

I walked over to Diana's door, looking in at the room.

'Knock knock.' I said, tapping on the wood. Her room was carpeted in a light grey, and the walls were painted a light beige. Another person stood in the middle of the room, her stance friendly. She had spiky bright red hair and was very small. She had brown eyes and a smile a mile wide. She was holding a plastic bag and had a small candle in a light pink shade in her hand.

'Hi!' She said brightly, placing the candle on a desk which had been set up and threw the bag onto a bed, which was opposite the desk. 'I'm Hayley.' She tossed the plastic bag onto a bed, which had been set up, before running over to me and wrapping her skinny arms around me. Shocked, I didn't respond, but she didn't seem to care. She pulled back, saying, 'You must be Diana's friend. It's nice to meet you. I hope I'll be seeing you around.' It was very fast and I hoped she wouldn't always be this talkative.

'I'm Jessica,' I said, finding my chance to sneak in half a sentence. Diana was standing beside her bed, straightening the sheets.

'Oh, well that's cool. I'll just leave you guys to it.' Hayley whisked herself out of the room, and I heard her knocking on a door.

'Sorry about her.' Diana said softly, seeming intimidated by the pixie.

'It's fine. My roommate hasn't shown up yet. Do you need any help unpacking?' Diana shook her head.

'Honestly, I'd like to get out of here before she breaks my ears.' A twitch of a smile appeared on Diana's face, and I took her hand, pulling her out of the room.

'I told Erin that we'd be taking a tour around campus.' I said, as we started our way down the stairs.

'Another one? You must know this place like the back of your hand.'

I laughed, before saying, 'I was thinking we could head down to the beach, actually.' I wiggled my eyebrows at Diana. 'Check out them hot surfers.' Diana giggled, before pulling on my hand.

'That sounds like a lot more fun.'

A short drive later and the crystal blue ocean was staring us in the face. I breathed in the air deeply, the salt making me scrunch up my nose in disgust. Diana sat next to me, an arm dangling out of the car. She seemed uninterested in her surroundings, and I saw the bracelet tattoo around her wrist. It was quite a simple message, friendship > love, and it had a weave around it. The bracelet was coloured in various shades of brown, with the text being black. An exception was made to the word love, which was bright red and seemed to be dripping down her wrist.

'Who's that?' She asked, pointing out to the crashing sea. Her normal bracelets his the tattoo, and I sighed internally.

The guy who was out on the waves seemed familiar, with black hair.

'Isn't he that Andy guy?' I asked, hopping out of the car as the wave crashed around Andy. I heard Diana's door slam shut.

'Maybe.' She didn't look as if she wanted to hang around, but this guy intrigued me - and was pretty cute. I walked down onto the beach, Diana trailing behind me. Spreading out on the sand, Diana preferring to stand ankle deep in the surf and collect shells, I put my head in my hands and watched Andy. He was bare chested, wearing only board shorts. He was fit and toned from what I could see, and had a sleeve completed and was working on the second one.

'Quit your daydreaming, Jess.' I heard Diana say. She was now cross legged beside me, her hand tracing patterns on my back.

'What do you mean?'

'We've been here nearly an hour and you haven't been able to take your eyes off dreamboat.'

'Oops,' I muttered absentmindedly, a wave finally knocking Andy off his board. He paddled into shore, shooting us a quick grin before coming over.

'Hi, I'm Andy.' He said in a deep voice. 'You're friends of Alan, yeah?'

'Oh, no,' Diana filled in quickly. 'We just knew him in high school.'

'Are you Diana?' He asked, turning to her with a puzzled expression. She nodded, seeming to be taken aback.

Andy smirked, and his eyes twinkled with knowledge. 'Sure,' he said, 'just friends.' He gave Diana a wink and she blushed, turning around and stomping off. I bit my lip and tried not to laugh. Andy turned back to me and gave me what must have been his winning smile - it was cute, but I wasn't going to let him get to me that easy.

'So, you know who Diana is?' He nodded,

'Alan gave us the run down after we saw you guys. Speaking of knowing people,' Andy tacked on at the end of his original sentence, reaching a hand up and rubbing the back of his neck, 'I would like to get to know you better.'

'Oh, really?' I asked, shifting my weight onto one leg. He nodded solemnly.

'I'll pick you up tomorrow at seven?'

'You don't know where I live.' I answered, still keen on not being sucked in by this gorgeous stranger.

'You're a part of Erin's dormers, yeah?' He smirked, knowing he had me there.

'Fine.' I said, trailing after Diana. 'Make it seven fifteen though, and don't be late.'

'Okay then, Jessy.' I laughed softly and caught up to Diana, who was waiting behind a tree.

'"Jessy"?' She said, smiling. 'Someone's got the hots.'

'Who, me? For him? No way.'

'Who, him? For you? Yes way.' Diana said, her words and tone childlike.

'Oh, shut up. You're being silly.'

'No, I'm not.' Diana started dragging her feet in the sand, creating patterns. She stuck her hands in her pockets and danced around in a circle, kicking up the sand and making it fall all over my legs.

'Hey, don't do that.' I said absentmindedly, watching her smile widely.

It was a rare thing nowadays to see Diana smile. It was nice, the way her eyes shone and she suddenly looked a few years younger, her expression carefree.

The sun was still high in the sky, no where near an acceptable time to be back in the dorm and convince Erin we actually had been on a tour, so we walked down the waterfront, entering stores and getting a bit of window shopping done.
