Chapter 43
-Alan’s POV-
“Mr. Ashby?” The voice on the other end of the phone said.
“Yes?” I answered.
“I’m sorry to inform you, but Brook Smith has been in an accident and it says that you’re her emergency contact. May I ask your status with Ms. Smith?” the voice of a male said.
“I’m her fiancé. What do you mean she’s been in an accident?” I was so confused, I felt my heart drop to my stomach, I was so afraid of what the guy was about to tell me.
“She was in a terrible car accident, I need you to come to the general hospital immediately. She’s in critical condition, Mr. Ashby.”
“I’ll be there soon” I said and dropped to my knees.
Phil, Tino, Amanda, Scarlett, and Aaron just looked at me.
“Alan what’s wrong?” Phil asked.
“Brook…she…she was in an accident…she’s…critical…I…I…have to go.” I choked out, tears were now forming in my eyes.
-Hours Eariler-
I was about to do the most courageous thing ever; well today it would seem courageous.
I was outside of Scarlett’s new apartment. Erin thankfully let me have her address.
I knocked and stayed in view of the peephole. I couldn’t get her hopes up that I was Austin.
The door open partially, with Scar’s face looking at me.
“What Alan?” she asked.
“Can I come in?”
“Why?”
“I don’t want to upset you. I miss you and I have some news to tell you about myself.” I said.
The door shut to undo the lock chain and opened all the way.
“Come in and have a seat.” She said.
“Thanks.” I said.
Her apartment was such a Scarlett apartment. The place looked like a million dollars. I could tell that Scarlett did this place for herself and no one else.
She cleared her throat, which caught my attention, apparently I had been studying the cool purple, grey, and white scheme she had going on for too long.
“It’s nice” I said.
She laughed, “Oh Ashby, you would.”
“Want to hear my news?” I asked and sat on her very puffy couch.
“Well duh, it’s kind of the only reason I let you in my apartment.”
“I proposed to Brook and she said yes.”
“WHAT!” Scarlett screamed and then threw a pillow at me. “When did you even buy a ring?”
“I didn’t” I said and laughed.
“Then what? Explain.” She said.
“I was high and courageous…” I started saying.
“You aren’t high now are you?”
“On love” I said and laughed.
“Get up Ashby. You get a hug and apology from me.” She said.
She hugged me rather tightly, and I held her back. This girl was going to be my best friend that was her place in my life.
“I’m sorry I ran yesterday…Alan, I’m not okay without him.” She said and started crying.
I had her sit with me as I let her cry into my shoulder. Austin really fucked up.
“I’m sorry I’m such a mess” she said as she pulled away and wiped the tears from her eyes.
“No don’t be, I would be upset to, I just wish we knew that he was okay.”
“Me too” she said and gave a half reassuring smile.
“Well I also wanted to invite you to a little celebration dinner that we put together tonight…” I said.
“Really? You want me, the emotional wreck there?” she said and laughed.
I laughed, “Yes, you’re my best friend.” I said.
“Well then I guess that gives me a reason.” she said.
-Scarlett’s POV-
Alan and I were considering us best friends. I can do this. I can go to his engagement dinner thing and see everyone else.
The rest of the guys minus Austin…damn it…here I go again.
No Scarlett you cannot do this to yourself. You’re going to put this nice dress on and go for Alan you need to do this.
Having to self motivate myself is pathetic but I don’t care.
I slipped my dark purple dress over my head, put my heels on, grabbed my purse, and off I went.
Arriving to Alan’s apartment, I tried to contain myself; I was so full of nerves.
I think that part of me wanted Austin to hear word of this and be here, but we all know that wouldn’t happen.
I knocked twice on Alan’s door and it opened to reveal Aaron.
I completely forgot that they all think Austin and I ran away together. I swear if Alan didn’t tell them, I will murder him.
“Scar!” he said and enveloped me into a huge hug.
“Hi…um air…is needed…” I said.
“Sorry it’s so nice to see you!” he said as he let me go.
“You too” I said as we walked into Alan’s small dining room.
Phil saw me first and stopped talking to come straight to me and engulfed me in a hug. Tino followed and soon enough it was a huge group hug. These guys were like my family.
“Well geez guys thanks for including me in this hug!” Alan announced.
Everyone laughed and pulled away.
“Anouk and Jen are too busy with work to join us.” Amanda said as she disapprovingly looked at her phone.
“Brook said that the traffic is bad so that she’ll be late to her own party.” Alan said and laughed.
Everyone was talking when Alan got a phone call.
“I’m her fiancé. What do you mean she’s been in an accident?” I heard Alan say, Phil and I both looked at each other, unsure of what we just heard.
Then Alan suddenly dropped to his knees and we all stared.
“Alan what’s wrong?” Phil asked.
“Brook…she…she was in an accident…she’s…critical…I…I…have to go.” Alan barely said as tears formed in his eyes.
No one knew what to say, everyone was shocked.
“Phil and I will come with you, okay?” I said.
“I’ll come too” Tino said.
“We will put everything away here and be there soon.” Aaron said.
I walked over to Alan who was completely frozen. Tino and Phil tried to pull him up and he just wouldn’t move.
“Alan, come on you have to go for her. You have to be there okay?” I said and extended my hand to his.
He grabbed it and Phil helped him up.
This couldn’t be happening to Alan.
