You (Of All People)

Million Dollar Houses

Marie sat cross-legged on her cot, the light above her flickering whenever the bus would hit a bump in the road. Jetta's mom had made everyone's beds shortly before the girls took off, and she now sat on top of her folded sheets. Pieces of tape hang from her fingers as she put up mini-posters; Dean from Supernatural, The Walking Dead crew, and The Fault in Our Stars cover. Around those, she taped pictures of people from back home; her mother, her father, her old softball coach, Jetta's mom, Jetta's older brother, Abby's mom and Annabelle's grandmother, the entire band when they were still in highschool, and her and Annabelle hugging on stage at their first gig.
"Marie," she heard a voice call.
The vocalist drew back the blue curtain and peeked out finding Abby in a pair of rainbow pajama pants.
"We're going to watch the movie now," the bright-haired girl said, gesturing towards the front of the cabin. Marie nodded, putting the remaining photographs back in the cardboard box atop her pillow.
The movie was a tradition since a TV was installed in their old bus. On the first night of every tour, the band and crew would park themselves in front of the television and watch a Disney movie. The Nightmare Before Christmas made an appearance quite a few times, but tonight it was Brave. It was sort of a homecoming party. The road was more of a home than any of them really had, in the end.
Marie lived with Jetta in an apartment on the edge of town. It was a basement item, ten hundred a month (though because of Jetta's connections to the owner of the building, they hardly ever had to pay that much.) They had two bedrooms, and they kept things pretty fair; Marie's room was closer to the bathroom, but Jetta had a walk-in closet. The apartment was pretty nice despite the occasional flood, but that was mostly in Jetta's room (she now kept most of her stuff away from the far wall, especially during the warmer seasons.) Jetta's mom and brother lived in the same building, but two floors up. Marie's mother and Norah lived on the other side of town, where everyone had houses. Marie enjoyed the freedom.
Abby lived in what was supposed to be her mother's garage, but was renovated during her senior year of high school to include half of the basement. This was where the band had most of their practices.
Cleo shared a condo with her boyfriend. It was a good place. It had a pond and a forest and -more important than anything- it had Thom.
Annabelle was the only one who lived alone. She had a place in a co-op right smack-dab in the center of town. It wasn't the ideal living situation but it had the solitude she wanted.
But none of them felt as at-home in those places as they did on that ugly brown and orange bus.
