Take A Picture

Budweiser

I wanted to leave the house today, get some fresh air and maybe spend some time with Alice... and book an appointment at the hospital for a pregnancy test and even a scan. Oliver seemed to think the last time we had sex was at least two months ago, if not more.

Alice met me outside a coffee shop, we went in and ordered some cappuccinos, and then took a two seater table by the window. The sun was shining in through the window, enough to cover Alice in bright sunlight, but I was shaded by a building across the street that was positioned so perfectly.

"So Alice." I said. "I know you saw those pregnancy tests in the cupboard. The empty ones."

Alice covered her mouth in shock. "You're not..." She said, suddenly bursting out in excitement. She almost started crying, and then through her fingers she yelled, "I'm going to be an auntie?"

I nodded. "It's early days though. I need to get it confirmed at the hospital, and maybe have a scan. Apparently, I must have been pregnant when I had the fall, because Oliver and I haven't had any sex since I got back from the hospital."

She grabbed her handbag. "I meant to tell you!" She smiled. She ruffled through everything, until eventually pulling out an envelope. "I found a few photographs in my house! You gave them to me!"

She showed me a picture of myself, and I looked at in excitement. And then, upon looking I started to remember...

I remembered that denim jacket. I remembered all of those pretty rings on my fingers. Oliver had bought them for me. He bought a red one for me on valentines day, and a few silver ones that were to mark the make up after a huge argument... one for my birthday too. All from pandora. I loved pandora rings... I remembered this. Where were these rings now? I needed to find them...

And what happened that night, oh yeah! I remembered that. I thought I hated beer, but I liked that Budweiser. Alice had taken me out, Oliver and I were arguing in the house, and she'd taken me out to drink in a field. We lit a little fire together and smoked cigarettes, drank and talked all night. I even remember Alice driving me back home, at four in the morning, slightly intoxicated, and I felt uneasy because she told me she wasn't drunk, when I knew otherwise. I got back home so late, Oliver was so worried about where I had been.

I remember it all. Just from seeing that jacket and those rings, and the fucking beer. It came back to me, for the first time since the accident, I remembered something. "Alice!" I screamed. "I remember this night!"

"You do?!" She glanced at the photograph and then smiled. "I knew you'd start piecing everything together soon enough."

"Do you mind driving me to the hospital, to see if I can book an appointment about this damn pregnancy." I asked her.

"Are you worried?" Alice said.

I didn't say anything for a few seconds.

"How is everything between you and Oli? You think you're ready for this kind of thing?"

I huffed. "I think... I think this will give me a good reason to try and make things work again. I mean, we've talked a few times about it, and he seems more on board with it than I am. I've always wanted a baby. I just don't know... if i'm ready to settle down with the daddy just yet."

Alice smiled. "Well, i think you were arguing a lot before the accident. You stayed inside a lot, and you just weren't yourself. Maybe you knew you were pregnant, and you didn't know how to tell Oliver? Anyway, it doesn't matter, if you ever feel uncomfortable around him, give me a call and I'll pick you up, and bring you back to mine. He can be a bit much sometimes, I know."

Weird. How come things were off between me and Oli near the accident? If I knew I was pregnant, why didn't I tell him? What were we arguing about exactly? And why wasn't I seeing Alice as often? Hmm something sounded like it was up.
