Shattered

You Keep Trying to Resolve the Past Right Now

Austin’s POV

After Jack hung up from the call, I woke up the rest of the group, telling them the news. All looked shocked.

“That’s right! Jack and Alex live in Utah and told me that a while ago. How could I forget?” Aaron mumbled to himself. I threw on a fresh set of clothes before heading out the door to meet up with the rest of the group. In ten minutes, we had checked out and started the trucks. It’s not like we had much to stuff to back anyways!

“Hold up a second!” Alan cried as we prepared to back out. He directed us to drive to the train station, holding his phone out in front of me. It had the schedule of the train that Jack had named.

“She’ll be in Moab by Saturday! We’re just twenty miles south of that, so we can head up there and catch the train in the morning!” Alan cried out in delight. Looks like things were finally turning out in our favor. Our little two truck parade drove the ten minutes to Moab before settling down at the train station. Ronnie and Tino scouted it out while the rest of us whiled away the time. Our waiting game had begun again.

I couldn’t believe that she was alive! Jack and Alex hadn’t revealed much, but just let us know she was alive and heading off to catch the train. The drive to Price was too long and we would probably just not catch her. There was a stop between Price and Moab, but we could wait here.

Time Skip-Next morning at ten thirty.

“The train will be here soon. Calm yourself.” Alan stared me down. I dropped my hands that had been preoccupied twirling the chain around my neck. Aaron chuckled from the backseat.

“We’ll all have to go and check each car. It says on the site that it’s a twenty car line.” Aaron groaned, staring up from his phone. We only had a limited time to try to avoid detection and find the missing girl.

“Okay, we’ll make just a quick skim of each car.” Ronnie suggested. I nodded, knowing the process had to go quick. When the train rolled up to the station, we all leapt out of our car and ducked into cover. The workers got off and went into the big building for lunch and to start working.

“Let’s go.” Phil hissed. Nodding, we all rushed out to the cars. The door slid open on creaking hinges. We would have to be a lot more careful than first thought. As I looked around, everyone shook their heads in frustration.

Ronnie, Phil, and I went to the last three cars. They were locked shut. I sighed in frustration. The cars were labeled #234, #233, and #232. They all had graffiti on them and one even had a cross.

“Here, let me try something.” Phil offered and produced a long metal pick. I had no clue where he had acquired it. Within a minute, the door was unlocked and slid open. He did this for the other. We all sighed in frustration as the first to cars were completely filled with boxes. Only the one with the colorful cross on it wasn’t filled to the brim.

I hopped inside the dim room. It was dark and dusty. I don’t know how someone could live in here. I glanced around until I saw Alan signal me out. Someone must be coming down to this far end of the train.

As I turned to exit, I spotted something in the corner. It was Kynder’s blue first aid kit, tucked by some crates. Alan hissed for me to hurry up, so I swiftly grabbed the box and closed the car back into darkness.

Once we all regrouped at the cars, we watched the train quickly pull out of the station. I couldn’t help but smile, although the other looked frustrated.

“We didn’t find her. Where could she be?” Tino growled and shook his head. I held up the small box and Alan’s jaw dropped.

“Where was she?” He stuttered in amazement. I shrugged, but knew that this little blue box was a good sign.

“She wasn’t in sight, but Kyn is still on that train. If I know her, she won’t ever leave without erasing all evidence.” I cradled the only piece of her I had left.

“So now we go to Denver. Let’s just meet her up at her final destination.” Phil and Tino both suggested. Alan nodded and gave me the thumbs up. I could always count on my best friend to back me up! Thinking for a moment of the others, I had to shake my head.

“I know I’ve pulled you guys around behind me for the past week. Alan and I are taking his truck to Denver. Ronnie, I know you have to attend to other clients. Tino, Phil, Aaron, you can do whatever you want, leaving to go back to the house if you so choose.” I held up my open palms, a signal to let them go if they wanted.

“I’m going with you guys. It’s about time to get out of the house.” Aaron grinned. Tino and Phil went to their truck.

“We need to go back and check on the place. We’ll drive Ronnie back for his car. Call us when you catch up to Kynder and we’ll drive out to meet you.” Tino and Phil saluted before starting their car. Ronnie hopped in the back. The three of us waved as we watched them go, dust kicked up under the four tires.

“Off to Denver.” Aaron grinned.

“Road trip!” Alan screamed in delight as he jumped into the backseat. The car started up and carried us out east, towards Colorado and Kynder.
