Leaving the cave, going into the unknown

Chapter 40

It’s been a month since Alan left and I was very slowly going crazy, or at least that’s what it felt like. I haven’t gotten to the point were I’m twitching and thinking the walls are coming down on me but I think I’m getting close.

Val has been very busy at work so I haven’t seen much of her. So far during my month I’ve finished all the projects Tom gave to me, written thank you cards for all the gifts we’ve received and finished two painting. I’ve set up a tiny painting area in Dee’s room, when I’m in there I feel so at calm and not stir crazy and Dee doesn’t move around that much like she knows its her room and she feels calm. The first painting I did was of the tree I was going to do originally on her wall just on a small scale, the second one I did was an extension of the tree with music notes and her name hanging off the branches. I hadn’t figured out the last one but I sure as hell had lots of time to get that sorted out.

I decided on making Val dinner knowing that she was going to be very tired, she had been making me dinner every night and I thought it was about time she had a break. I got up from my semi permanent lying down position and made my way downstairs. I got to the kitchen and started on some pasta, simple and won’t take too long as she should be home in 10 minutes.

I heard the phone ring remembering that it was upstairs; I put the burner on low and went back up the stairs. By the time that I got to the top I was feeling winded, not exercising or moving this much was really taking a toll on my body. I reached my phone just in time for the voice mail to not pick up I answered it without looking.

“Hello?” I said clearly out of breath, sounding like I had just run a mile.

“Alex? It’s me are you okay; you sound like you’ve just been working out? Have you been doing too much activity? Why isn’t Val stopping you...” The questions went on and on just like this before I had the chance to but in and stop him.

“Alan stop, I’m fine I just went up the stairs and not doing anything for a month has put a toll on my physical ability. What’s up?” I started the journey back downstairs taking my time; going down was always easier than going up anyway.

“I just wanted to check in and see what’s going on with you and that you’re both okay. I also wanted to let you know that were going to be home a little early, something happened with the last week of the tour. Were not skipping them were just only playing a select few then coming home, they’ve had really bad weather so it’s not safe with all the aftermath stuff going on.”

“That’s great! I’ve started to go so crazy just being here by myself all day, I think the walls are going to start talking to me.” I put the tomato sauce in a separate pot as I heard the door open; Val came into the kitchen and was shocked to see me there.

“What are you doing up?” She screamed at me, more shock than angry.

“Why is she yelling at you to sit down? Are you over doing yourself…” Both Val and Alan were questioning me. I felt the pressure build up and needed to sit down before I passed out, I put the phone down and slumped to the ground. Val stopped after she saw my reaction and came to sit next to me taking the phone from where I had placed it on the ground, Alan still asking questions.

“Alan stop for a minute Alex had to sit down.” She put the phone on speaker.

“Are you okay?” She asked putting the phone down between us and rubbing my back while I tried to focus on my breathing.

“Ya just both you guys were yelling at once and I got clouded for a moment I’m fine now I think I just need to go back to bed.” I went to get up but sat right back down, movement wasn’t really an option.

“On second thought the ground is just fine.” I slumped back.

“What’s going on?” A very confused Alan asked threw the phone.

“She can’t get up without getting dizzy so she’s just sitting on the floor. I’m sorry Alex I don’t think I could carry you and I don’t think you should be getting up any time soon.” She said with a look of sadness knowing there was nothing she could do to help me, all Val ever wanted to do was help people.

“Call Tom.” Alan said without hesitation and Val did just that, after a quick conversation Val said he was on his way.

“I’m sorry I stressed you out, that was the last thing I wanted to do. Just rest okay don’t do anything for a couple of days and know I’ll be home in 3 weeks.” Alan said.

“Okay, Tom just got here so I’ll talk to you later. I love you.” I said into the phone.

“I love you too.” I hung up and looked at Tom with a glum expression.

“Over did yourself, didn’t you?” He crossed his arms with a fatherly expression as if to say ‘I told you not to do that’. I ducked and nodded my head in shame before I felt him lift me up and carry me into my room. He tucked me in and turned out the light.

“Sleep for a bit and I’ll wake you up when dinners ready, the one you made got a little burned but don’t stress okay?” I nodded before drifting off. I defiantly knew what my limits were now, and they were very slim.
