Leaving the cave, going into the unknown

Chapter 36

Alan and I spent the day shopping for food and watching movies on the couch. It was relaxing and just what I needed for what had been going on lately. The first night however was slightly rough for me; I woke up at least 3 times with nightmares. I thought that they’d go away when Alan got back but apparently I was wrong. They were always about the same thing, Jason would be coming after my little girl and there was nothing that I could do about it. I would be trapped inside a room of windows and I could see him taking her but I had no way to reach her. He would look at me and grin knowing there was nothing I could do about it and this was his way of getting back at me. I would scream and hit my fists against the glass until my hands would bleed but there was nothing I could do. By then Alan would wake me up and coo me back to sleep by telling me that I was safe and there was nothing Jason could do to hurt us anymore. Even knowing this I still felt like something was going to happen again, I don’t think I’ll ever feel totally safe.

The next morning I slept in til 12pm due to my restless night, the baby included but when she finally got up at 12 I felt her moving around telling me it was time for us all to get up. I wanted to let Alan sleep more because it wasn’t fair that he had to suffer after the sleepless night I made him have. I got up and made myself some breakfast, I took my decaf tea to the porch and just looked at the lake, staring at it. It was so peaceful and at ease like nothing could harm it. No one else seemed to be on the lake so I went down to the dock and dipped my feet in the water, it was slightly cold but more refreshing than anything.

“One day when you’re big enough I’m going to bring you here and you, me and your daddy are going to go swimming. We’ll play board games and read you lots of stories; we’ll explore the woods and meet little bunnies frolicking in the forest. No one will hurt you, I won’t let them.” I said to my tummy, I’m sure from behind I looked a little strange but I didn’t care. I heard a branch snap from behind me and saw Alan with a cup of coffee in his hands come to the dock.

“I won’t let anyone hurt her either, and I won’t let anyone hurt you. I know that right now it’s scary and things seem like they won’t get easier but they will.” He said while sitting next to me, he put his coffee down and moved his arm to my shoulder and the other hand to my tummy to rub circles. I felt the baby kick like she recognized his hand, daddy’s girl already.

“I think I know that deep down but right now all I keep seeing is Jason and him taking her from me. If you wouldn’t of called the officer than who knows he may have taken her from us before we even got to meet her.” He just put his head on my shoulder and rubbed circles.

“You know, we can’t keep calling her our little girl for much longer we need a name.”

“Well do you have any suggestions?” I asked, looking him in the eye. He thought about it for a moment before answering.

“I like Melody. Melody Case-Ashby, what do you think?” Alan and I had already discussed putting my last name hyphenated his for her last name.

“I love that name, we could nickname her Dee, Little chick-a-Dee. Ya that’s it that’s the name” He smiled at my response, I loved the name and now I couldn’t wait to meet my little Dee.

The rest of the week was spent relaxing and swimming with Alan, we finished the baby room planning and I finished my rough sketches for the mural I was going to do. I was going to do a large tree where the branches hang over her bed and hanging from the branches was going to be musical notes because of her name, there was going to be a branch with her name on it too. We also decided to not tell anyone the name until after she was born, it would be our little secret. We got up and hopped in the car heading home, as much as I loved the cabin I was ready to get back to normal. I had a back up of projects and new bands to work with; my brain was racing with new ideas that I couldn’t wait to get down on paper. Alan had to stop me from working all week whenever I would try and draw something he would take my pencil, so I waited until he went to sleep each night to just rough out what I was thinking.

“I’m gonna miss this place.” I whispered as we drove away, the cabin only a small dot in our rearview mirror.

“We’ll be back one day, but we’ll have Dee with us.” He said as he took my hand.
I smiled at the thought of what our baby would look like with a little bathing suit on splashing in the water.

We went straight to Tom’s house where Kate was now staying until further notice, as she was too afraid to go to her house. It made sense anyway seeing as they were getting married; it was weird to think that Kate and I were growing up so much. A year ago we were totally different people and now I have a baby on the way and she’s getting married.

“Kate!” I screamed as I walked through the door running around the house til I found her in the kitchen. She looked much better and was sat at the table eating some cereal.

“Alex stop running like that, well you’re not really running it’s turned into more of a fast waddle. Ha you’re like a little penguin all cute!!” I shot her a glare while I poured myself some cereal and sat beside her.

“Well someone must be feeling better if they’re already making fun of me.” I shot back, all of her bruising had gone down greatly and the cuts had turned to scabs.

“Ya I am, Toms been taking great care of me making sure that I do nothing but sit around all day. It’s been the best and the worst week of my life. Is this what he did to you when you were here? Force you to be dormant?” I laughed; it basically was what Tom had forced me to do.

“Hey I can hear you talking about me, don’t be mean I just want to make sure you get better fast.” Tom came from the living room and gave Kate a kiss on the head; Alan followed behind him and sat next to me stealing some flakes of my dye cereal.

“If you think Kate’s complaining is bad, Alex bitched for 2 hours because I wouldn’t let her do a cannon ball off the dock.” I pouted at him, I had forgotten about that until now.

“Oh ya, Kate kept me up until 2am ranting about how women don’t need men anymore. How they can create their own babies via test tube and that men don’t really serve much purpose. All because I didn’t want her to walk up the stairs with her crutches incase she fell and hurt her ankle more so I carried her.” Tom complained as I laughed because I could see Kate talking for an hour or more about that subject then do a 360 and cuddle up to Tom while she slept. It was the moments like these where we were all laughing around the table that reminded me that there were good people in the world, you just have to search a little for them.
