A Life Worth Living

The First Time

After they cleared me to go home. Austin helped me get up and held my hand all the way to the car. It’s the same car he had when we first met but, there’s something different. There’s a carseat in the back. It was hand painted and looked like my style. I climbed into the back seat to take a closer look, the signature was my own. Brightly colored sparrows flew freely on opposite sides of an anchor. I closed my eyes as I felt the paint. I saw the car seat. We had just brought it home, Austin he got me paint for it. I was so excited that I ripped the box to pieces trying to get to it. Cardboard flew in the air and hit Austin but he didn’t seem to mind. I tore the plastic from it and began to cry. I heard Austin behind me as he wrapped his long and tattooed arms around me. He bent down to rest his chin on my shoulder. We stood there, rocking back and forth, for what seemed like forever. We were so excited to have a baby. What happened the night of my first accident?

“Charlotte..?” Austin asked cautiously. “Are you okay?”

“Yes, in fact I’m more than okay. I remember when we first brought home the car seat for her.” I paused, regretting what I had to say next. “ Austin.. I don’t even know her name..”

He looked down at our daughter and smiled. “It’s a surprise. I want you to think about girl names. But for now it’s a surprise.”

“Why does it have to be a surprise?”

“Because Charlotte, I want you to be excited.”

“Austin, I am excited!”

He chuckled at me and half smiled as he put our daughter in her precious car seat. He strapped her in and tickled her, making her squeal. I'll never understand how I got so lucky. I have a wonderful husband and a beautiful baby girl; when moments ago I thought I lost it all. I almost lost it all over something so pointless. But at the time it made my whole world come crashing down.

Austin had just gotten back from his band mate Aaron's house. They needed to practice some new songs. I went to the doctor earlier that day with our closest friend Alan. I was so nervous at the doctor's office that Alan had to hold my hand to comfort me. The doctor came in and told me the news. She also wanted to take an ultrasound to see how developed the baby was. Our baby was the size of a peanut. Tiny and precious. I was so happy that I couldn't stand it. I jumped out of the chair and danced into Alan’s arms. I remember hoping Austin would be as excited as I was.

“I know Austin will be so excited. I’m happy for you Charlotte.” Alan smiled as he embraced me.

“Thank you Alan. That means the world to me.”

The car ride home was a quiet one, but I couldn’t help but smile. Alan helped me think of a way to tell Austin. We finally decided on a candle light dinner and balloons that say “We’re having a baby” on them. We picked up the ingredients for his favorite dish chicken alfredo. We even picked up a bottle of wine for Austin and a carton of orange juice for myself. Alan was sweet enough to help me make dinner and helped set up. Alan cooked the chicken while I made the pasta and grated parmesan. We put on some music and sang along to Katy Perry. I looked at the clock as soon as it hit 5 o’clock I dashed up the stairs to get ready. I rummaged through our closet desperately looking a the “perfect” dress to wear. At last I found it. It’s nothing flashy, in fact it’s a bit plain. It’s a black dress that fell a few inches above my knees and past the scars from another lifetime, a white collar wrapped around my neck. Since the dress had no sleeves it showed off my tattoos rather nicely. An eagle sits towards the top of my arm and near my shoulder, a beautifully intricate mandala is below that, a heart that is inflamed in frills has a ribbon which once said hopeless but now reads hope. When I found Austin I found my hope. I was no longer lost and looking for a soul to connect with. I found that with him.

I went to the bathroom and ran a brush through my hair. I looked at my face then to my makeup bag and back again. I decided to at least put some makeup on and make myself presentable. I put on a small about of pale foundation, lightly applied eyeliner, and mascara. I dug out my mermaid green lipstick and traced my lips. By the time I finished it was already 6:30pm. I just sighed and went back downstairs. Alan set the table for me and even made a lovely salad. I checked my phone for messages. I had one new voicemail from Austin.

"Hey Charlotte, it's Austin. I'll be home in about half an hour or so. I have great news! See you soon. Love you, bye darling." Message received at 6:05 PM. Oh shit! He'll be home any minute!

"Alan! Austin is on his way home!" I shouted as I ran to find Alan. There he was with his ginger hair, just sitting on the couch. He made himself right at home, popped in a movie, and found a blanket to cover himself with. He turned to face me and smiled. He sighed as he got up and walked over to me and hugged me tight. He never said a single word. He let go of me, waved goodbye, and walked out the front door. I shook my head as I smiled to myself and picked up his little mess.
I sat in the spot in which Alan has just occupied and waited for Austin. I heard his car pull into the driveway. I quickly got up and waited to greet him by the front door. I was brimming with excitement. As soon as he walked through the door I wrapped my arms around him. I never wanted to let go. I always felt safe in his arms.

“Well hello there. Missed me much?” He teased.

“I always miss you when you’re gone!” I smiled so big that my cheeks began to hurt. “Close your eyes Austin!” I demanded as I lead him into our dining room. I dropped my hands from his tall shoulders and quickly ran next to the table.

“Okay open ‘em! Tada!!!” I jumped a few inches off the ground for emphasize.

He opened his eyes and smiled at me and said “Charlotte, this is so wonderful but what’s the occasion?”

“You’ll find out soon enough, I promise! Now sit I’m famished!”

“Yes, dear!” He mocked as he pulled my chair out for me.

“What is your good news?”

“Okay, are you ready for this?” He paused “We’re going on tour next month for almost a whole year!”

My heart dropped to the pits of my stomach. Nothing felt real anymore. Time slowed down and everything began to blur in front of me. Soon my breathing became the only sound I could hear. A small tear fell from my eyes. Suddenly, Austin was in front of me shaking me back into reality.

“What’s wrong? Charlotte, you’re freaking me out..”

My breathing became sharp. “Austin I’m pregnant…”

“What!?!?!?! We can’t handle a baby! I won’t even be home often enough. Seriously Charlotte? We’ve been so careful! We can’t do this. You can’t be pregnant!” He shouted as he backed away from me as if I were vial.

“You know, Austin, I can’t help it! This isn’t entirely my fault. Besides, I think we’ll be great parents! Don’t you want kids? I know we never talked about it much! But it’s always been in the back of my mind.” I said as I held a hand out to him.

“No. I don’t want to be a dad. Not right now, anyway…” He stared at my hand and walked away from and up the stairs to the bedrooms.

“Austin! This is your responsibility as much as it mine!” I screamed and burst into tears.

“No, Charlotte. This is on you.” He disappeared into the bedroom.

What? How could he say that to me? My head began to spin as I grabbed my keys from the counter and ran out the door and into the pouring rain. I got into my car and drove off into the night. I couldn’t see the roads much less and other cars but I didn’t care. I just had to get away. Maybe got to Alan’s house, he’ll understand. I reached for my phone to call him but as soon as I looked away I heard a car honk and a crunch of metal in front of me.

“Charlotte? You okay?” Austin asked. Suddenly, I was back in the car with him and our daughter. I peered behind me and she was there in her custom car seat, smiling up at me. I looked down and he was squeezing my small hands. What just happened?
