For What It's Worth..

-Responsibilities and Friends.-

It’s been three weeks since Jen moved out of my place, and I have too admit, it was getting pretty lonely around here without her. Even with her quiet presence, my house seemed emptier, a hush fell where she would normally sit abnormally still. Yet I never felt alone like this.

I decided I would take a drive downtown, and see if she was working at the bookstore today. I grabbed my Misfit shirt and car keys and walked out too my car. I heard my phone chime.

Jen: How are you this fine afternoon? :)

I quickly replied. I am doing quite well, I’m headed out for a drive. Hbu? Getting in the car, I put my phone in my CD holder, turned on the car and headed out. She’s in for a surprise. Her texting me was pretty convenient. It took me little to no time at all to get downtown, but having to park a few streets over wasn't my first choice. Stepping out, I saw Jen’s car Baby. I grinned. Remembering how long it took me to coax the name out of her. Her whole face was red by the end of it. She looked so damn adorable. Well, at least I know she’s at work. I thought. I grabbed my sunglasses from the top of my head and put them on.

I went into a little cafe before I headed to her work, and bought her some bubble milk tea, and myself a hot chai tea. Walking out of the store, I noticed two girls waiting outside. As soon as they saw me, they charged over too me. “Oh my god, Chris Motionless!” one of them squealed. “Hey.” One of them held out a marker and a poster. “Can I have your autograph, please?”

I smiled and nodded. I set down the drinks in the window and took the poster and marker. They told me their names where Haley and Rikki, and how big of fans they were. “Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.” Giving them the poster and their marker, they hugged each other, giggling uncontrollably and ran off with a hasty ‘Thank you.’ Pushing my hair out of my face, I let out a breathy laugh. I grabbed the drinks and headed towards the bookstore, the front door was open to let some air in, and I could hear Imagine Dragons Radioactive playing through the store. Walking inside, I noticed she wasn't in her usual spot at the cash. I saw a few people browsing the isles. I set the drinks down on the counter, and put my elbows on the edge, glancing around; taking in my surroundings.

The store had a musty air freshener smell about it, a smell I had learned to appreciate whenever I came here. “Is this everything?” I snapped my head up when I heard someone's voice. I saw Jen walking up one the isles with books piled high in her arms. Behind her a woman with overpriced clothes, and jewelry hanging all over head. I could practically smell the hairspray she must have drowned herself in. I quickly picked up the drinks and moved behind the counter. Just as Jen set down the tower of books right where I was standing. She started towards the cash, stopping for a millisecond when she saw me standing there holding two drinks. I gave her my best Cheshire cat grin.

Smiling, she said. “So, that’s why you didn't answer my text I sent earlier.” Moving herself too the front of the cash register. “No idea what you’re talking about.” still grinning.
She gave a short laugh. Turning toward the lady in front of her, she rang up the books for her. I let my sight become completely entranced by her. She was wearing black skin tight jeans that showed off her curvy hips, and made her ass seemingly more grabbable..If that was even a word for it. My eyes trailed up her back noticing she was wearing a loose open buttoned down shirt, with a dark green camisole. I could feel heat rising too my face. I took a sip of my tea, noticing the woman with the overpriced, well everything turn and glare at me. I raised my eyebrows in surprise at the sudden hostility.

“That’ll be forty two dollars, please.” Jenny’s voice broke me out of reverie. I saw the woman huff, and dig some money out of her over sized purse. I couldn't help but wonder what a woman who looks like that would be doing with all those books. She looked like she wanted to be anywhere but here. She pulled out a credit card. “Do you take Visa?” Jen nodded. Handing her the machine so she could enter her PIN. I could tell that she wanted to say something. I looked over at Jen’s face. It was completely calm, with a little smile on her face.

The woman handed the machine back, while Jen got her receipt. “I don’t know how you people are able to get jobs here with all those disgusting holes in you, and those tattoos.” She scrunched up her nose. I looked at Jenny, waiting for a reaction. But all she did was pass her the receipts, still that calm look on her face. She smiled wider. “Would you like any further assistance?” She asked politely. The woman was in obvious shock, at what I wasn't sure. She shook her head no, picking up all the books. She walked towards the front door, when Jen called out. “I hope you and your husband find a way to cure his ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION!” practically screaming the last two words. The woman turned around, her mouth hanging open. Turning back around, she practically ran out the door. Jen burst out into a fit of giggles, it was the most adorable sound. Turning towards me, she stopped short, as if she’d forgotten I was here. Her face becoming slightly pink. I held out her drink. “I got this for you.”

She took it from my hand, her finger touched my hand, sending a warm feeling throughout my body. “Thank you.” She grinned. Taking a long drink.

