Take A Picture

A Dream That Revealed Something

I had a dream that night, which disturbed me beyond belief. In my dream I was holding a photograph of a rooftop, with a girl in it. But that girl wasn’t me. I could only see the back of her. She looked as though she was pacing, and she was looking out over the city. In my dream, I took this photograph down to my darkroom, and as soon as I got under those red lights in the garage, the picture started to move. She was walking back and forth, and waving her hands around as if she was angrily saying something, but she never turned back, so I couldn’t quite see her face. The photograph had turned into some kind of video on paper, playing out what had happened. I continued to hold it, and watch intensively as things played out. The video looked like it was made from a perspective, and whoever’s it was, they walked closer towards the girl, while she was still waving her hands around. You can see two hands grab onto hers, and then all of a sudden, the video goes to falling. Just completely falling down the side of the building, and then the eeriest part, was that it looked as though the perspective had been caught up in some trees on the way down. Then the photograph fades to black.
Was that me? Was I the perspective? Was this a memory being played out in my dream, in the form of a photograph, because I was trying so hard to remember everything this way? I woke up instantly and cried out, because this had meant, that if this was a memory, I hadn’t fallen, I was pushed…
I startled out of my bed and scrambled down the stairs, running into the living room where all of the photographs were scattered around the coffee table. I knew what I was looking for, a girl with dark hair, tall and skinny. She must have been in the photographs somewhere. She was in my dream, I even recognised her, almost like déjà vu when I saw her. I jumped as someone placed a hand on my shoulder.
“What are you doing?” Oliver leaned over me, breathing down my neck as I continued to spread the photographs everywhere over the coffee table, searching desperately before I forgot what she looked like. “I said, what are you doing?” He raised his voice this time and I stopped, leant back and tried to look at the photographs from a distance.
“I remembered something…”
Oli almost jumped for joy, he grabbed my arm and shook me saying “What? What did you remember!?”
I sighed because I couldn’t find the pictures of the girl anywhere. “I don’t know. I had a dream…” I said, my sentence trailing off because I realised how insane I sounded. Just because I had some whacky dream doesn’t mean it actually happened… right? “Uhh…” I said after a while. “Don’t worry, actually. Now I think about it, it doesn’t really make any sense anyway.”
Oli looked puzzled, he rubbed the sleep from his eyes and then yawned. “It’s nearly three AM.” He said finally. “What did you dream about?”
I shook my head. “It’s stupid, but I dreamt about the fall.”
His eyes widened. “The fall?”
I looked towards the front door, and then glanced back. “I felt like I didn’t just fall, but I was pushed…”
“Nonsense!” He yelled. I felt relief flood over me. “That building, you were doing some photography there, you told me yourself. We had just had an argument, and you stormed out with your camera, alone.”
I pushed my lips together for a second and then said, “But how do you know I was alone? I could have met someone there?”
He laughed. “Well, you’ve only ever known me, Alice and Mercedes since you had moved here. I used to check your phone all the time, you never texted or called anyone else. Plus, the passer by who saw you fall, he reported to the police that you had been climbing around the building’s roof near the edge, and that he had watched you for a while, and he said he never saw you with anyone else.”
I wanted to believe him, but his case wasn’t that firm. I felt as though he was telling me what I wanted to hear, but there was more to the mystery. I’m not an idiot, I can’t have just wandered up there to take pictures, and then have fallen off the side of the roof. That sounds totally stupid.
