Life Lessons Learned The Hard Way

The Danger In Starting A Fire

Kevin’s POV

Great, I thought irritated. I’ve been at this school for like 3 classes and I’m already lost as hell. I’m going to be so late. Wandering through the halls, I see a small crowd. Curious, I make my way to the front of mass of people. When I get there, I see some tall guy has a much smaller boy pressed against the lockers. The smaller person looks as though he’s about to piss himself. Suddenly, some other kid comes running up, but stops dead in his tracks when he sees the situation before him. Out of nowhere, this dude with black and blond skunk hair grabs him, hugging the boy to his chest, somewhat protectively. I’d call this instance a fight, but honestly, this puny kid has no chance of leaving victorious. I’m not sure what it’s about, but I catch the word slut. I’m assuming someone fucked somebody they shouldn’t have. It carries on for a little while, and then a guy with this crazy flaming red hair comes rushing up to the scene and yells, begging for the tall dude to stop.
“Austin, please let him go!” he shouted, trying desperately to be heard, “You’ve made your point and you’re just going to get in trouble! Please put him down.”
Suddenly, the dude with the skunk hair sets down the guy he’s been holding this whole time, and is quick to grab the shouting ginger. He passes him to the guy next to me who, in turn, hands him off to me. Hey look. I think, amused, I’m already helping out. The two guys go and grasp the guy I assume is Austin’s shoulders. Together they pry him off, and the little guy falls to the ground. He turns and rushes into the arms of someone on the floor, I’m guessing his lover. They get up and walk away quickly, careful not to pass Austin, who looks much calmer. I decide to go up to them, since I still have their precious package in my arms.
“Everyone go about your business, shows over.” the kid from earlier shouts, causing the grumbling crowd to dissipate. I gently set the ginger boy down.
“I believe this belongs to one of you guys.” I smirked.
The guy called Austin looked my direction and said, “Thanks. So, who are you?”
When I finally got a good look at him, I was shocked. He was so hot. I need to say something cool.
“The name’s Skaff. Kevin Skaff.” No! Why’d I say that?
He laughed. “The name’s Carlile. Austin Carlile.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh thank god.”
He cocked his head like a puppy, looking even more adorable. “What?”
“I wasn’t sure if that would be lame or not.” I replied awkwardly. Way to screw this up Skaff, I thought, mentally kicking myself. Luckily, he laughed.
“No worries. I love movies. Granted, James Bond isn’t as great as Star Wars, but you really can’t compare much to Star Wars.”
Honestly, I was having trouble concentrating. I take one look at his beautiful brown eyes and it leaves me kind of breathless. I now realize that while I’ve been thinking this, he’s been talking the whole time. I try to focus on his words.
“I’m sorry, what?” I stuttered.
He laughed again. “I asked where you are from.”
“M-Minnesota.” I stammered lamely, feeling my cheeks go hot.
“Makes sense. I can hear the northern touch in your voice. Where abouts?”
“Owatonna. It’s in Steele County, which is in, like, southern part of the state.” Why was I still talking oh my god. Shut up, shut up! I sighed and looked at him, hoping he wasn’t judging me too harshly.
“Awesome. Well, Welcome to Florida. Possibly the exact opposite of Minnesota.” He grinned and I couldn’t help but laugh. I was pleasantly surprised. I assumed he’d be a dick based off of the first impression I got. I’m glad he’s actually cool to talk to. Oh shit. He’s talking again.
“Sorry, didn’t catch that.” I replied, blushing furiously.
He laughed, causing my cheeks to go redder than that one boy’s hair.
“Hey, how about I introduce you to some people. Help you get more comfortable with this hellhole of a school.”
“That’d be awesome, thanks..” I replied.
I followed him to a group of people, recognizing almost all of them from the fight.
“This is Jack”, he started with the guy sporting the skunk hair. “He’s pretty much my best friend and a sex fiend.” He said laughing.
“C’mon Carlile. Don’t scare the new meat just yet.” He said in mock seriousness.
“I guess you could call him skank hair.” I joked to myself, blushing ferociously when everyone around me laughed, apparently hearing me. Even Jack laughed.
“Good one new meat. I like this guy already.” He said approvingly.
Austin continued. He pointed to the one who passed me the redhead. “This is Tino. He’s my other best friend.”
One by one he introduced his group to me. The ginger’s name is Alan. The boy who told the crowd to leave is Alex. I also met Aaron, who was pretty quiet.
“Nice to meet you guys. My name’s Kevin.”

I walked through my front door and into a pile of boxes.
“Goddamn it!” I shouted in pain.
‘Watch your mouth!“ came my momma’s response from somewhere in the labyrinth of still-packed belongings.
“Sorry momma. Didn’t see some boxes.”
“That’s no reason to speak like a heathen. No matter. Come into the kitchen and help your dear old mother with some boxes.” She called back.
Fighting my way through the sea of both sealed and empty cartons, I finally made it into the kitchen, where almost every cabinet and drawer was open. My incredibly short mother was sitting on the counter surrounded by kitchen utensils of all shapes, sizes, and uses.
“Hey baby can you bring in that box in the doorway there? There has to be bricks in it or something?”
I grabbed the massive box and set it on the counter next to her. Opening it, I realized why it was so heavy. It was a giant ass punch bowl set that weighed the same as a baby elephant.
“How was the first day darling?” my momma asked me tentatively. She was worried I’d hate it.
“It sucked at first, but it got better.” I answered truthfully.
“Did you make any new friends?” she asked.
“Yea actually, I made a few.” I replied.
“Any cute boys?” She asked slyly, a wicked smile appearing on her face. My mom was aware of my sexuality before I was. My coming outwasn’t very exciting. Damn her attentiveness.
“Yea, school’s full of them. But there’s one in particular who’s absolutely beautiful.”
“Oh that’s so great,” she squealed, “what’s his name?”
“Austin. He’s really tall, he likes Star Wars, and he’s so funny.” I replied.
“Well, so far, he sounds wonderful. I can’t wait to meet him.” she added with a wink.
“Alright sure.” I said sarcastically. “I’m going to go do my mound of homework.”
“Have fun sweetheart.” Momma said, going back to sorting utensils.
I took the stairs two at a time, finally reaching my bedroom. I was pretty much unpacked all the way down to my band shirts and posters. Jumping onto my bed, I grabbed my laptop and got comfortable. I pulled up my blog, yes, I keep a blog, like I could get any gayer. I posted a quick recap of my day and pulled out my homework. I got through Pre-Cal and chemistry, but when I got to World History I dozed off, my head filled with images of Austin and his deep brown eyes you could just drown in. As I drifted deeper into my slumber, my dreams consisted entirely of him.

Notes

Title cred to A Day To Remember. I’m really excited that we’ve finally introduced Kevin. I hope you guys are enjoying the story so far. Also sorry for not having updated. I've moved so it's been stressful and I also haven't had internet most of the time I've been down here. Also, i haven't been able to contact Alexis at all for some reason, so rather than going on a hiatus, I'm going to continue this story by myself for now.
