What are you going to do about it?

It's all about rhythms.

After I exited the classroom, fear immediately smacked me in the face, Just like Jesse will later.. Great.

I opted on not going to the cafeteria to spend the last 5, or so, minutes, being verbally abused by anyone who decided they believed Jesse’s pathetic lies, so most of the students at this godforsaken school. And instead I decided to walk the halls would be a good idea. Hah.

“Micheal, why are you not in the canteen?” An older teacher, Mr. Butcher, scowled, glaring at me.
See, school had this stupid rule that during lunch nobody was allowed to leave the cafeteria, or ‘canteen’ as some of the older teachers called it. I don’t know why they have this rule, but as I said, its stupid.

I stayed silent and he sighed.

“Detention. Please report to Mr. Perry’s classroom once the bell goes.” He said, walking off. Atleast he didn’t force me to go back into the cafeteria, but why Mr. Perry’s room? Usually Mrs. Innes takes detention on Tuesdays… I shrugged it off, she was probably just ill or busy. Why do I even care? Yesterday, I was one of the most popular people in this fucking place, and now? Well, who knows where I stand now?

“Yes sir.” I mutter to myself, and begin the journey to my next class, Science, hoping to be allowed in even though I am pretty early.

And to my luck, Mrs. Royale let me in early, and continued with her work after I thanked her continuously.

I Pulled out my phone and earphones, and inserted them into my ears, turning on some music and layed my head down on the desk, hoping the rest of the day would go by quickly.

Just my luck, Jason, a boy in my 5th period, who was stuck next to me, happened to have seen the fight that had went on in the halls and was constantly throwing small pieces of paper onto my desk, just to inform myself that I was, in his words, ‘A worthless fag that deserves to die.’ And every time I’d crumple it up and shove it in my pocket, choosing to ignore them.

And that’s how I found myself ready to break down, but having to hold it in as I still had one class and then detention. Oh, how lucky I am.

“Class! Quieten down, please!” Mr. Perry yelled, hopping off of his desk and began to pace the isles of desks.

“If we had more time, I was going to suggest you work on your projects, but now, as you have wasted at least 10 minutes of the lesson, I would just like to hear your groups. When I call your name, please state who else you are working with. Does anyone not have a group at this moment?” Mr. Perry yelled, still pacing the desks.

I sheepishly raised my arm, afraid of being the only one, but fortunately for me, 4 other people raised their hands, all male.

“Alright then. Um.. Taylor Jardine, who is in your group?” And after that I zoned out, only being pulled from my messed up thoughts when I was approached by one of the boys who had previously raised their hand.

“Hi, I’m Josh.” He greeted, smiling a little.

“Mike” I said, returning the smile.

Josh nodded, taking in the information, before speaking again. “So, Mike, what instrument do you play?” He asked.

“Drums?” I said, although it sounded like a question. Josh nodded thoughtfully before grinning widely and motioning for me to follow him.

I did so and he lead me to a small group of guys, 3 of them, and introduced me.

“This is Max, Chris, and Matt.” Josh said, pointing to each of the boys as he said their names. “Guys, this is Mike. He’s gonna be our drummer.” Josh stated, in return making me give him a confused look. I agreed to be their drummer? When did that happen?

“Cool. Hey mike.” It was.. Chris, I believe, that said that.

“Hey.” I smiled.

“How come your aren’t with your friends?” Matt scoffed, looking over to the group behind us, presumably the one Justin was in.

“You didn’t hear about the fight?” I chuckled, I expected everyone to know about that already.

“No, what happened?” Max cut in.

“Jesse pinned me against some lockers and beat me.” I shrugged.

“Oh.. Well, we already have a song done if you want to hear..” Josh stated awkwardly, probably sensing my discomfort with the subject.

“Yeah.. that’d be great.” I smiled. “Wait.. Why did you guys raise your hands if you were already in a group?” I asked in confusion, eyebrows raised.

“We didn’t have a drummer, technically we didn’t have a full group.” Chris answered, pulling out his phone.

“This is a song we wrote, it has no name yet, but we recorded it, and edited the drums in. It’s just a basic rhythm, maybe you could add to it.” Chris added, pressing play.

It was a good song, pretty catchy as well, and they were right when they said it was a simply rhythm, the same beat throughout the entire song, and I already had an idea for it.

“Yeah, I got the drum line in my head right now.” I grinned, drumming, well music itself, always made me happy, no matter what the situation was.

“Great! Hang on a second.” Josh mirrored my grin, before running to the front of the class, presumably to ask if we could use the drum kit.

I guessed right when Josh came back, grinning even wider, and said that Mr. Perry said we could use the drums for a few minutes.

“Okay.. Can I use your phone so I can drum along?” I asked, pulling out my earphones.

“Sure..” Chris said, handing over his phone.

I quickly took a seat at the electric drum kit and turned it on, my grin never faltering.

I threw him a smile before plugging my earphones in and inserted one into my left ear, played the song through once, before restarting it and playing along instead.

It sounded pretty good so I handed him the phone back and he unplugged the earphones and played the song, willing me to drum along. And I did just that.

“Dude! That’s awesome!” Max yelled, grinning wildly.

“So, we got our song done?” Matt smiled, looking towards Josh.

“Yes we do. Guess we don’t have to fret about it anymore. Got it done in one lesson.” Josh replied. We all nodded, grinning like maniacs.

The rest of the period flew by and currently I was sitting on my desk, waiting for Mr. Perry to return.

After a few minutes, the door flew open and a very flustered Mr. Perry walked in, paying no attention to me.

I cleared my throat, trying to gain his attention, but that didn’t work too well.

“Uh.. Mr. Perry?” I questioned, my voice coming out small.

Instantly Mr. Perry spun around, and groaned.

“Mike, You’re dismissed, go home.” He groaned, looking pissed.

“I uh.. got detention.. and was told to report here..” I stated awkwardly.

“I don’t care. Go home.” He seemed pretty stressed.

“Oh.. Okay.. See you tomorrow sir..” I trailed off, picking up my bag.

I was almost out the door when Mr. Perry spoke once again.

“Mike you dropped someth-“ He stopped mid-sentence.

I spun around to see why, and found Mr. Perry staring at a piece of paper, eyes wide, mouth agape.
SHIT. THAT’S THE NOTE JASON THREW AT ME.

“Mike, who gave you this?” He asked sternly.

“Uh.. That doesn’t matter.” I spoke, snatching the note and began running out of the class.

Once I arrived home, I noticed the driveway was empty. Guess its just me home tonight. Brilliant.

I opened the car door and slammed it shut, walking up the small path and fished my key from my pocket, before jamming it into the keyhole, and pushing the door open swiftly, and dumping my backpack and shoes by the door, before bolting up the stairs and into my bedroom. Luckily enough I had my very own drum kit in there, Fuck yeah!

I sat on the stool behind the kit and picked up the sticks.

And guess what never left my head the entire time?

Mr. Tony Perry.
