Leaving the cave, going into the unknown

It was day 5 of ‘keep Alex locked in the house and away from the world’ and I was starting to go a little stir crazy. I had read 3 books and finished all of my work assignments; I had also planned out the rest of baby’s room and put everything on hold at the store just waiting to be picked up whenever I could. As much as I understood how important my safety was I was going crazy, luckily I had a doctor’s appointment today that I couldn’t miss. Tom and the officer had to accompany me so I got up and showered and dressed. I went downstairs and prepared a large breakfast for everyone, Tom, the officer and myself. The officer’s name was Rick; he was there every day and there was a different officer who I hadn’t met that came at night.

“Hey Alex, I see you’ve made some food! I have to say that even under the circumstances having you here has been amazing, I haven’t had to make myself food since.” Tom said as he came down the stairs, I had been cooking a lot due to the fact that there was nothing else to do.

“Ya well these are for you and Rick I’ve eaten my breakfast all ready, now eat up because we have to go to my appointment.” I said as I went to go get Rick, he came inside and they sat down at the table. I heard my laptop make a noise signaling there was a Skype call coming in, it was Alan.

“Hey Alan.” I said as I accepted the call.

“Hey Alex, how are you feeling today?” He asked, he said the same thing every time he talked to me.

“Were all good here, just getting ready for my appointment, we find out if it’s a girl or a boy today.” I was really excited to find out the sex, it meant that I could finally finish the baby’s room.

“Yup only 4 more months til we meet the little one and only 3 days til I get to see you again. You have no clue how badly I want to be home right now, I’m getting really tour lagged.” He looked as exhausted as he sounded.

“I think I know how you feel, I just want you to be home and not have to deal with any of this bullshit right now. This is supposed to be a happy time in our lives not filled with worry about some asshole.”

“Hey stop ok? That isn’t for you to worry about it’s for the police to deal with, you just relax and sit tight until I get there. When I get back we’ll go home and finish the baby’s room. Then my mom wants to throw us a baby shower so we can help her with some stuff. It’ll be fun soon I promise you, I won’t let this guy wreck what’s supposed to be the most amazing time, minus the morning sickness and the labour part.” He smiled awkwardly.

“Well the morning sickness stopped so it’s not that bad right now, don’t even remind me about the labour part. I don’t even want to think about that right now, too much stuff to deal with.” We laughed together, like nothing was wrong or bothering us. Soon enough though Tom told me we had to leave in order to make it on time, so I said a sad goodbye.

We headed down with the cop car following us, when we arrived I signed in and looked around the office. I had been here a couple of times since I found out about my pregnancy and it was crazy to see how my reaction of my surroundings had changed. I couldn’t even look at the other mothers before but I was now showing and I looked like I belonged here. I was called back and Tom came with me while Rick waited behind, I put the gown on and sat on the table.

“Alex good to see you again. So I hear you’ve been under quite a lot of stress lately and I have to press that stress is not good so please just try and relax as much as possible.” I nodded before she set up the monitor and put the jell on my stomach and turned on the machine. Eventually she found my baby, looking as precious and wonderful as ever. I could see it’s fingers and toes starting to form, it kind of looked like a baby Alien but it was my little Alien. I never thought I could be so in love with something that wasn’t in my hands or tangible at the moment. It still didn’t feel real, I felt like I was being lied to and that there was no way that something that amazing was growing inside of me.

“Would you like to know the sex because I can see it?” I nodded like crazy.

“Well you’re having a little girl from what I can see, 99.9% sure. Congratulations!” A little girl, I have never been so excited in my life. I secretly wanted it to be a girl that I could dress like me and show the world to. I knew that Alan would be over the moon that we were having a little girl. I knew that he wanted a girl even if he told the guys he wanted a boy, I knew that she was going to be a daddy’s girl the way Alan would treat her. I got a copy of the pictures and left with Tom and Rick in tow, a cloud of excitement hovering around me nothing could pull me down.

Until Rick got a call saying they found Kate and she was in the hospital, we drove over immediately. When we arrived and went to her room she looked pretty beat up and bruised.

“Alex! You’re alright, I was so worried.” She said as I went over and hugged her.

“You worried? I was worried thinking you were dead, what happened?” I asked.

“It’s a long story, how much time do you have?”
