You're Not Alone Anymore

I loved days like these. The ones where it was super gloomy outside and you could just smell the rain that was about to come. I loved to curl up in the chair next to my window with a cup of tea in my hands and a blanket wrapped around me, looking at the empty streets below, pondering about many things.

And what things you may ask?

Life in general.

“Is it worth it anymore?” I thought to myself.
You see, I’ve been suffering from Major Depressive Disorder for almost five years now. It all began in my sophomore year of high school. These group of girls at school loved to pick on me and drag me down to my lowest point. There really wasn’t a reason, except for the fact I was the new kid. I was always the laughing stock of the school because of them. I only had one friend during my time there, and if it weren’t for him I don’t think I would be alive today.
I have been cooped up in my room the past few days, my depression has really been taking a toll on me lately.

Last week I found my boyfriend of 2 years in bed with another woman. I thought he really loved me, but I was obviously wrong. The questions kept going in circles in my head: ‘Am I really that worthless?’ ‘Am I really that unlovable?’ ‘Do I deserve to die?’
And every time I answered ‘yes’.

Which obviously didn’t help with my current ordeal. I just kept sinking deeper and deeper into a dark abyss. The marks on my wrists and thighs were proof enough.

That’s when I heard a knock on my door.
“What?” was all I managed to say. I was too tired due to my lack of sleep to get much more out.
“Honey, Austin’s here to see you. Is it okay if he comes up?” my mom said.
“Yeah, of course.” Austin was the only one who could make me feel any better.
A few minutes later he walked into my room and kneeled down next to my chair.
“Hey there pretty lady.” he said smiling up at me. I just kept staring out my window, taking a sip of my tea.
“Oh come on Dakota! What’s been going on with you lately? You’ve been up here all week. Did something happen with Josh?”
And that's when I lost it, I just started sobbing.
Austin took my mug and set it down on the table next to me and engulfed me into a big hug. He always did give the best hugs. It was just like being hugged by a bear.
“It isn’t fair!” was all I managed to stumble out between sobs.
“Shh, shh. Dakota what happened? You know you can tell me anything.” he said while rubbing my back while my head rested between his shoulder and neck.
“Well, I went over to Josh’s house last week to drop off a few things he had forgotten. When I walked inside he wasn’t there, so I figured he would be upstairs in his room.” I said, trying not to start crying again. “I could hear weird muffled noises coming from behind his bedroom door, and when I opened it, there he was in bed with some girl.”
“Oh Dakota darling, I’m so sorry. You of all people don’t deserve that. I knew he was scum from the moment I met him, I never liked him.” Austin said, anger clearly in his voice. “You deserve so much better, and I need you to realize that, okay?

And although I didn’t quite agree with him, I nodded my head anyways.
“Now get up!” he said, jumping up onto his feet and pulling me out of my comfy chair.
“Whyyyyy!?” I said groaning.
“Because you need to get out of this house, and because I said so!” he said sticking his tongue out at me. “Now go get ready and then pack a bag for the next few weeks.”
“What? Why? Austin, where are we going?”
“That my lady is a surprise!” he said, winking at me and then walking out of my room. “Just come downstairs with your things when you are ready.” he quickly said and then shut my door.
Well, I guess I need to get moving then, don’t I?
