Eye Opener Contest

“Hey loser!” Taylor yelled at Hayden. No, Taylor wasn’t bullying Hayden, they were best friends. Their relationship consisted of joking insults and late night jam sessions. They’ve known each other forever, and it was all thanks to their parents. High School was a sucky place, but having Taylor by my side made it so much more fun.

“Hey, your house or mine tonight?” Taylor asked me.
“Yours, we went to mine last time, and my mom has to sleep for work.” I say. It was Friday, and that meant Movie Night, and things get a little crazy. We would stock up on plenty of snacks, well, mainly candy, and watch our favorite movies. It had gotten to a point that we could recite the dialogue like we were in the movies. It was the only thing I looked forward to at the end of the week.

As we carried on our conversation, I looked over at her. She was so excited to tell me about this guy that liked her, and she asked if I knew him. When she said she liked him back, I felt a pang in my chest. We were best friends, why did I care she liked him back? I knew the kid, he was Kyle Hanson. He was smart, hot, and was loved by everyone. He was basically all the things I’m not, so I knew why she would like him, who didn’t. Kyle liking Taylor wasn’t a surprise to me, he always had his eyes on her, and now he had made his move. If they did date, I know she wouldn’t have time for me anymore, and that’s what I was scared of the most.

“What movies are we watching now?” I ask Taylor as she rummages through the plie.
“Found it! And before you say no, we’re watching it.” She says. When she holds up the DVD case, I groan. We’re watching Snow White, again. We always watched this movie last, to end the night with a Disney movie. I actually didn’t mind watching it, only because it made her happy. As she put in the movie, she got back in her spot on the floor, next to me. The popcorn is long gone, and candy wrappers littered the floor. We probably wouldn’t make it through this movie, but we had seen it so much it wouldn’t matter. She snuggled into my chest and turned back to the screen. These were the times I cherished the most.

Taylor was starting to nod off, and so was I. I picked her up, careful not to wake her, and put her in my bed. I start to go to floor to sleep, to be a gentlemen, but her groggy voice stops me.
“Snuggle with me.” She yawns. I don’t know if she would remember this in the morning and get mad, but I got in anyway. I put my arm around her waist and pulled her into my chest. Her head was laying on my chest, and I could feel her breathing through my shirt. As I looked down at Taylor, her eyes shut and her breathing regulated, something occurred to me right then and there. I was hopelessly in love with my best friend, who I knew for sure didn’t love me back.
