You don't need to hide, my friend, for I'm just like you

Tom's P.O.V

At some point, I lost sight of Oliver and Austin but I was so engrossed in what I was doing that I hardly noticed. I rapidly collected myself off of the ground and moved on, victim to victim; trying desperately to prove my worth to the innocent people. I answered questions, vaguely but still answered them. I even clued people in on what exactly happened, and the reasons behind our powers and hatred towards the radical group of mock government officials. Shockingly, most agreed with us; some offering to join the fight but I quickly declined their offers and told them it was safer for us to handle it. Finally, we had shed some light for these people; we had given them a new outlook, we had given them hope.

“So, what can we do to help? You all are risking your lives for us, I think I speak for everyone when I say that I want to do something to help.” A country man spoke up as he took a seat on the ground dead in the hovering piece of earth, I smiled and shook my head.

“Nonsense, we want to do this; we want to help. You don’t owe us anything but if you want to help, you can support us.” I said grimly, we needed all the help we could get nowadays; we needed motivation, will to live again. I didn’t expect nor want these people to risk their lives for us, I just wanted them to have the chance of happiness that we had stripped from us. If Matt were here, would I feel different? Would I long to go on and change this world more than just leave an impression? Perhaps, but perhaps not. I missed him terribly, and I would be lying if I said my heart didn’t die when he did. I had found love and I had lost it, I had lost everything due to the actions of others and I wouldn’t stop until the world realized it. Except, now they did.

“So why do you fight for us? Why not kill all of us off and have the world to yourself?” An older woman asked as I looked her sons wounds over, I felt the crowds eyes on me as I smiled up at her.

“Well, that’s one solution, yes, but we don’t want control…we just want things to be like they used too. We want you all to have a chance to be happy; we want you all to live on.” I answered honestly, but I couldn’t help but frown as the woman’s smile faltered.

“But you keep saying you want us to live on…what of you three? What happens to you?” she asked tenderly as I fixed the scratch on her young child’s arm, the familiar sting echoed throughout my own. Through gritted teeth I gave her my most honest reply.

“Ma’am, that’s because we don’t expect to walk away from here today. I think you can understand that.” She grimaced but didn’t pry any longer, she only thanked me for my assistance.

“Who will watch over us then…when you all are gone?” a teenaged boy asked in a hushed voice, and it was moments like these where I had to remind myself that I too, was only a teenager.

“You all will have to figure that bit out, but I ask one thing of you all…” I spoke up over the crowd and successfully earned quiet, save for the shrill screams in agony from the soldiers who surrounded us. “Please, don’t forget about us…don’t forget about what we have done. I don’t mean that in an arrogant way…I just want people to know that we always meant no harm.” The group nodded their heads in understanding; and I was relieved at that.

“Tom!” my brother’s voice echoed throughout the area and I was quickly scanning the area, trying to determine where it was coming from. Moments later, the earth shook beneath my feet and the ground branched out into one particular direction, the severed piece of ground being reunited with the whole; Austin stood at the other end of it, quickly waving me over. Oli came up beside him as I ran down the small path to their sides; they were both drenched in blood, the stench made my stomach churn.

“Trucks just pulled up, lots of them. I don’t know how much longer we can keep them at bay…” Austin panted; Oli tiredly nodded his head in agreement.

“So what are we going to do?” I whispered, people were swarming around us now, more than I had ever seen before; guns aimed at us, threats were called out; but my eyes stayed locked onto those of my brothers and Austin's.

“Go down with a fight, I guess.” Oli roared as he charged back at the new onslaught of men, Austin shrugged before submerging himself back into the gore as well. I chased after them, I was worthless in combat; but luckily I wasn’t needed. Staying behind them provided shelter from the bullets and dangers, though I felt bad about making them over exert themselves. The crowd grew thicker, and I could hear Austin and Oli pant as we got a few lines deep into the mass, we couldn’t keep this up. There were too many of them, and too few of us, but for some reason, I was not scared of this. A particularly bright light blocked my vision as I quickly felt my body hit the ground, someone fell to my left and the other above me, I knew it was Austin and Oli. I pried my eyes open painfully, everything hurt, everything was sore, and I couldn’t hear a damn thing if I had tried. I felt something snake around my torso as my eyes fluttered closed, the same bright light from earlier ensnared my thoughts. From the blinding rays I saw a hand emerge, then an arm, piece by piece the person morphed in front of me; I couldn’t hold back the cry that crawled up my throat.

