three

The taxi pulled up into a three story house surrounded by five tour buses in Huntington Beach. I don’t know whose house we’re at, but all I can say, load the buses up cause I want this tour over with. The taxi driver opens the trunk and Devin goes to retrieve our bags. Zach pays the driver three hundred dollars. I guess driving nine hours from L.A to Huntington with three annoying guys isn’t something you can let slip by.

Andy and I step out the taxi. There were a lot of people here going in and out of buses.

I smile when I read one of the tour buses that says Mandalay in fancy cursive scripture. I smile even more when I read another one of the buses that has The Word Alive on the side. At least it’s someone else I know versus it just being me and Of Mice and Men. I hate that on every tour,
I have to pretend that Belle doesn’t exist. It’s not fair to me, to her, or to Andy. To make it worse, I can’t even tell my friends on tour, including Tyler from TWA. He’s nice and I’m pretty sure he’s understanding, just, how much understanding?

I walk towards the front yard when a really tall guy who, was talking to my band, comes up to me. He’s very tall I’ll give him that. With a slight five o’clock shadow, tattoos on his neck, covering his entire arm, some of his left arm, and on his chest that line up with the thick pink scar running down is chest, and with the words Live tattooed on his right and Love on his left hand. He has this huge smile plastered on his face and it took all my might not to smile back.

“Hi. I’m Austin. I yell really loud for a band called Of Mice and Men.”He pulls me into a hug and I awkwardly hug back. I really hope Of Mice and Men aren’t one of those hugging types of bands. I squirm from his grip and smooth my pants out. “Your band is pretty rad.” He says before pushing me in the direction of the house.

Great. They’re also one of those bands who don’t take no for an answer.

As we walk into the house, people rush past us with equipment, guitars, and suitcases.

“This is the inside of my house. I’ll get the guys.” Whoa. This place is his house. This place is huge! It has like three stories and I’m pretty sure they have a built in studio in one of these rooms. “Hey guys! Get down here!” Oh, more people who don’t take no for an answer.

The rest of the band comes down one at a time. The first to come down was a short fellow. He had dirty blonde hair and was a stout kind of man. He gave me a smile before the next person, a tan man with shoulder length dark brown hair, came down. After him was a pale stout man with dark brown hair pulled into a tiny pony tail.

The last guy to come down made my breath hitch in my throat.

He came down the stairs fixing his ginger red hair. Tattoos covered parts on his arms, a face tattoo on his neck and on his knuckles was the word Rock. When his eyes met mine, I felt as if the house was burning up with such intense fire, the heat itself would singe off your eyes-brows. His brown eyes stared through me as if judging me. They weren’t the exact kind eyes you normally get when you first meet a person. Instead of melting chocolate like Austin’s, they were a frozen deep brown.

I found myself just staring at him. It’s as if some force had me attracted to him.

“Uh, Gwen?” I blink my eyes and look around. They were all staring at me and I had been lost in my on world. I gulped and rub my hands down my pants.

“Uh, yes?” Austin looked at me before clearing his throat and speaking again. In order, he introduced the rest of his band as Aaron (who plays bass), Phil (who’s lead guitar), Tino (drums), and Alan (rhythm guitar).

“Guys, this is Gwen. She’s the vocals for Mandalay, the band that’s headlining us.” with that said, Alan scoffed at me.

“Great, another girl.” And he stomped away from his spot on the stairwell. He brushed past me with such force, I went toppling into Austin. He caught me with open arms by the armpits and glared at the ginger. I don’t know why, but this made my heart sink with such pressure, I felt as if it was going to pop. Usually everyone I meet likes me. I sigh and run my fingers through my hair.

“Thanks for introducing me. but I should really get to my band. Nice meeting you all.” I wave at them before scurrying off to my band.

“GWENTH!” a black blob of back hair impaired my vision before I felt myself being lift off the ground and twirled around in circles. I laugh and set my hands on his shoulders.

“Hi Adele.” As soon as I was set down, I was picked back up again and spun around once more. “Hey Brendon, Lucas, David.” Once I was set down again, I tackled them in a hug. They make me feel so normal, like a teenager again.

“God! We miss you so much! We haven’t seen you since Warped! How’s Belle?” Adele asked.

“I miss you all too!” I hugged them once more. “Belle’s doing great! Still not talking, but doing good.” They all nodded. “I see a new tattoo.” I point to his chest. He smiled and pulled his tank top down further for me to see. In the middle of his chest is a diamond with little lines to make it seem as if it’s shining.

“And we’re getting you a tattoo next.” I shake my head. How would people view not only a 23 with a child, but a 23 that has tattoos and a child?

“I mean, come on! We’re touring with The Word Alive whose recent album is still going gold, Of Mice and Men who just finished their album, and two bands who just released an album, there’s us, who are working on an album. This is three perfect chances to collab with someone!” Lucas exclaims. Everyone nods and agrees.

“BUS CALL!” someone yells. We all squeal and grab our bags. Maybe, on this tour, I can relax a little and focus on the music.

Wait, who am I kidding? It’s impossible for me to relax when Belle is on my mind every second of the day.

I drag my rolling suitcase down the familiar hallway of our tour bus. I claim top bunk, as usual, and set my bag in the middle bunk that will now be known as the junk bunk. Adele takes the top bunk across from me and Lucas takes the one below him. Leaving Brendon and David with the bottom bunks. I look at the window as our bus pulls out of Austin’s driveway.

Hey, we’re behind you.

I look backwards again and see the bus of I See Stars behind us, along with the equipment bus. After rolling down the street, and watching various fans scream and hold up signs, the buses kick up speed a little. As we hit the highway, The Word Alive was next to us with Dayshell and Of Mice and Men behind us. With Alan behind us.

Indeed you are Mr. Oliver

“This tour is going to change our lives, well mainly your life.” Brendon calls from his bunk.

“Totally. This tour is going to be the best because this is the start of the Started From The Bottom Now We’re Here Tour!”