I smirked. “Thirsty much?” She glowered at me. “Hey, it’s been a long morning. She-,” pointing towards the door. “Wasn't much help. One forgets they need to actually drink something too stay hydrated.” Laughing at her. I asked. “So, what was that about anyway?” Snickering slightly. “How did you know about the husband and his ability to perform in bed.”

She smirked. “When we were walking down the aisles of books, she quickly grabbed one that caught her eye, and shoved it in the pile in my arms.” She set her drink down on the counter. “As I was ringing it in, I saw it. Medicinal Works for Erectile Dysfunction.” she paused to take another sip of her drink, she quickly chewed one of the tapioca balls. “I didn't want to seem rude at first so I didn't say anything.”

“But after she glared at you, and started on the whole piercing and tattoo thing. It would have been injustice not to embarrass her.” She narrowed her eyes, recalling the memory more than likely. I shrugged, it didn't bother me much, heard it all before. “So, what are you doing here?” She stared at me, her head slightly tilted to one side. I got sidetracked. “I, um.” stuttering slightly. “I missed you.” I gave her a grin. Her eyebrow raised. “Right.” Ouch, sarcasm. “Thanks for the bubble tea though.” Smiling she turned and helped another customer who came up with two books.

The customer thanked her and was on her way. I took a sip of tea, letting the warmth and spice sooth a soreness that was appearing in the back of my throat. She turned back towards me. “Would you like to stay over at my place for a few days? If you missed me so much?” She laughed. I didn't really have to think about it. “Sure.”

“Awesome. Meet me at my place after work?”

“Yeah, I’ll go pack up some clothes. Anything you want me to bring?”

“Maybe some Xbox games if you have any, I bought a Xbox 360 the other day. The games that came with it are pretty crappy.” She put finger on her chin, as if to be deep in thought. “And vodka, if you have any as well.” smirking at the last request.

“Sure, sure. I’ll talk to you later then.” I walked over and ensnared her in a hug. She gave me a squeeze, letting me know that she appreciates it. “I’ll be home in a half hour or so. You can let yourself in.” Handing me a key. I smiled softly at her. “I’ll see you then.”

Her smile was warm, loving even. I turned away, walking outside and towards my car. I felt a sudden chill, but ignored it. Why can’t I just outright say how I feel about her. I thought to myself. Feeling my heart tug in response. I turned around as I walked away from the bookstore, knowing she was probably watching me leave.

Maybe you're scared that she won’t stay around. A tiny voice in my head called out. Turning back around, I coughed slightly, my throat burning lightly. I took a sip of tea to soothe it more. The last thing I need is a cold. Noting it was September, it could be the temperature changes from going outside in the heat and into my air conditioned house. Reaching my car, I got in and listened as it rumbled to life. I’ll have to remember to take something for it. Pulling away and driving too Jen’s flat.

“So, how was your day?” I asked Jen as she walked in the door with some groceries. I had been doing some song writing on my laptop when she came in the door. I got up off the comfy leather couch and walked over to the kitchen area. Jen looked at me. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used too shopping in America.” she laughed. I shrugged. “Not much you can do there.” I started putting some food away while she talked.

“So, what do you think of the place?” gesturing to the flat. She was referring too the new, well everything. Since the last time I was here, it was all but empty except for a few old pieces of furniture and a bed. “It’s looking a lot better since I was last here.” I coughed lightly. She looked over at me concern written on her face. “You okay?”

I felt my throat constrict as my coughing worsened. I felt Jenny’s arm come around my shoulder and led me back over to the couch. “I’m...alright.” I gasped out between coughs. I felt her hand on my forehead. I leaned into her hand, feeling how cool it was. “Your burning up, Chris.” I heard her move away. I suddenly felt a little dizzy, I leaned back on the couch trying to gather my surroundings. Jen came back with some orange juice and some Tylenol. “Here.” I swallowed the pill, and drowned it with some orange juice.

I blew out a short breath. “Jesus, I really am getting sick.” I felt Jenny’s cool hand on my cheek. “Mmmm… Your hand feels nice.”

“Do you need a blanket or something?” I shivered in response. She got up again and went to her room, presumably grabbing a blanket. I closed my eyes. I felt something soft being wrapped around me, I peeked open my eyes to see her cocoon me with a black feather blanket. I grabbed the ends and pulled it towards me, realizing exactly how cold I was.

“I’m going to make some dinner now. You just chill here.” I nodded. She turned on the TV, handing me the remote. “How’s goulash sound?” I looked at her, smiling broadly. “Sounds awesome.”

Recalling the memory of when she first cooked it for me.

We were back at my place, it was her turn to cook supper. She set down the food in front of me.

I looked at the plate of macaroni and hamburger mess in front of me. I looked up at Jenny, her hand on hip, looking at me skeptically. I raised my eyebrow at her. “What’s this?” I asked. “Goulash.” grabbing my spoon, I took a good spoonful of it. It was delicious. I looked over a Jen. She was grinning from ear to ear, a light blush on her face. “Well. What do you think?”

