Prologue

I’m not a typical teenage girl, I would say I’m incredibly different.

I was always different than others, no I’m not talking about the conversation you have with your parents and they assure you ‘you are unique because everyone is different’ because I was never quirky different, not even weird different. I was strange. And I knew it since the day I had the ‘heart attack’ all those years ago.

The day was as fresh in my mind as if it happened just hours ago, it was the day I was a medical mystery. To this day whatever had happened to me still stumped the doctors, still stumped my parents, it stumped everyone. My childhood was taken from me by numerous, month long stays at the hospital, before I knew it was on the brink of adult hood. The extensive and vigorous tests I had been put through to figure out how exactly I was still alive, according to science I should be dead, according to the logic of life I should be dead, yet I am still here.

I was only just 8 when this said ‘heart attack’ occurred, it was your typical day, slightly cloudy with a cool breeze but the sun was still out. While the other kids used their recess to play tag or other games I liked to sit and enjoy my lunch, and that I did. It was a peanut butter jelly sandwich I ate, to be exact, my normal lunch which would always go down with a sharp pain to let me know i was digesting it, but that always happened.

Until I couldn’t breathe, that never happened. Gasping for life I had managed to notify one of the teachers who knew that I suffered from an odd condition. All it took was 10 minutes before the ambulance arrived and I was whisked away and rushed to the hospital, the doctors in the back connected wires, jabbed, poked and prodded at me until I arrived. My parents were already in the ER when I was wheeled in, I couldn’t greet them as the doctors explained what had happened.

They said it was a heart attack, which I feared for my life at that age, my grandmother had passed just a mere few days after the doctors announced she had a heart attack. Naturally I panicked, which caused a spike in my heartrate, the excessive beeping in the background made me nervous until it suddenly stopped and flat lined. As the continuous beep signalled doctors that I was presumably 'dead' they stopped and rushed over to make sure I had been hooked up correctly to the machine. Sure enough I was.

I had no heartbeat, they said amazed, they checked my pulse and had done many tests to figure out if it was just a malfunction or I actually didn't have a heartbeat.

Turns out, I had no heart. My body rejected it and it disintegrated, apparently. I was a medical mystery, and to prevent the public eye knowing the hospital kept me on the down low, to make sure I wouldn’t endure mentally unstable pre-pubescent years, either way I still would’ve gone through hell and back.

Not long after I was diagnosed ‘without a heart’ my parents divorced, separating me from my brother, the divorce and diagnosis alienated me from my friends and had me taken out of public school to being home-schooled. Whatever disease I had seemed to mature as I did, it followed me like a lingering shadow through puberty and through high school, everything seemed to be going just fine, I had friends, I had a boyfriend and I enjoyed school but that was until a few months ago.

Our English class was using the computer lab to write up our essay’s, I barely touched the keyboard when it fizzled, spat and sparked an electrical fire causing the entire schools electronic mainframe to melt. Everyone had been stumped but I knew it was me who caused it, I had always been a curse around technology, no matter what I did. But this ‘incident’ occurred more than once, which eventually lead to my mom pulling me out of school and home schooling me herself.

Like I said, I’m different, I’m unique.

I’m a girl without a heart.

Notes
