Leaving the cave, going into the unknown

Chapter 49

It’s been a month since I had Dee and although I was extremely tired all the time I didn’t have much to complain about. Alan was a wonderful Dad, he helped with everything without having to be asked and when she would cry in the middle of the night he would be the first one to jump up and get her. When I would try and get her he would tell me that I should rest and that he would leave for tour in 7 months so I should enjoy not having to do much for now. I had almost forgotten about the next tour, it was going to be strange doing everything myself. Of course I wouldn’t be alone I had Val, Kate and Alan’s parents for help if I really needed it but It wasn’t the same.

I contacted my parents about Dee’s birth only to get the usual response of a turn down; they didn’t want to meet her. I wasn’t surprised but I was still upset, how could anyone not like a cute defenseless baby. For what they lacked in Grandparent hood Alan’s parents made up for, they where here at least once a week and would take cause of her if we needed a nap. Alan’s mom and I had really hit it off, she knew about my relationship with my parents and told me to think of her as a mother. It was nice to have someone care about me unconditionally like that.

Alan and I hadn’t had a night out to ourselves since before his last tour; we were fine with it. We both agreed that our perfect idea of a date night was curling up on the couch with Dee and some popcorn to watch movies until we all feel asleep. Unfortunately our friends did not seem to agree, saying that we needed to go out just the two of us. Austin and Val were very pushy on this matter, but really I think it was because they wanted some alone time with Dee. She had taken quite the liking to Austin, whenever he would come over she would make grabby hands towards him. Sophie had also taken very well to a new members presence, she had become sort of protective of Dee. They had many cuddle sessions and Sophie was very patient with how grabby Dee could be.

Eventually Alan and I gave into Austin and Val’s request of a nice dinner with just the two of us. It was Friday night and I put on a longer maxi dress, still a little uncomfortable with my body after giving birth. I fixed my makeup and hair before slipping on my Vans and grabbing a bag.

“You look beautiful Alex.” I jumped a little and turned to see Alan standing at the door. He had on a pair of black skinny jeans and a button up shit with Vans; he looked cute as ever.

“You don’t look so bad yourself. Are you sure we should be doing this? I know that Austin and Val will take good care of her but what if something happens or if she needs us? I don’t know if I’m ready to leave her yet.” I stood there with a worried expression on my face; Alan just came over to me and took me in his arms.

“If there where ever two people in the world I would in trust my daughter to it would be Austin and Val. And if something happens then they call us and we’ll be right back. I know it’s hard to leave her even if it’s only for a couple of hours but we’ll be back soon. If you’re like this now I’m afraid to see what’ll happen when she has to start kindergarten,” My eyes widened at the thought

“What happened to ‘Don’t even talk about that Alex I don’t want to think about her growing up yet’?” I shot him an all-knowing look to which he rolled his eyes and squeezed me tighter.

“One night away isn’t going to kill us, all will be well don’t worry. Now lets go downstairs and wait for them.” He took my hand and first led me into Dee’s room only to see her now up and lying in her crib. When she saw us she gained a little grin on her face, my favorite thing to see in the world. I picked her up and cuddled her until we reached downstairs; we sat on the couch for about 5 minutes before we heard the doorbell ring. Alan went to get the door while I looked down at my beautiful little girl; I wanted to spend time with Alan but I also wanted her to be there with us.

“Hey Alex you look pretty tonight! And there’s my favorite little girl!” Austin walked into the living room and as soon as she heard his voice Dee started making grabby hands at him and squirming around. I passed her off to him and she cuddled and cooed into his chest, I felt at ease like I knew she would be fine.

“Alright Alex lets go.” Alan said from the doorway, I looked around and saw something missing.

“Wait Austin where’s Val?”

“She wasn’t feeling well so I told her to stay at home, can’t get Dee sick. I hope it’s okay that it’s just me and her tonight?” He said with the largest puppy dog eyes I’ve ever seen on him.

“Ya it’s fine, just be good both of you.” I kissed her head then let Alan lead me out the door and into the car.

“Alright dinner time.” Alan shouted, jazz hands and all. I started laughing as we drove away from our house. We where headed out to our favorite restaurant in town that served the best pasta I’ve ever had. I felt a hand on my leg and looked over at Alan, who briefly looked at me for a moment before turning his eyes back to the road. The next thing I knew I only saw black and I felt so tired I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I pried them open long enough to look beside me and see Alan covered in blood, passed out.