“I don’t know.” I smirked. “It’s a… different.” Pretending to be indifferent.“Be honest with me, before I hit you with this saucy spoon… thing.” She waved the scoop around. Laughing I said. “It’s delicious.” taking another bite. A blend of spices and tomato assaulted my taste buds. “Mmmm. This is so good.” Quickly finishing my plate off. I held it towards her. “More please?” She looked over at me in surprise. But grabbed my plate and scooped up more goulash on my plate. Grabbing her plate she set down at the table, handing me my plate. We both dug in.

I heard an explosion on the TV, opening my eyes I saw Thor smash his hammer onto Captain Americas shield, creating a huge reaction, causing the forest too fall flat onto the earths surface. I smelled the familiar smell of goulash being fried on the stove. Also, noting that my nose was starting to plug up. Perfect. I heard an unfamiliar song playing from the kitchen. And I heard a slight humming sound coming from Jenny.

It sounded melancholy, sweet even. I stood up with the blanket over me, walking over to the kitchen.
I watched her sway slightly too the music, while humming the song, she seemed to know the song well; as she hummed in tune with the music. She turned and stopped, seeing me; the humming ceased. “What was that song?” I asked, giving a light cough. I could see her face turn blood red, at being caught humming. “It was.. uh, Bittersweet by Apocalyptica. One of my favorites of theirs.” “Hmm, I noticed, I heard you humming.” I felt a smile play on my lips.

“Sorry.” She rushed out. I shook my head. “No, I enjoyed it. You should do that more often.”

She clicked her tongue. “That’s what everyone says. Ever since that choir camp I went too, that one time.” She put a lot of emphasis on ‘One.’

“You went too choir camp?”

She looked at me through narrowed eyes. “Yes, I wanted too see what it was all about. Camp anyway. My music teacher at school was ecstatic that at least one of her students went there.” She turned away, taking the goulash off the heat of the stove. “Ready to eat?” I nodded.

It was late evening. We were just chilling out on the couch, while my cold got slowly worse. I was suddenly really grateful that I was here at her place. We watched movies most of the afternoon during and after dinner. I heard my phone ring. I looked and saw a text.

Ricky; Hey man, whats up?

I texted back.

Not much. Coming down with a damn cold. Currently under house arrest according to Jen.

I looked back up at the movie playing. We were watching Dark Shadows.

My phone beeped again.

Ricky; Ouh lala ;)

Shut up.

Ricky was the first to figure out that I was falling for Jen. Of course, he always had something to say whenever I mentioned her name.

Ricky; I kid man. You should tell her though. You never know she could like you back. I mean, what's the worse that could happen?

Just about anything. It could ruin our friendship, she could leave; sooner I might add. I thought to myself.

I don’t know. I hit send and looked over at her. She was pretty into the movie, didn't seem to notice I was texting. “Do you mind if I go for a shower?” I asked. She looked over at me. “I don’t see why you need to ask.” She laughed. “You are staying here for at least the weekend. What’s mine is yours type of deal.”

I grinned, grabbing my shower gel and shampoo out of my bag and headed for the shower. Turning the hot water on full blast, I let it run until the whole bathroom become consumed by steam. Getting in, I inhaled the first non stuffed up breath of the evening. Feeling better already, I let my thoughts wander back too the night I got so drunk that Jenny had too help me into bed. I flushed at the thought that I knew full well that I dragged her into bed with me. Her body pressed against mine. She smelled wonderful; of shea butter and vanilla. I remember a few very vivid dreams of where I had her squirming and mewling under me.

I felt a familiar rush run past my abdomen. Groaning slightly. Damn.

“Ready?” Jen was holding Vaporub, in her other hand was some of the cool minty gel just above my chest. I nodded. I shivered somewhat violently as the cool gel made contact with my skin. But soon after I felt my nose start to clear up, and my chest warmed up with the help of Jenny’s warm and soft hand. I took a deep breath. I stared at her, smiling softly. Her green eyes staring at my chest intently.

“Thank you.” I murmured. Her green eyes turned up and stared up at me. Her face became a lovely pink. “No problem.” She raised her hand away from my chest. “There, all done.” She got up and washed her hands of the extra gel. Sitting down back beside me, I leaned down and laid my head on her lap, pulling the blanket over me. She put her hand on my forehead to check my temperature, I sighed happily as the coolness of her hand drove away the overheated feeling in my face. Her fingers found there way to my head, were she gently played with my hair. I fell asleep with the feeling of her fingers coursing through my hair, pushing it out of my face.

My last thought was that I would really love to tangle my fingers in her dark brown hair, and kiss her softly.