“Oh Tom, don’t cry…there’s nothing to be afraid of anymore.” Matt wrapped his arms around me tightly as I clutched onto him for dear life, breathing in the essence that was him.

“I missed you so much,” I wailed as I shakily pressed a kiss to his cheek, he beamed as he rocked me back and forth, whispering how much he loved me over and over again.

“I didn’t mean to leave you like that Tommy, It all happened so fast…but I’ll tell you what. We can stay like this forever now, does that sound alright to you?” he asked as he picked me up into his strong arms, a brilliant smile on his face. I could only nod as I stared up at the man I loved, “c’mon then. Everyone’s waiting.”

Oli's P.O.V

“Fuck…” I grumbled, punching the ground as I tried to pick myself off of the ground, but I found that I had zero fight left in me. My vision was black, and I exerted as much energy as I could to touch my eyes, but they did not feel as if they normally did. No, they were gritty, and I instantly recognized the substance on my skin as glass.

“Ugh, my eyes!” Austin screamed from somewhere around me, without thinking I reached out for him, his screams of agony were beginning to turn to whimpers and I could hear the pain he was always so good at hiding seep into his voice.

“Austin…” I cried out, something clasped over my arm and dragged me next to someone else’s frame, from the sound of the cries it was the man I had been ‘looking’ for.

“Oli…I'm sorry…I love you…” he whimpered as he clasped his arm around me, I shook my head tiredly, I only wanted to fall asleep now; from the sound of it Austin only wanted the same.

“I know, me too…I love you too.” I whispered as I felt around blindly, calling out my brothers name. I felt nauseous when I heard no call back from him,

“Don’t worry, I have him Oli…just go to sleep baby, we will see you soon, okay?” I knew falling asleep meant dying, I knew drifting off meant saying goodbye to the world forever…but Tom had already accepted that fact. He was probably waiting for me now, and Austin was coming with me…so I wasn’t scared or upset.

“Okay…Austin? Do you think we made a difference?” I choked out as liquid rose into my throat, thick blood spewed from my lips as the pain began to fade away, I heard Austin mumble, “Don’t worry baby, I’ll be with you the whole time…you don’t have to fight anymore…but between me and you…I think we did…I think we did…I love you…”

That was enough closure for me.

That was all I needed, that was all I ever did.

Alan choked as he spotted the three men on the ground. Police tape had been set up around them, but he ducked under it; much to the dismay of the guards, but he had to see this himself. It was grotesque, something he never wanted to see in his life, but sure enough; he was seeing it now. The three men at his feet were long since gone, their injuries so severe that It made Alan gag; but what made it worse was the fact that he had at once cared deeply for these people. He had at one time wanted to protect them and had tried to warn them of the dangers, but they had not listened. They hadn’t obeyed his commands to leave, and this was the price they had paid.

His former best friends body was slightly contorted, but a smile still lasted on his face even in death; he was holding Oliver closely to his chest, and he cradled Tom under his arm. The youngest Sykes brothers were open wide like a deer caught in the headlights while Austin's and Oli's were maimed past recognition. Alan frowned as he bent down and slowly closed the eyes of the teenager out of respect, soon after he let tears fall onto their still frames.

He never wanted this to happen to them and to think that it had…no. He wiped the frown off of his face, as he heard shouts coming from the patrons on the street. Screams of rebellion and betrayal, pride swelled up in his gut and he cast a sad smile down at his former friends.

“You did it guys…you did it…I just wish you were here to see it.”

With that Alan clicked his heels together as he pivoted around and stalked off into the direction of the crowd, somewhere along the way, leaving his military uniform behind him.
